Donaire-Montiel: Nonito can’t wait to get in the ring with Fernando

By Dave Lahr: Former IBF light flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (25-1, 17 KO’s) is just raring to go for his fight next Saturday night against WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (44-2-2, 34 KO’s) at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Dude, I can’t wait to get into the ring with Montiel,” Donaire said in an article at inquirer.net. Like a lot of fighters that have been spoon fed beatable opposition for most of his career, Donaire is cocky, and overconfident. That all will change as soon as he tastes the power of Montiel in the opening round. Once Donaire gets hit with one of Montiel’s left or right hands, Donaire’s cockiness will be knocked out of him and he’ll start with the same running he did against Rafael Concepcion. At that point, it’s going to be like a cat chasing a mouse because Donaire isn’t going to want to mix it up with Montiel and risk getting hurt or knocked out viciously.

Donaire was matched yet again with another soft opponent in his last fight when he was put in with the light hitting Wladimir Sidorenko, who came into the fight having lost two out of his last three fights. The win helped make Donaire look better than he is with boxing fans and it seemed to increase Donaire’s confidence to new soaring heights. This is good actually, because it’s going to make things a lot easier for Montiel when he knocked the confidence out of Donaire’s body with a single right or left hand.

I see this fight going badly for Donaire. He’ll start off good for around 30 to 45 seconds of the first rounds, but then fall into a full scale retreat once he tastes the huge power from Montiel. The fight will then become basically unwatchable for the rest of the fight because Donaire will be reluctant to exchange.
