Gamboa destroys Solis: Don’t hold your breath waiting for Gamboa-Lopez

By Scott Gilfoid: Yuriorkis Gamboa made a strong case for himself that he deserves to be considered the best fighter in the featherweight division with his 4th round knockout win over Jorge Solis at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Gamboa started off the fight on the outside but quickly had Solis on the deck in the 2nd round. Gamboa would follow with four more knockdowns before the fight was eventually halted in the 4th round with a dazed looking Solis wondering what hit him. It was like Solis was caught in a tornado and flung around the ring for four rounds.

By the time the fight was over, Solis had a confused look on his face as if he couldn’t believe what had just happened to him. This is a great win for Gamboa because he showed what an amazing talent he is. The only thing that’s keeping Gamboa from breaking into super stardom is fight with Juan Manuel Lopez, the WBO featherweight champion. Gamboa wants this fight, and supposedly so does Lopez. However, their promoter Bob Arum doesn’t seem to be in any kind of hurry to match-up his two budding stars and seems more interested in putting them in with the little known contenders in the featherweight division.

The problem is neither of these guys are going to get popular beating guys that Americans have never heard or seen before. I’m sure Solis is popular in Mexico, but I’d bet next to nobody has ever heard of him before in the U.S. other than hardcore fans. I just don’t see Gamboa getting popular beating guys like this. Arum is going to have to match Lopez and Gamboa up if he wants to make a star out of one of these fighters. Unfortunately, the loser of the fight will find himself in a bad situation unless he puts up a good fight. Anyway, none of this really matters because Arum is probably not going to be putting Gamboa and Lopez together anytime soon.
