Pavlik faces Lopez on May 7th
By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-2, 32 KO’s) will be making a comeback on May 7th in a super middleweight bout against Alfonso Lopez (21-0, 16 KO’s) in a fight that will be taking place on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley bout at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Pavlik could find himself getting beaten as soundly as he was in his loss to Bernard Hopkins in 2008 or his defeat at the hands of Sergio Martinez in his last fight in April 2010. However, Pavlik has one thing going for him that many others don’t – He fights for Bob Arum of Top Rank.
Arum is likely going to carefully match Pavlik against guys that he can beat and keep him away from the likes of Ward, Dirrell, Mikkel Kessler or Froch. Instead of Pavlik fighting those guys, we’ll very likely see him soon go after the weakest of the current super middleweight champions Robert Stieglitz, the WBO champion.
Pavlik can beat that guy, but then again so can a lot of other fighters in the super middleweight division. Arum will probably match Pavlik against Stieglitz and then Pavlik will end up as the new WBO paper champion. And like Stieglitz, we’ll see Pavlik facing guys like Enrique Ornelas, Eduard Gutknecht and Dimitri Sartison instead of guys that would likely whip Pavlik.
Look for Pavlik to be managed the same way that WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, who is being put in with guys like Yuri Foreman and Ricardo Mayorga rather than dangerous fighters such as Alfredo Angulo and Kermit Cintron.

he will win, then beat bute, then beat the paper champs trust me! then ull have a showdown between him and Froch
Good luck to Pavlik, I wish him nothing but the best. However, if he doesn’t regain some of his old grit and determination then he’ll never rise to the top again. He also needs different training if you ask me.
If he doesn’t, I believe Lowe’s limitations as a trainer will continue to reflect on Pavlik’s performances against top tier opponents. I hope that won’t be the case because I’d love to see Pavlik rise again. I still believe he has the capability of doing so.
Honestly think Lowe’s teaching was good enough to get Pavlik to the status he achieved but isn’t good enough to sustain that level. You have to evolve as a fighter if you want to remain on top.
As much as I like Pavlik’s fire power and heart, I haven’t seen any indication of that in his last few performances. Perhaps his drinking had something to do with it, who knows, but he still needs to improve on his all around boxing ability.
If Kelly can Regain the amount of heart he had in the first Taylor fight, he will be Unbeatable……….
geez, here we go again… I guess ya’ll like sissy fighters who dance around the whole fight. Pavlik Wants to bang, and he has a Punchers chance to knock anyone out.. I think Froch is taking PAVLIK lightly and would be in for a Rude 1-2 lights outs…
Pavlic may be limmited but he is very durable and hits hard.If he is truly hungry and has put his party ways aside he will do way better than many of you are giving him credit for.For one he has a big chance of beating Froch and will knock Abe out cold!
Kelly pavlik will be back hes top draw fighter.
I SHOULDNT HAVE TO ASK BUT WHATS KOnan ON???????? COULD KELLY EVER CATCH DIRRELL WHO COULD MOVE IN AND OUT EVER BIT AS FAST AS SERGIO? COULD KELLY TAKE FROCHS SHOTS WHICH CAN PUT AWAY A DONKEY? WARD FOUND A TRAINER WHO CAN FIND 15 WAYS FOR HIS FIGHTER TO BEAT YOU . CAN KELLY ????
hopkins and martinez are hall of fame type fighters.theres no shame in losing decisions to them.but froch? ward? dirrell? gimme a break, dont insult pavlik by pretending any of these guys are even close to his level.
the winner gets Martinez!!!
