Sergio Martinez says Mayweather is the best fighter in the world, and wants to fight him

By Dave Lahr: Well, I hate to break this to Manny Pacquiao’s fans but WBC Emeritus middleweight champion Sergio Martinez thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the best fighter in boxing right now, not Pacquiao. I got to say I totally agree with Martinez 100%. Mayweather is on another planet in terms of ability to compared to Pacquiao. It’s too bad Martinez can’t get a fight against Manny, because it would be great to see what Martinez’s punches can do with the 5’6″ Pacquiao.
In a Martinez interview at eastsideboxing.com, Martinez said “Floyd Mayweather Jr. is probably the best fighter in the world right now and the one that I admire most, personally. It would be an honor for me to fight him.”
I wonder why Martinez didn’t mention Pacquiao as being the best fighter in the world? Is it because his technique isn’t as solid as Mayweather’s or is it the guys that Pacquiao has been put in with that causes Martinez to ignore Pacquiao when picking out the fighter he most admires? For me it’s both. I see Mayweather as a much better fighter in ever facet of his game compared to Pacquiao, and I also see Mayweather having faced overall better fighters than Pacquiao. Heck, Pacquiao went life and death with Juan Manuel Marquez, a fighter that Mayweather totally dominated. What does that tell you?

Has anyone stopped and wondered … maybe Martinez knows he’s recognized as a fighter that can negotiate / potentially pull-off a Mayweather upset; and get paid MILLIOOOOOOONNNNNS in the process.
FYI … Martinez DID give Manny credit! Martinez said Manny could fill an entire stadium without it even being a title fight; and goes on to express how he hopes to be on the same level, by this year (look it up). It’s always about the money, so author, respectfully … stop talking out of your poop pipe.

I think that martinez, wants to fight money and pac because he’s in his prime, he doesnt have much time before he passes his glory years, he wants to be p4p really bad and wanst to take it away from te p4p king that being money or pac, if ward or bute would be the p4pd’s im sure martinez would go up there and beat them, manny fought a bigger longer armed fighter than himself and margarito, why not give martinez a chance?? does he fear martinez??
Martinez legacy? What legacy you’re talking about? Martinez looking for a smaller fighter with Pacquiao or even Floyd for a fight? If you’re talking about Martinez legacy, he need a balls to fight a higher weight rather asking for a welterweight fighter. He’s middleweight and weight 170 lbs on his last fight. That’s almost a light heavyweight. If he got a balls he need to fight Bute or any of the top super middleweight fighter.
Dzinziruk never fought at middleweight before when he fought Martinez. Dzinziruk was a LIGHT middleweight and move up north to face Martinez. I am not going to fight Martinez nor Pacman. I got traumatized after seeing how Pacman brutally murdered Hatton and how Martinez KOed P. Williams. The only guy I would fight right now is the small Juan Manuel Marquez.. only this time I’d be 5 lbs heavier than the agreed fight night weight limit.

Mayweather has in fact avoided PWill and Martinez. Mayweather in fact agreed to everything Pac requested even when Pac’s demands where under the commissions rules like the $10 MILLION weight penalty. Mayweather’s self proclaimed greatness will only be true greatness if he beats Pacquiao and then Martinez. He has the size to go against Martinez while Pacquiao does not. Martinez is 2 sizes higher than Pacquiao but only one size higher than Mayweather. Martinez vs Mayweather is doable. Mayweather will never fight Martinez because the latter is not only good but has the size edge, albeit small. Heck, Mayweather does not even want to fight Pacquiao, a smaller guy.

Pacman’s last 2 fights have been a shame, Clottey and Margarito now Shane… After Shane smashed Margariot and everybody was riding Shane’s balls they said he was the baddest out there, they were pressuring Floyd to fight Shane. Martinez is the true Pound for Pound #1. Fighter/K.O. of the year 2010 and predict the 2011 fighter of the year. Mayweather and Pac would not fight him at 154 lbs(they have a disadvantage at this weight), so the options are to rematch Cintron, fight Kirkland, move up, and fight a Bute or Ward. Ward would be ok, but he likes to run. Bute would be the most exciting opponent of the mentioned fighters.

