Should the major TV and Cable Companies have their own boxing title belts
By Allen Hmiel: Watching the mockery of defending a title by David Haye the WBA’s powerless and non fighting champion makes one wonder why the cable and TV outlets that show the fights do not have their own champions. With so many organizations in boxing having champions and awarding belts in numbers the diluted titles are almost meaning less in some cases. Witness at point the phony champion of the WBA David Haye. The WBA is letting the foolish antics of their embarrassing belt holder diminish the validity and importance of their heavyweight belt. Time for a change.
These well run and intelligently managed sports networks are providing the millions of dollars and all the effort to produce promote and display the quality fights we currently see. Why shouldn’t they the cable networks just have their own boxing rankings and just do away with the alphabet organizations that are currently draining the life and credibility out of boxing. The current boxing organizations are charging outlandish fees to sanction championship fights under their banner for what reason? Let the cable companies just develop their own boxing departments and rank the fighters and have their own champions available to fight the other cable organizations champions.
Leaderless and non directed current boxing organizations are powerless to stop fighters from fighting non contenders and the Cable companies can refuse to show fights they don’t like.
Boxing could have the HBO and Showtime champions fighting the RTL and Sky champions. The ESPN and Telefutura champions can match up and have a go at it. Who needs the WBC-WBA-IBF-IBO–UBO-WBO-the Ring all that have champions but no means to produce and air fights but charge the cable companies and the networks outrageous fees for the right to show their fighters.
Do away with the powerless current boxing organizations and just let the sports departments at the cable companies have their own champions. Just think Manny Pacquiao the HBO champion fighting Floyd Mayweather the Showtime champion. Let the companies that put up the millions of dollars to show the fights have their own championship belts. Who needs the WBA or the WBC?

If this suggestion is implemented, the situation will be worse.
Don’t put ideas in their heads. The answer is not to pay to watch the fights of any pseudo champion and they will have to fight someone half decent at least. Everyone knows that Mormeck would get knocked out again if gets a rematch with Haye.
Any way, the yanks are just as bad when it comes to ducking legit opponents. When is Floyd Mayweather jr going to announce that he wants to fight the Pac-Man?
The truth is he doesn’t and he is supposed to be an elite boxer. Pah!
You’re suggesting about adding more bodies to the excessive amounts that already exsist. WBA and co. will not just disappear over night and you’ll add more confusion. I agree it does need clearing up, but there should be a governing body that actually re-write the rule book when it comes to sanctioning fees and so on, eventually moving towards one single champion at each weight…in an ideal world!!
Does that mean Berto would only fight HBO Jr welters ?
Sounds interesting, but with all the different networks where would it end? I think somewhere down the line, the sport would end up in the same predicament. Why stop at the major networks that feature boxing, why not some of the smaller markets as well? In all honesty, as a fan I’ve always recognized the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO belts only, its pointless to have so many belts. There’s no wonder why some fighters don’t even bother with the belts no more, and only fight for money.
