Mayweather needs boxing more than boxing needs him

By Dallan o’ Donnell: Reports have suggested that Floyd Mayweather may end his self imposed exile from the sport in July and return to the ring. However there is lack of hard evidence from Mayweather that he will return. There has been no mention of an opponent or date set for his long awaited come back.
This would make you think why an undefeated former pound for pound champion won’t concentrate on his boxing career in his twilight years. He hasn’t fought since defeating Shane Mosley by unanimous decision last year. A return to boxing on a full time basis would allow him to concentrate on something apart from gambling and would also allow him to repair his damaged image in light of his legal issues that are still ongoing.
Mayweather talks about a possible fight with the current pound for pound champion Manny Pacquaio and that fight will only happen if Pacquaio takes all the required blood tests that Mayweather demands. But the harsh reality is that Pacquaio does not need Mayweather. Pacquaio has made a name for himself and is now the biggest draw in the sport while Mayweather will have to chase him up if he wants the biggest pay day of his life.
There are plenty of tasty fights out there without Mayweather being involved in any. Although it would be the Blockbuster fans want to see, Mayweather and Pacquaio may never happen and Mayweather needs that fight more that Manny. I would prefer to see this great Champion back in the ring as opposed to becoming a compulsive gambler.

I wish the Floyd Jr. and Sr. and all their Floydiots and Floyaddicts to make thier minds up about Manny. You claim the guys he beat i.e. Morales, Barrera, Hatton, Delahoya and Cottoo were past their primes; and Diaz, Clottey and Margarito were bums.
Yet also claim he has no skeelz and will be easy to beat. But at the same time you refuse to sign for the biggest payday ever. And the reason? You claim that he is super strong from using special drugs that only a blood test can detect. So please tell me which is it? Were they bums or hasbeens? Is he easy to beat with no skeeeellz?
And what drugs can he use to make him so good that makes you Mayweathers so scared? If drugs can turn a no skeeeellz guy into a super strong, super fast boxer, how come no one else in the world uses them? Unless you can give me logical answers I will conclude like any other sane person, Mayweathers excluded, that you guys are jealous and scared. Oh and if the Mayweathers cannot answer this I am sure I will get a dumb answer from you guessed it…..Floydiots and Floyaddicts. I like the idea of pacquiao vs martinez. I feel there’s a huge public interest in seeing these two warriors slug each other. Forget the belts or titles. Just let them fight one another. Their theme should go like “titan vs gladiator” man! I just hope promoters sees that there’s mad money to be made if they can find a way to make the bout materialize. I feel it may actually out do mayweather vs pacquiao just because promoters waited too long if the bout does get done. With all the drama that’s are happening, I for one have given up on Floyd vs manny.

well u sound like u only watch big PPV fights, thats fine. but for real boxing fans who actually watch different fighters, not just the megafights, there is plenty of other action on offer. we dont need to watch the b-grade match-ups of pac and mayweather and then spend hours online arguing the nuances of both fighters’ legal contracts.

What your article doesnt mention is that the fight fans – that is, people who make boxing POSSIBLE because they pay to watch it – do not need either pacman or mayweather. there’s plenty of other good boxers out there who are just as entertaining to watch, and the sooner people start realising this the better.

The drug test scandal, was just another way of Mayweather ducking Pacquiao. There isn’t a need for anything. Floyd has already cemented his place in history and has become a millionaire. Boxing could use a nice boost with Pac-Floyd being made. But it’s fine without it. Stop pressuring fighters. We should respect Floyd’s decision the same way we respect Barry Sanders’ choice to retire at a young age.
