Perez stops Escalante in 1st round

By Jim Dower: The once promising featherweight contender Antonio Escalante (24-4, 15 KO’s) suffered his second consecutive early knockout loss on Friday night losing by a 1st round knockout to Alejandro Perez (15-2-1, 10 KO’s) at the Sports Center, in Fairfield, California. Escalante, 27, was doing alright in the opening round until he ran into a big right hand from Perez that flattened him. There was no getting up from the knockdown, and the fight was stopped at 2:57 of the 1st. Escalante was knocked out by the hard hitting Daniel Ponce De Leon in the 3rd round last year in September. Escalante may have needed more time to recover from that KO before taking on a hard puncher like Perez.
