Image: Donaire-Montiel: Fischer believes Nonito is vulnerable this SaturdayBy Dave Lahr: Writer Doug Fischer believes that Nonito Donaire (25-1, 17 KO’s) could be vulnerable to getting beaten this Saturday night against WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (44-2, 34 KO’s) in their fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Fischer, who has a keen eye for talent, spotted a weakness in Donaire’s game from his fight with Hernan Marquez last year in July. Speaking with the examiner.com, Fischer said “If Nonito fights Fernando the same way he fought that guy from Mexico on Showtime [speaking about Hernan Marquez], where he’s kind of switching back and forth and loading up with one shot, he’s not setting up with his jab, he’s not boxing tall, he could play into Montiel’s hands. Montiel has wonderful timing, a beautiful left hook to the body. We all know that left hook is a game changer.”

I think Fischer is onto something here. Donaire always jumps from side to side when he’s fighting and seems to think he’s clever doing that, but that kind of thing will leave him vulnerable to getting knocked cold by Montiel, who is excellent at timing his opponent’s movements and then lowering the boom on them with his left hook or short right hand. Donaire, when he’s hopping around like a little bunny rabbit, is vulnerable in mid hop and when he’s landing. If he does that against Montiel, he’s going to get hit with one of his big shots and it’s going to leave Donaire staggering around the ring like a drunk.

The fight will be over at that point because once a puncher like Montiel gets you hurt, he’s a deadly finisher and never fails to take you out. This is what he did with Hozumi Hasegawa, a fighter with a very similar style of fighting as Donaire. Montiel timed him and knocked him out in the 4th round last year.
