It’s more than just height. Donaire looked huge in terms of weight and frame size compared to the tiny Montiel. Just by looking at the two, my guess is Donaire had at the minimum a 15 pound weight advantage over Montiel.

That’s like a fighter three divisions above Montiel taking him on and dominating on size alone. Seriously, look at how much bigger Donaire was compared to Montiel in this fight and you’ll see what I’m seeing. Donaire looked like one of the Klitschko brothers taking on their customary much smaller opponents. What do you expect is going to happen when you got a big hulking Donaire taking on a guy that struggled to make bantamweight and had to boil down in the past couple of weeks just to make the weight.

When you add how weak looking Montiel looked because of his struggles to make weight with the huge size advantage Donaire had after re-hydrating before the fight, it’s no wonder then that Montiel was taken out. Anytime you have a fighter that is a lot bigger than another, you often see things like this. It would be interesting to know how much heavier Donaire was compared to Montiel last night, because Donaire looked like a light welterweight in their against a bantamweight. Donaire was huge after putting on weight following the weigh-in on Friday.

More power to him that he was able to put the weight back on, but let’s be real. Montiel was way too small to do much against such a huge fighter. Donaire needs to stay at this weight because he won’t have the same kind of height and weight advantages as he moves up against bigger fighters. Without the weight and height advantage over his opponent, I suspect that a lot of the success that Donaire has been having will quickly disappear.
