Dzinziruk may be the best fighter in the junior middleweight division

By Dan Ambrose: Despite getting knocked out in the 8th round by WBC Emeritus middleweight champion Sergio Martinez on March 12th, WBO junior middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-1, 23 KO’s) may be the best fighter in the division right now. That might not be something that Miguel Cotto fans like to hear but I got to with who looks like the best fighter right now and that’s Dzinziruk. The Ukrainian fought remarkably well against Martinez and held his own until getting knocked out in an entertaining fight.

Cotto would have likely been knocked out in the first four rounds by Martinez unless he decided to run all night. Even then, I can’t see Cotto being able to take Martinez’s big left hands for very long without going down for the count. Dzinziruk has got a great jab and sneaky power. I saw in the Martinez fight was a guy capable of knocking out anyone in the junior middleweight division.

Dzinziruk was out of his element against the stronger Martinez, but he was facing the best fighter in the middleweight division. Dzinziruk was being asked to do a lot by moving up in weight and taking on the best fighter in the middleweight division by far. I don’t know of any junior middleweight that would have lasted as long as Dzinziruk or fought as well as him during the bout.

Dzinziruk got the better of Martinez in the 7th but then made a mistake in the 8th by not keeping his distance. Martinez then flattened him. Dzinziruk will come back from this and start in where he left off by dominating the junior middleweight division. I’d like to seen Cotto step it up and face him but I can’t see that happening. Dzinziruk is a master boxer and I can see Cotto getting a boxing lesson.

COTTO HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE FIGHTERS BUT I CAN SEE HIM HAVING PROLBEMS WITH DZINZIRUK AND OVER MATCHED IN THERE WITH MARTINEZ. LOOK WHAT MARTINEZ DID TO KELLY AND WILLIAMS. COTTO COULDNT .

  • gabe says:

  • Anonymous says:

sergey is an A level ,but perhaps not high on that level,we should find out more in his comeback fight.he is good at boxing.he was in with the very good champ, maybe great? Time will tell.

  • Boxingfan says:

you jokers must consider cotto a very good fighter if you are egging him on to fight the best in the division, even this dipstick writer is! his only fought twice in 154pnds and looked good both times. i think he should have one more tune up before fighting the best dont you think fcknuts???

    Lara would beat this guy

  • scott says:

    lmw rankings (2012)

    1.kirkland
    2.alvarez
    3.martirosyan

(cotto retires on high end of 2011, beating marg and pac)

okay maybe not pac but chavaz jnr or cintron

I agree.Even though dzinzurik got beat by a very strong middlewieght,he still will be good and he is tough, with skills. He did try against martinez, give him credit he landed some good shots also.he got knopcked out because he kept pressure on him.he came to fight and ran ino the hard punches.in heinsight he maybe should have fought defensively letting martinez tire out.Cotto would have his hands full.

i doubt kirkland goes back down to 154, he’s having trouble making 160. kirkland is too open to be a top guy at 154. that tomato can he fought almost dropped him.

i’m betting alvarez is becoming the next JCC jr. just fight bums and faded champs. i’d love to see the kid step up but GBP won’t let that ever happen

  • reverse says:

Cotto isn’t the top guy at 154. he is a warrior but he’ll get blasted at 154, who’s Cotto fought a gimpy yuri forman and a totally shot quitter mayorga. (alvarez wanting mayorga tells you enough)

dzinziruk, angulo, cintron, trout and lara all beat cotto. martinez at 154 would end his career (why is cotto ducking martinez?).

at 140 and 147 Cotto was good but he doesn’t have the power to deal with the big dogs at 154, why do you think arum is protecting him. what did manny stewart way margarito, chavez jr? both bums

The Best Fighter In The Jr.Middleweight Division Is None Other Than The Legitimate 4-Time World Champion Himself Miguel Cotto! James Kirkland Isn’t A World Champion Yet However He’s Definatly A Major Threat! Saul Alvarez Is Being”Babyfed”By Golden Boy Promotions And Hasn’t Really Been Into Deep Waters And Cornelious”K9″Bundrage Who Knows Where He’s Hiding!

  • ian says:

Aye dan… before he fought martinez, who did he fight… before this fight sergiy didn’t fight for almost a year and before that, he hasn’t fought since 2008

  • Ricardo Lorenzo says:

He’s not even a junior middleweight.. Oh dear Dan, oh dear.
