Huck training for April bout – but not against Lebedev

By Jim Dower: WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (31-1, 23 KO’s) is currently training for an April fight in Germany. However, if you were hoping that it would be a rematch with top contender Denis Lebedev, I have bad news for you. Huck, 26, won’t be fighting Lebedev next and likely won’t be fighting him any time soon. Huck has moved on from his controversial 12 round split decision win over Lebedev from last December, and will be looking to fight other contenders rather than revisiting a rematch with Lebedev.

For fans that may have not seen the Huck-Lebedev fight, Huck appeared to get badly out-worked, out-punched and out-landed the entire fight, yet he was given a 12 round split decision while fighting in his adopted country of Germany. Few people agreed with the decision. However, Huck doesn’t plan on trying to clear up the controversial win and will instead look to take on a still to be determined opponent in April.

Huck was reportedly interesting in facing number #3 WBO contender Lateef Kayode next. However, Kayode’s promoter reportedly isn’t interested in taking on Huck at this point in time. Kayode recently looked terrible in winning a controversial 10 round unanimous decision last Friday night over Nicholas Ianuzzi. Kayode couldn’t handle the movement of Ianuzzi and was exposed as a limited arm puncher in that fight. Huck and his management obviously saw how bad Kayode looked in that bout, and wanted what would likely be an easy win over the unbeaten but still very flawed fighter.

Ideally, Huck needs to go back and give a rematch against Lebedev to prove that he’s better than him and can win without controversy. However, the chances of that happening are slim.
