Gamboa: Lopez doesn’t have what it takes to beat me

By Dan Ambrose: IBF / WBA Super World featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (20-0, 16 KO’s) made it look easy on Saturday in defeating one of the best fighters in the super featherweight division in Jorge Solis (40-3-2, 29 KO’s).

Gamboa, 29, absolutely destroyed Solis, knocking him down five separate times before the fight was halted in the 4th round with Solis down yet again. After the fight, Gamboa said “Top Rank keeps that fight [Gamboa vs. Juan Manuel Lopez] very far away because they know he doesn’t have what it takes to beat me.”

It’s hard to argue with that, because right now Gamboa looks to be the much better fighter compared to Lopez. Although Lopez, the WBO featherweight champion, does look bigger than Gamboa but he’s not looking as impressive as the Cuban star right now.

Both Gamboa and Lopez fight for Top Rank. You would think putting a fight together between them would be easy. But promoter Bob Arum wants the Lopez-Gamboa fight to build more before he matches them up. It might work in the case of Gamboa, who is looking very good.

But Lopez isn’t looking nearly as good and is struggling at times against fighters like Rafael Marquez and Rogers Mtagwa. Gamboa destroyed Mtagwa by a 2nd round TKO in 2010, while Lopez was almost knocked out by Mtagwa in October 2009 after getting badly hurt in the 11th round.

  • IAM BOXING says:

Chris John!?! When the hell was his last bout, and with who, Rocky Juavez, or something like that. Chris John had problems with him, and Both Juan Lopez ,and Gomboa would stomp Rocky out, so……………Lopez and Gamboa are top at there division, point blank period.

  • gduys says:

gamboa or juanma are not the great one in featherweight
just fight the unknown Indonesian superchampion Chris John
if they both can beat him then i called them the real featherweight champion
Chris John is not that special neither had a killing punch like Gamboa or Juanma, but he is so hard to beat. believe me, i watched his fights

  • Enlanch says:

“Every one who is saying Nonito need to move up” please lets him over there. I have other cuban guy to him. Monito should fight GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX, nextt he can move, but move back to the nothing…

Cubans got to miami to be Championsssssssss. OH YEAAAAAAA

  • IAM BOXING says:

Either Gamboa or Lopez would, smack ko Nonito Donaire.

  • G.I. says:

Juanma keeps going forward no matter how intense the situation is. He throws combinations all night, eating hard punches from well known fighters. Gamboa has no chance fighting the way he does. He’s got some entertaining moves but very sloppy ones (also). He can not let his guards down against Juanma. Juanma’s like a stiff statue when he fights always has a great posture. Gamboa is entertaining but Juanma funny to watch because he doesn’t get phazed by any hits!

  • yatusabes says:

@mr. cali north you hater. juanma has better chin and boxing abilities than gamboa. gamboa gets hit he falls.

  • Sam says:

Gamboa is arrogant, let nonito Donaire Move up and Beat Gamboa.

  • abhonda says:

Donaire would whoop both little Gamboa and Juanma on the same night! Pacquiao would knock all of them fighting @ the same time!

  • Mr.Cali North Star says:

Gamboa will destroy that Lil PU$$Y Jaunma.

  • the brahma bull says:

It’s boxing! Lopez has what it takes to beat Gamboa and Gamboa has what it takes to beat Lopez. That’s why everyone is interested in this fight. Why would people want to see Gamboa fight Lopez if Lopez doesn’t have what it takes to beat Gamboa? It’s the same reason why everyone wants to see Pacquiao fight Mayweather. It’s the perfect offense vs. the perfect defense. Therefore, this fight will be great because they both possess the skills to defeat each other. For all the Gamboa fans who feel that Lopez isn’t worth the time, there’s no need to read these posts. For all the Lopez fans who say that Gamboa is no match for him, then obviously there’s no need for Lopez to continue fighting. This fight excites me as much as Pacquiao/Mayweather because they both have skills. I only hope that Gamboa doesn’t continue to hit behind the head because that kind of fighting won’t fly in a big match. If he beats Juanma while hitting behind the head, he won’t get the credit even though he gets the win. It has to be a clean fight in order to see who is better.

  • Jm says:

Juanmanuel will kill gamboa to big to strong!!

  • smilingjoe says:

Gamboa too small for Juanma. He cant do what he did to solis with Juanma. This guy will get schooled by the bigger and more stronger rican.

  • KILLERBUD says:

    GAMBOA

  • Caribbean Cool says:

I Totally Disagree With Yuriokis Gamboa What He Did Last Night With Jorge Solis He’s Definatley Not Gonna Do With My World Champion Juan Manuel Lopez! No Way I See Juanma Knocking Out Gamboa In 8-Rounds!

  • C.B.ONE says:

Gamboa was hitting alot behind the head on sat. The kid is blazin fast and hits hard but I beleive JuanMa will beat him by ko! Gamboas chin is suspect too! and after seeing them together in the ring on sat,I expect that size advantage that JuanMa has to play a big factor. Not to mention that by the time they fight, they will be in a higher division.and Juanma’s frame looks like it would take the weight better than gamboa. But it wont be no walk in the part!

  • Mr.Cali North Star says:

Donaire move up and destroy Gamboa? Ya right,in your little midget dreams, fool. I think Gamboa can destroy PAC.

  • BNB says:

Gamboa’s punch more the his boxing abilities is what scared the soft chin Lopez. Juanmarincon has better boxing abilities, but Gamboa is faster and hits like a mule. Gambao KOs lopez in an great fight.

  • ABHONDA says:

Solis said that Gamboa hits harder than Pacquiao! I saw what Pacquiao did to Solis and He was dazed all night. How is that possible! Pacquiao knocked out Hatton cold, what Pacquiao did to Cotto, DLH, Margacheato, Diaz! look @ the damage Pac did to those guys! Gamboa is young and arogant! Donaire needs to move up and whoop this dude! He did nothing impressive
