Image: Maidana-Morales to go for $44.95 on April 9thBy Chris Williams: The April 9th fight between Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) vs. 34-year-old three-time former world champion Erik Morales (51-6, 35 KO’s) will be going for a steep $44.95 price tag on it for the fight at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. I don’t know about you, but that’s a lot of money to me for a fight that figures to be a terrible mismatch of epic proportions.

Morales, ranked #8 by the WBA in the light welterweight division, hasn’t registered a big win in six years since he beat Manny Pacquiao in 2005. Since then, Morales has four losses and three wins over B level fighters to get this fight. I’d like to have seen at least one good win over someone ranked in the light welterweight division like Victor Cayo, Danny Garcia, Lamont Peterson, or Kendall Holt before getting a big fight against Maidana in a PPV bout.

I’d like to see Morales at least prove that he still has something left before I pay big money to see him fight Maidana and likely get battered to smithereens. This is going to be utterly brutal. Morales doesn’t have the size or the power to compete against the powerful Maidana and it’s going to be hard to watch, especially with the big price tag on the fight. I don’t know if I want to splurge on this one. The undercard has Robert Guerrero vs. Michael Katsidis, Paulie Malignaggi vs. Jose Miguel Cotto, and James Kirkland vs. a still to be determined opponent.

I don’t mind seeing those undercard fights but I’d like to see a discount because of the lack of a good main event fight. I’d pay $44.95 to see a rematch between Maidana and Amir Khan, because their previous fight in December was an exciting one. However, Khan is a young top tier fighter, not someone making a comeback like Morales.
