King says he’s going to make Pacquiao vs. Mayorga after Cotto

By Jason Kim: Promoter Don King is looking to setup his fighter two-time world champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 Ko’s) with a fight against Manny Pacquiao next if the 37-year-old Mayorga can beat WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) on March 12th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
As quoted by the Manila Bulletin, King said “We are going to make Pacquiao vs. Mayorga. I am giving you breaking news.”
Even if Mayorga beats Cotto, who is probably Top Rank promoter Arum’s number #2 moneymaker right now, it’s still hard to imagine that Arum will want to put Pacquiao in with Mayorga. Arum is looking to match Pacquiao against smaller fighters and Mayorga has some size to him.
Pacquiao would likely take some punishment in a fight with Mayorga and Arum might not like the risk when he can still probably match Pacquiao up with Cotto, even if Cotto is beaten. It doesn’t seem to matter whether fighters are coming off of loses.
The public will still buy into a fight as long as Pacquiao is involved in it. Mayorga has one big problem that might make a Pacquiao-Mayorga fight all but impossible to be put together. Mayorga doesn’t fight for Top Rank, and Arum likes to have his fights in house. Perhaps King, an old friend of Arum, could get him to change his mind about this. But it’s going to take a lot of wheeling and dealing by King to get that done.
However, this is probably neither here nor there, as Cotto is the favorite to beat Mayorga on March 12th. But you can’t really predict what will happen in any of Cotto’s fights nowadays due to the punishment he’s taken in fights in recent years. He could fall apart if Mayorga takes it to him in a sustained way like Antonio Margarito and Pacquiao inflicted on him in victories over Cotto.

I thought Floyd Jr is Don King’s pet.Why not he make a fight between Pacman and Floyd? his intention to fight Pacman vs Mayorga is a dumbest decision he ever had.I know that Don King is trying to look a way where he will put down the image of Pacman. But do you think Pacman will eat his offered pie? I don’t think so bcoz Pacman is not a dumb boxer…he’s the greatest boxer of all time,ok? Besides, i don’t any respect of Don King…he’s a servant of evil…he only makes money and at the same time…trying to put down especially Asian boxers. Please tell Don King that Pacman needs Floyd…that’s all.
All this speculation of a fight between Mayorga and Pac is irrelevant. Mayorga won’t get pas Miguel.
pacquiao would knock mayorga out no more then two rounds like he did with hatton.mayorga would be his own enemy due to his come foward type fighting manny would love that and also remember that manny hardly misses his shots and every punch has ko on it,this fight would be good for the fight fans that like to see a knock out,thats about it.i say not a good fight at all for boxing..

hey gus : let me tell you something about the young guys : ortiz, khan, they both being badly exposed and beated up by old guys, ortiz he’s not better then cotto , margarito , hatton clottey and de la hoya and khan it’s a tomato can for real. bradley ? please these guy was just a little better than alexander(a class b fighter) upon the young ones the only promise edwin valero kill him self. lets wait for nonito donaire , i think we have a exellent powerfull filippino ready to take pacquiao foot steps. donaire he’s 2 and half inches taller and he has 4 inches longer reach than manny pacquiao. lets see.
yea that’s true mayorga has chance to beat manny like mosley : but how in the hell people think ricardo will past thru miguel cotto new right hand? when mayorga step on the ring he will be trowing around like khan vs maidana the only thing cotto will do better is that miguel will start from the very first round to knock these fool and lift him from he’s shoes.

Mayoga is not in Manny’s class. Mayoga is a pure brawler and can get seriously hurt against Manny. King should forget about Manny. Packman should consider hungry yourn fighters…Mayoga is damaged rusty goods with no talent at all.

After MOSLEY, Pac is gonna fight MARQUEZ…homeboy’s contract is up with GB in May, and he’s not re-upping since they can’t make a 3rd fight with Pac. Mayorga fighting Pac? Possibly, but not in a year. Mayorga has as much a shot at fighting PAC as Timothy “HEAD OF STONE” Bradley, and Andre “Can’t Sell Well” Berto…slim to none.
…but the 3 most marketable fights for pac are Mosley, May, and Marquez…anyone else doesn’t factor into the equation this year or next.
Cotto will KO Mayorga…
Mayorga should ask for a Mosley rematch. He went in agnist a Roid out Mosley and he didn’t even train for the fight Mayorga was fat in that fight. I say Mayorga knocks Mosley out in a rematch

A few primefighters that pacroid could fight are as follows:
1. These are not the best, yet, but it’s a.start. Alexander, Bradley, or maidana. These are better than the chumps he’s fighting.
2. Berto, Martinez with no bogus catch weights. These two will destroy PAC, that’s why he won’t take them.
3. If you say these fights are no money, that’s just a pactard excuse. PAC fought two bums in clottey Diaz and still got cash.
4. When PAC retires he will retire with an asterik behind his record as fighting at catch weights and not the best.
Actually Mayorga has a style that would give Manny lots of trouble. Why 1 key thing to do as Manny is flurrying throwing punches at you the best strategy that worked for young Morales and Marquez was to throw right back and punch back at him when he gets hit Manny backs up if you cover up manny has his way with you Mayorga would punch back and that would give him a chance plus Mayorga is aggressive

@ gus: I don’t think Mayorga will get a fight wit Pac even if he should beat Cotto. That’s just wishful thinking by King. I’ve read where Arum said JMM is the one they want to target for Nov.
But my question to you is– Who are the young, or prime fighters you have in mind?
@gus v, You do have a valid argument. True boxing fans already picked up on it, I suspect it will take a lot longer for a Pac fan to pick up on it.
This whole thing is just a dream for King.First,Mayorga will most likely lose to Cotto.2ndly Pacquiao has already stated that he is dropping the 154lbs belt to stay in the welter class becuase he cannot keep his weight past 150lbs effectively.So this is just King trying to promote his fighters upcoming fight by trying to make it seem if Mayorga pulls an upset over Cotto he will get a shot at Pacman.
