Saul Alvarez to fight Ryan Rhodes next

By William Mackay: There is talk that newly crowned World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez will be facing top contender Ryan Rhodes next rather than somebody known like Alfredo Angulo, Paul Williams or Kermit Cintron, according to fight news.

If Alvarez is looking to take on someone he can beat, then Rhodes is the way to go. Rhodes has been fighting 2nd tier opponents much of his career and this is a bad fighter for Rhodes all of a sudden to be stepping it up against.

Rhodes would be like fighting Matthew Hatton again, except that instead of sticking around for 12 rounds and sopping up punishment all night long, Rhodes will get whipped out fast. It’s a nice safe fight for Alvarez compared to the risk involved with fighting Cintron, Vanes Martirosyan or Williams.

If Alvarez just wants to hold on to his paper title for as long as he milk it, then Rhodes should be his next fight. Alvarez can then figure out who is another easy mark after the Rhodes fight. I would steer clear of Williams, Martirosyan and Alfredo Angulo, though. Cintron might be the best option for Alvarez after the Rhodes slaughter.

As far as entertaining action goes, I hate the Alvarez-Rhodes fight because it’s going to be such a huge mismatch. We’re talking about a British fighter with not a lot of power and a lot of mileage on him from facing 2nd tier guys. That’s not a good recipe for an interesting fight. I’d rather be entertained than watching one poor guy get brutalized by a bigger, stronger fighter like Alvarez.

Unless old father time has caught up with Rhodes since his tear up against Jamie Moore this is a proper fight that anyone with a sembalance of boxing knowledge will be looking forward too.

I’m with Stuarty_Glasgow – keep squeezing the hedgehog ya tool!

  • David Wright says:

Why don’t you ask Gary Woolcombe if Ryan has punching power?

beside this writer being an idiot, I think this is a great opportunity for Ryan and can’t wait to see him bring another World Title belt back to Britain!

  • don@london says:

After the European title there is only one thing to better that and that’s a world title. Rhodes has earned his shot!

  • Medina says:

    british boxers are garbage

If you follow boxing and don’t know who Ryan Rhodes is then you’re a Wrestler

I actually like this fight. This is a STEP UP for Alvarez. This article states that this fight is a mismatch…Just because one fighter is favored to win the fight does not make it a mismatch.

Alvarez and Rhodes both like to throw punches. This will be a hell of a fight. As long as this fight isn’t at a catch-weight it’s alright with me.

EL PERRO NEEDS TO COME BACK!!! he’s the true BEST 154 MEXICAN out their.

Very interesting fight, this writer is garbage though, Rhodes would give Alverez a solid, tough fight. Close to call.

be a gud match,i tink rhodes wil b too slick unless he suddenly “got old” since his last fight

  • Risky says:

Mate you are a clown who has probably never seen Ryan Rhodes fight. He is in the peak of his career, undefeated in 11 with a lot of experience plus being ranked 3 (i think) by the WBC so he is more than deserved his shot. Was unlucky not to get the shot when Hatton did. Look for Rhodes to try and box him usually his slick transition between orthodox and southpaw….

    @ M11

I’m a Scot & a big fan of Rhodes. I have travelled down south to watch him on a number of occasions. Most people i know up here support all Brit boxers. Mackays a fat waste of space & not welcome in Scotland!

  • Bernard says:

William Mackay, dude you suck, i had seen Rhodes fight before, and he is good, he hasnt lost in the last 5 years, you think all the boxing world is pacquiao and martinez, there are hundreds of good boxers out there, is not like they are putting him agianst pacquiao tomorrow because obviouly he will get knock the f**k out, i dont know if you get my point.. cheers

  • dukeboxer says:

Saul the Overrated Candelo Alvarez another hype up overrated boxer Ryan Rhodes he fought 50 fights already and who did he ever beat good alvarez just like Pacquiao get hand pick or old boxers that already have social security coming to win and some how they call greastest boxers please be forreals

  • M11 says:

hahaha – another pointless anti english article from that no doubt bitter wee scot. Anyone south of the border knows Rhodes has an excellent chance of winning this one. Zero hope Alvarez can get a single sparring partner like Rhodes. Alvarez will get knocked out – he’s a strong lad but then so was Jamie Moore and Rhodes stopped him. Dream on Mackay – yet again you’re going to look like a t1t after the fight.
