Ramos Jr. defeats Hernandez

By Jim Dower: Unbeaten light welterweight prospect Luis Ramos Jr. (18-0, 8 KO’s) defeated 24-year-old Jose Hernandez (10-5-1, 4 KO’s) by an eight round majority decision on Friday night at the Orange County Fairgrounds, in Costa Mesa, California. The final judges’ scores were 79-73, 77-75 and 76-76.

Ramos fought well but Hernandez showed a lot of heart despite being over-matched in this one, fighting Ramos tooth and nail and firing back all night long with hooks and right hands. Hernandez was wise enough to realize that he couldn’t back up against Ramos and do well. Instead he went straight at Ramos, putting the pressure on the undefeated fighter and making him fight a lot harder than he probably was expecting to.

The southpaw Ramos needs to work on his power if he wants to get to the next level because he doesn’t appear to hit hard enough to make it to the next level against the top rung fighters in the division. The good thing is that Ramos is only 22-years-old and will likely get stronger as he gets older.
