Clottey-Green on 3/12: Joshua looks to end two-fight losing streak

By Jim Dower: Former IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey (35-4, 20 KO’s) will be fighting on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto vs. Ricardo Mayorga fight card on March 12th in a 10 round bout against junior middleweight Calvin Green (21-5-1, 13 KO’s) at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Clottey, 33, lost his last two fights to Cotto and Manny Pacquiao. The Pacquiao fight was a particularly bad one for Clottey, because he looked like he wasn’t even trying to win.

Clottey covered up most of the fight and seemed to be content with just surviving. That loss put Clottey back at square one with his career. He now plans on fighting as a junior middleweight rather than a welterweight, because of how difficult it’s become for him to try and make 147. The unfortunate thing is that there really isn’t anyone for Clottey to fight at junior middleweight that will bring him the kind of money that he got for the Pacquiao fight. He was already beaten by Cotto, so that option is pretty much dead unless Bob Arum wants to match his two fighters back up against each other again. I can’t see that happening because no one wants to see Clottey face Cotto again and Cotto can make a lot more money fighting guys like Antonio Margarito and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., both of which are Top Rank fighters.

Clottey’s best chance to resurrect his career is to beat Green convincingly on March 12th, and then look to take on some of the top contenders in the division so that he can get ranked high enough to get a title shot. Clottey’s lack of offensive skills will make it nearly impossible for him to beat any of the champions though. He’s got good power, but he doesn’t throw enough punches.

Fighting behind his high guard all night long won’t be good enough for him to beat anyone halfway good. Clottey can get by guys like Green with that kind of low punch output style of fighting, but not someone that throws punches with any kind of frequency. Arum might want to cut his losses at some point and go in a different direction unless Clottey makes some dramatic improvement in his offensive game. I don’t see that happening at 33. Clottey is what he is.

CLOTTEY WAS PAID TO LOOSE, THAT IS WHY HIS REGULAR TRAINER WAS´NT ALLOWED IN THE USA, YOU CAN SEE EVERYTIME HE CHOOSE T O THROW PUNCHES, HE CONNECTED, HE WAS´NT EVEN CAUGHT WITH NOTHING SPECIAL.

Just like Golden Boy paid Mosley not to finish the job against Mayweather….

Clottey has lost most of his little known credibility by the way he fought Pacquiao, and it’s not hard to imagine why so many people believe he threw the fight. I wouldn’t pay a dime to see him fight again…..and I don’t care who’s the main event!

Clottey timed Pacquiao’s movements 1 minute into the fight. Clottey was able to land clean, hard shots in combination from the first round through the fourth or fifth round; the damage was beginning to pile up on Pacquiao’s face. Pacquiao did not land 1 clean headshot the entire night against Clottey…not 1! Being very familiar with Clottey; I knew he was throwing the fight as soon as he stepped out of his dressing room…because he was not wearing his Ghanian trunks and footwear. Clottey has represented Ghana on his trunks in every professional fight he’s had…except the Pacquiao fight. Add the fact that Clottey also decided not to waste money and pay his trainers for a fight he knew he wouldn’t win, and weeks before the fight Clottey himself in several interviews told us exactly how the fight would go ” for every 30 punches Pacquiao throws, I’ll throw 4 or 5″! And that is straight from Clottey’s mouth 3 weeks before the fight. I just don’t think Clottey thought it out all the way, he lost all of his support in the US for not even putting up a fight.

Clottey covered up because he didn’t want a midget to be the first to knock him out. At the Pacquiao/Margarito fight,, Clottey was quotted by HBO for saying:” If you don’t think Pacquiao has the power to hurt you, believe me he has the power”. If Clottey said that then obviously at some point in the fight he actually got hurt. At least Clottey is honest not like ODH who said Pacquiao never hurt him, but sat on his stool failing to come out for the next round..

Pac-amn fought Clottey co’z he is considered a tough contender @ WW division. His previous won against Zab Judah is what makes him one of the the elite fighter. After FMMJ notice that a lot of elite fighters Cotto, Margarito , Williams, Mosley and Clottey lined up trying to fight him. He instead challenge Hatton to move up in weight and challenge him for a dou. Bypassing the Elite fighters, and decided to retire after he realizes that it was even hard for him to beat a LWW champion(Hatton). Good theory eh??
