Pacquiao-Mosley tickets being sold in droves: People actually want to see this thing

By Chris Williams: I can’t believe it. According to reports, there were 16,000 tickets sold for the May 7th Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley fight at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Apparently, all these tickets got purchased on a three hour period today from 10 AM to 1 PM, and it’s one of the hugest runs on tickets in Vegas ever. People actually want to see this mismatch.
I don’t mind seeing some of Pacquiao’s fights, as long as he’s being matched competitively and the tickets are complimentary. But I don’t want to see a mismatch. What is up with these people? I hope they don’t take a quick bathroom break during the action because by the time they get back, Mosley is going to look like a survivor from a car wreck. He’s going to take a bad beating in this fight.
I just hope the referee does the right thing and stops the slaughter before Pacquiao really gets started. The last fight with Pacquiao beating up on Antonio Margarito was painful to watch. The guy had no chance walking in the door and he basically served a punching bag for 12 rounds. But god, look at all these Pacquiao fans purchasing tickets. What is up with that? It can’t be Mosley fans because I wasn’t aware that he many. He’s never been a pay per view attraction, so these have got to be Pacquiao fans 100%.

I just want to see a good competitive fight. I really do not know what to expect out of Shane. The truth is that he is a 40 year old fighter that is not as fast, not as strong, not as quick, or durable that he was 5 yrs ago. I do not know why Manny and his handlers refused to fight Shane when he at least looked like a competitive fighter a few years ago, as opposed to fighting him now when he is clearly on the downside of his career. Manny has definitely brought a lot of life to boxing with his meteoric rise to the top, but he really needs to start cementing his legacy with more than just this “greatest show” on earth campaign that he is waging, and start fighting guys in their prime. What has Morales, De la Hoya, Hatton, Cotto, Clottey, or Magarito done since they fought Pac? Those guys were clearly done as fighters, and Pac mopped up the floor with them…….let’s all hope that Mosely wont be added to the list.

Did you watch last week’s fight between Bradley and Alexander? That was supposed to be a “GREAT, SUPER FIGHT” on paper. Two young undefeated, on their prime American boxers fighting for the undisputed light welterweight championship.
But, what did we get? A BORING 10 round snoozer of a fight that almost everybody wished they didn’t watch and no one would like to see again!

I doubt this would happen but it is a possibility though – don’t forget that Mosley can still punch and still has very fast hands so if Pac gets clumsy or if he tries to take a hit for the fans entertainment like he did with Margarito – he could get in trouble. Don’t forget how small Pacquiao is – every man has his limits.

I agree with you that this point is not competitive at all. But, I don’t think Berto should even be counted as an opponent for Pac – he hasn’t fought anyone THAT good to qualify him as an opponent. I would rather see him go down in LWW and fight Marquez for a final clash.
Other possibilites other than Berto would be Tim Bradley (after he wins another 2 fights), Victor Ortiz (after he takes on better names like Berto should too).

Pacquiao sells tickets because he is an exciting fighter. The fight is for sure a fight not some boxers playing tag and calling it a pure art of boxing. This author and Dave Lahr do not see Pacquaio’s fight as exciting because they have their blinders on, bias and prejudism.

Look at all the attendance records for fights in Vegas last year. They were horrible and the prices were even worse. IMHO Vegas isn’t what it was a few years ago. Have you seen the prices for this fight, even witha stacked undercard it’s a ripoff. PPV is a different story but I still don’t believe it will sellout

just a correction of your previous posting. JMM was not comfortable as a LW, he is a natural lightweight. He last fought Katsidis as a lightweight.
Of all the Packman fans, Ryan is the most sensible, coherent and makes a lot of sence in his arguments. However, at this moment in time you expect any of Manny’s bouts or Floyd to have good sells simply because there has been some life injected in boxing. The reason is simple….Manny brought the excitement which Floyd could not provide alone. Manny and Floyd need each other because there has never been such contraversy in boxing in the recent past and so the interest. All the same, arguments are really based on who you support and that is what influences belief. Personally, i am hundred percent sure Manny has less than 30% chance of beating Floyd based on Floyd’s style and technique. There has always been a genious in many sport disciplines at different times, Floyd is in boxing today. The contravesy has actually brought interest back to boxing. Manny is strong and resilient, but will fall short of Floyd’s mastery and sheer brilliance. Floyd is at the very top of boxing today, is one of the most famous and is one of the fighters who have made the most money in the sport and yet….no one has really purnished him in the ring…nobody. If he retires today, he will be the freshiest of them all with a guaranteed sane mind.

The show airs on CBS, and there is no question the talk of partnering with Top Rank began then and there.

He’s about to have a primetime feature for his next fight on network television, another on Showtime, and a deal that will put him in front of millions and millions of non-paying TV watchers.

Sure, Manny has fought a couple catchweight fights (Cotto and Margarito), but he’s usually the much smaller guy.
You can call his opponents “drained” if it makes you feel better (that’s what Floyd calls it after all), but any time you are leaving your normal weight class behind, whether to go up or come down, you are at a disadvantage. It’s a two way street.
For the record, Margarito fought over 15 fights before his Garcia fight at WW, so it’s not like he’s unaccustomed to the weight.
And Cotto weight exactly ONE pound less against Manny than he did against Clottey. And 1.5 pounds less than he did against Mosley and Judah. So stop with this “drained” nonsense, you guys are idiots.

They have caps for how many tickets go to fans versus brokers. I would not expect the pre-sale and first day run off to be any different than a Mayweather fight, or any other big event in Vegas. Don’t make this about Asian influx. It’s about genuine interest.

I actually believe what is happening is brokers are buying the tickets. They are banking on a large influx of Asian money coming in. Alot of Asian millionaires and even billionaires will be coming in for this event in Vegas. And the you bet the casinos are picking up on this action. Comps for these guys coming in and dropping some big cash in their establishments.

People love to see exciting fighters. With every fight Pacquiao gives it his all. He goes for big wins and usually comes up with them.
He has become something of a phenomenon. I have friends who do not watch boxing. I tell them it’s my favorite sport and they ask who is big in boxing right now? I say there’s this guy Manny Pacquiao… and they interrupt me and say, “Oh, isn’t that that little Filipino guy?”
See? Even non fans of the sport have heard of him through outlets like HBO’s 24/7, or the cover of TIME magazine, or on 60 Minutes.
He is crossing over, and (like Tyson) his explosive style and fan-friendly demeanor means people want to watch him fight. They’ll watch him fight a tomato can if they have to. But Mosley is by no means a no-name. So it’s no surprise this fight has interest.
I think he could do more buys than Shane and Floyd did. Which might be part of the strategy, as a way to set up the best investment for Top Rank and Team Pacquiao should Pacman and the Pretty Boy ever square off.
