Tony Weeks to referee Maidana-Morales
By Jason Kim: The April 9th fight between Erik Morales (51-6, 35 KO’s) and Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 Ko’s) will have referee Tony Weeks working the fight. Usually fighters aren’t all that concerned about who the referee will be for the fight.
Maidana wasn’t happy with all the clinching that Khan was getting away with in the fight. Khan was doing more than clinching. He was doing a lot of grabbing of Maidana’s right arm and clamping down on it to keep him from nailing him while in close.
Maidana did what all smart fighters do when an opponent grabs their arms, he used his free arm to tag Khan over and over again to get him to let go. However, Cortez separated Khan and Maidana on at least one occasion while Maidana was tagging Khan with shots with his free arm.
It seemed like Cortez should have either warned Khan about the holding or let Maidana continue to pound Khan with his free arm. Maidana lost a point in the fight for throwing an elbow in response to Khan draping his arms around him and holding on to try and keep Maidana from punching. The elbow that Maidana threw never hit Khan. Instead it hit Cortez, who promptly took a point away from Maidana even though he never hit Khan with the elbow.
Maidana has a less mobile opponent in the ring with him with Morales and this should be a lot more interesting fight compared to the Khan-Maidana. Morales will be looking to mix it up with Maidana and he won’t have to chase Morales down to land his shots like he did with Khan.

Great way to sell the fight. Controversey.
@tbj. You are a fool, if it were you in there would you stand there and trade with an opponent you know who would floor you OR would u outbox him and take the victory. Idiots like you amaze me!
@tbj:
So are you saying that Sugar Ray Leonard was a douche for running from Hagler? I disagree. Leonard boxed from the outside, throwing jabs to blind Hagler while jumping in with his damaging hooks. It may sound unmanly to do it but it would be rather stupid to face your opponent toe-to-toe if you know he can knock you out quicker than you can take him out. One of the greatest shows was Ali absobing the mighty Foreman’s punches for more than ahandful of rounds then throwing a flurry back to knock him out – look at the outcome on the great Muhammad. It was brave and amazing but look at the consequence. Enough said.
@tbj, So a ‘REAL’ champion would stand there and get knocked out, lose the fight and take some serious damage when they are hurt, rather than outbox his opponent while moving to secure the win for the last 3 rounds as he is already winning the fight?? You’re and idiot…
I think if it wasn’t for Cortez, Maidana would’ve won and TKO’d or KO’d Khan!!!!! I kept yelling at the TV BC it seemed like Cortez was getting paid off or playing favorites. It was one of the poorest referring jobs I’ve seen. Khan is not a true champ. A true champion doesn’t run like Khan did the last few rounds!
anything is better than cortez even tony weeks
Tony weeks is garbage. Cortez a legend like mill lanes
Joe Cortez is the biggest joke of a ref ever. He fixed the Hatton-Mayweather fight as well. He is complete garbage and should not be a ref.
Tony weeks suks
Golden boy has Joe Cortez in there pocket !
Hey man, I don’t think you could get much more of an ‘interesting’ fight than that bewteen Khan and Maidana. It had everything and was action packed and exciting from the 1st round to the last. Khan built up a big points lead with his clever boxing and then Maidana coming back to take the later rounds with Khan almost out on his feet. If every fight had the same thrills then boxing would be better off for it.
If Maidana v Morales can match or better the Khan fight then I would be surprised.
