Vitali Klitschko retains WBC title in just 3 minutes

By Rahil Sheikh: WBC king Vitali Klitschko earned a first round stoppage victory over formerly unbeaten Oldanier Solis, in what turned out to be a disappointing Saturday night for the 19,000 packed crowd in Cologne, Germany.

Solis (17-1, 12 KO’s) a 2008 Olympic gold medalist for Cuba, was wobbled at 2 minutes 50 seconds of the first round by what appeared to be a glancing straight right to the temple – but then stumbled down to the canvas and appeared to hurt his right knee.

As referee Jose Guadalupe Garcia began his count, Solis struggled to make it to his feet, using the ropes to hold himself up he managed to make it up in time for the 8 count but seemed in huge discomfort with his right knee.

Subsequently, referee Garcia deemed Solis unable to continue and stopped the fight, resulting in Vitali Klitschko being awarded the knockout victory improving to a record of 42-2, 39 KO’s.

Not only did this prompt an echo of jeers from the 19,000 boxing fans inside the Lanxess-Arena, but Vitali Klitschko himself showed his frustration buy angrily confronting Solis – in what Klitschko believed to be a premature end to the fight.

When asked by Ian Darke of Sky Sports whether or not he thought Solis had given up, Klitsckho said: “No idea. It will be very interesting to listen to what the doctors say after the medical exam. He took a really hard punch but after that he won’t fight. I don’t know.”

He added: “It was a hard punch from me. I have a nickname, Ironfist. I’m sorry for everybody who wanted to see a long fight but I hit him pretty hard with my right hand – and it was enough.”

Initially the fight was looking promising with Solis imposing his speed landing quick combinations and catching Vitali with clean shots early in round 1.

Vitali showed ring generalship and had established his jab for mostly judging his range but not landing anything of note as Solis demonstrated good footwork around the ring.

However it was all over when Vitali landed a short straight right hand late in the first round that appeared to glance Solis on the temple who then injured his right knee as he fell to the canvas.

Vitali concluded the night by saying: “I have a feeling nobody in the world can beat me.”

Not much of a fight but glad I caught the replay on epix.

If Vitali can do that to Solis, just think what he will do to Haye who is not as quick as Solis.

haye cannot beat these guys he is no faster than Solis and is as small as a big cruiserwieght.I just cannot imagine he had a severe injury prior jumping up and down and moveing well, but it sure seems like that may be a reacurring injury for sure. What a dirty bummer for the fans.Never go into a twelve rounder with a potential game stopper.

any chance these excuses for heavyweights these days could bother to get fit b4 a fight…they do earn a few quid for it…is it too much to ask,the viewers gettin some value for money…heavyweight division is becoming a joke

i saw fight live and slow motion replays and i think solis hurt his knee as he ducked and rolled to the right then upon hurting his knee he appeared to look up at the referee which is when vitali hit him. solis forgot the golden rule… defend yourself at all times. i would say it was injury rather than a punch that stopped the fight. vitali still to be tested since his return. haye will be to quick for him tho

lennox and Haye defye Klitschcos greatness as a very hard nosed and effective fighter. The first commenter was correct in his assesment of Lennox who i loved to watch fight, was so incorrect in giveing vitali his due prior to the match.lennox was lucky to get a quick cut stoppage in his fight with vitali because he was totaly spent and would have been stopped himself,in the next round more than likely.haye will have to runa nd shoot ,but will get overcome by Vitalis assault should they ever fight.mark my words.

This fight was such a let down. I know the haters will say that Solis was “WINNING” but lets be honest here, first rounds are more a less a feeling out round. I am positive by round 3 Solis would have been in range of the power jabs and by rounds 7 or 8 the outcome would be not in doubt. Thoughs that say he was hurt going in, that is non sense. He was bouncing around just find right before he got hit on the temple. I am sure he was hurt, I just think the leg thing happend as he was going down. I am looking for VK to be fighting Haye as I truly believe WK will still be less than 100 %.

Vitali clearly was the KO winner. Shame on EPIX commentator Lennox Lewis who took pot shots at Klitschko and refused to acknowledge that he was “Dr. Ironfist”. I would hope that EPIX in the future will get commentators that are impartial and do not have an axe to grind as Lennox clearly does.
