Kirkland stops Berrio in 2nd round

By Jason Kim: Unbeaten James Kirkland (27-0, 24 KO’s) continued with his successful comeback on Friday night, stopping an over-matched Jhon Berrio (15-9, 11 Ko’s) in the 2nd round of a scheduled eight round bout at the Orange County Fairgrounds, in Costa Mesa, California. Kirkland, fighting for the second time since being released from a Texas prison for weapons violation, Kirkland took out Berrio in the 2nd round when Berrio dropped to a knee and the fight was halted after a count.

The bout was halted at 1:05 of the 2nd by the referee. Kirkland hurt Berrio in the opening round with a solid right hand to the head and had Berrio in bad shape for most of the round. In the 2nd, Kirkland hurt Berrio when he dug to the body with a powerful hook. The fight ended shortly after that when Berrio took a knee and was counted out.

It looked like Berrio didn’t want any part of Kirkland in this fight. It was a mismatch on paper that turned out to be just as much of a mismatch in real life. Kirkland next will be fighting on April 9th on the undercard of the Marcos Maidana vs. Erik Morales undercard at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