Why is all the talk about Sergio facing 147 and 154 fighters. He has said that Pirog has not earned the right to fight him. He made some remark about Sturm and avoided the issue about going up to 168.
Look I like the guy and feel he is a breath of fresh air but before we coronate him like we did Pavlik and Taylor let me see a body of work first. And please, I repeat, no more talk about facing smaller men from 147 or 154. Those guys have reached their max. Hopkins stayed at 160 for years and beat guys who came up. Finally he went up and beat a drained Tarver but he was great doing it anyway. Not all guys can go up but if Sergio does not want to clean out 160 or go to 168 that is his fault not Pac or Floyd. I already am sick hearing he wants to be #1. It shows how dumb P4P really is.
If Klit Bros were #1 nobody would be calling them out. If Sergio cleans out 160 in a decisive manner, he will be rated P4P #1 deservedly. Pac got #1 becuz he risked facing larger guys but he went too far vs Margo and now he says he is settled at welter. he will not make the dumb move like Jones or Williams and float bewteen divisions as eventually the weight loss will kill you.
So what if he says Floyd is the best? Floyd is the most talented boxer but it takes more than talent or potential. I have seen people like Jones, Holmes and Holyfield say Manny is the best but that means nothing either. Let them fight and we will see who is better.

floyd said besides manny the only other person he would fight is martinez . sees a lot of money in that fight. martinez just needs to stay hot. knocking everyone out and keep building up excitment over him. if legal problems can be handled maybe we can have a big fight in november.

As for Manny fighting Martinez. Everybody with half a brain knows that will never happen, Manny’s camp will never want a part in that as Martinez would most likely beat Manny and they all know it. Manny never fights anyone he doesn’t have some sort of distinct advantage over. I just want to see him in a 50/50 fight where everything is equal not some fight at a crazy catch weight where his opponent has to kill himself to make weight (Oscar) or where his opponent has been hyped up to make them seem better than they are (Hatton) or someone who is totally over the hill who he claims isn’t (Mosley).

I think the story should be about why we won’t see Martinez vs Mayweather! I recall Mayweather stating he would fight the winner of Martinez vs Williams II and then disappearing after the KO by Martinez. This is simply Martinez’ way of calling Mayweather out. Either way this is probably an unwinnable fight for Mayweather or Pacquiao. Martinez is a bigger fighter, is fast, and hits hard. It would be too difficult for Manny or Mayweather to fight in a higher weight class than 147lbs and Martinez is too big to go down to 147lbs. Martinez should rematch his loss to Margarito or fight PW for a trilogy.

Try as you may, but not everyone believes the hype behind Manny Pacquiao. Your logic that Manny Pacquiao fought Cotta at a catch-weight becuase he was testing the waters is nonsense. I can understand if testing the waters meant a non-title fight, but since a title was on the line, it should have been at the required weight limit. Why does Manny always get to make the rules. It’s those type of tactics that leaves doubt in the minds of many concerning Manny Pacquiao legacy. He along with Arum have manipulated fights that are tailor made for him to win. The last fight that anyone thought that Manny even had a chance of losing was against De La Hoya. All the others after that, he was expected to win. So it’s no great accomplishment to beat someone that everyone expects you to beat. I give Manny credit for beating guys that are bigger than him, but it’s not the first time it’s been done. Holyfield beat a bigger Forman, Leonard won at light heavyweight, Spinks beat Ali, and so on. Manny’s accomplishments lately have been against the likes of Cotto, Clotty, Margarita, who are just fighters that he should have beat.

I wouldn’t have a problem with PAC fighting Martinez at 154 to be honest but it would be a mismatch I think welter is PAC mans limit he strugles to put any more weight on than that and be in top fighting shape I’m sure the little man would put up a good fight but I think he would end up cleaned out. Don’t try to be so philosophical about Sergio’s statements, they are exactly what they are. I am sure Martinez understands that Packman wants no piece of him.
