Pacquiao-Mosley fight to be shown on CBS/Showtime instead of HBO – Does this mean lower PPV costs for fans?

By Chris Williams: Bob Arum has signed a deal for the Manny Pacquiao – Shane Mosley fight to be shown on CBS/Showtime on May 7th instead of HBO. For the normal fan, that doesn’t mean much of anything at all. Pacquiao fans are rejoicing at the news, happy for their hero Pacquiao but not fully grasping the fact that it won’t mean reduced prices for the Mosley-Pacquiao fight. All it will mean is that the fight could make more money for Arum, Pacquiao and Mosley if the fight brings in more fans to purchase it on PPV.

According to Dan Rafael, the advantage of the Pacquiao-Mosley fight being shown on CBS/Showtime is that it will be able to take advantage of advertising taking place during commercial breaks during prime time hours on CBS stations. This wouldn’t be just advertised on Showtime. It would be advertised on CBS stations as well. Needless to say, this will bring in more fans to purchase the fight. In addition to that, there will be separate preview shows similar to the HBO 24/7 series that will be displayed on CBS stations.

This all sounds great but what’s the point of all this if the general fan isn’t going to benefit with lower PPV costs? If it still costs $60 or whatever, how is that a gain for you and me? So what if more people watch it, how am I gaining from this? I still would have to pay tons of money to see this mismatch. And while we’re on the subject of mismatches, what good is it that more people are seeing Pacquiao fight? If he’s going to be facing mismatched opponents like 39-year-old Shane Mosley, a painfully slow Antonio Margarito and a beaten up and weight drained Miguel Cotto, how is that a great benefit if it’s being seen by more fans?

I would think it would better for fans if they got to see Pacquiao face Sergio Martinez, Juan Manuel Marquez, Andre Berto or Floyd Mayweather Jr. But Arum isn’t matching Pacquiao with those guys. We’re seeing Pacquiao being put in with fighters that he has beat before the fight even starts. If Pacquiao is going to be seen by more people due to the new CBS/Showtime deal, I don’t see that as a benefit for boxing fans and I don’t think it’s good for the sport if Pacquiao is going to be set up with nice little mismatches every time out.

Ummm sounds like arum is nervous about using hbo bc he will find out that manny cannot sell like floyd… Good move arun u smart little chew

  • anon says:

airmoks1 – ur obviously a pactard..people r dissing manny becos the cherry picking has finally become obvious to them, people gave mayweather credit cos he beat the mosley who in his last fight destroyed margarito, who was supposedly the most feared man in boxing.n mosley actually went to mannys gym in 2009 to tryn get manny to fight but they refused..so y r they fighting him now?!
u know exactly y becos just like pacs last 4 out of 5 opponents have looked terrible in their last fight..
u gotta open ur eyes to the difference between real achievements n hype

  • Failapino is Back! says:

You’re talking about Arum here. His PPV prices only go one way.

  • isko says:

The Mosley fight is to create a point of comparison between Pacman and Mayweather..if Mosley gave a good account of himself, then maybe, Mayweather will come out of the open and finally fight Pacquiao..Mosley fight could be a prelude to what we all have been waiting for..

    @MrRomero

well, tough luck mrromero, pacquiao will be considered one of the best fighters of all times when he retires. there is and has captured the imagination of millions of people all over the world not just in the US. you just have to accept the fact at this point in time, he is numero uno and has beaten all the mexican fighters and americans who were even bigger than him. in asia, he is considerd the “Bruce Lee” of boxing who defies his size with his skills. you can cry for all you want, but there is really nothing you can do about this phenomenon. you can call him fake or whatever, but the fact of the matter is that he beats all those guys that have been put in front of him. this is the reason why all the boxing experts and the media declared him as the fighter of the decade and the number P4P fighter. also, this is exactly the reason why mayweather has avoided him.

    @Chris Williams

if your boy, mayweather has got large “balls” and is not hiding, he should be the one fighting pacquiao in this event. when mosely fought mayweather last5 year, you did not complain about his age. you thought mayweather was so great that he beat mosely. now that pacquiao has decided to take on the challenge, mosely’s age immediately becomes an issue. what a bias writer you are. also, if you feel that $60 is too much for you, then don’t watch the fight.

  • Seul says:

    Chris Williams,

Why are you whinning about the PPV cost?

I thought you’re NOT a Pacquiao fan? LOL

  • olympic medalist says:

No problem to us here in the Philippines. We watch Pacman’s fight live and FREE. So many options to choose from. We can watch by local Cable in our livingroom as part of our regular monthly fee of US$ 10, or go to a Resto for same the amount with free breakfast or lunch with some bottles of San Miguel beer, or go to the first class movie house for US$ 8.50 or just go to the plaza and watch it on giant TV. So, no problem for us whether it’s HBO or CBS/Showtime with or without PPV.

The drawback here is that the Floyd-Mosley PPV can’t be compared with the supposed Pacman-Mosley PPV.

  • Floydie Sucks says:

The showtime reality may be free but the actual fight is on Showtime PPV. The Cotto-Mayorga fight would also be shown on Showtime PPV. Don’t know the cost of the PPV yet.

  • FREE247showONcbs says:

A similiar show like 24/7 or ringlife will be shown for free on CBS channels PRIMETIME. HBO charges their monthly subscribers for shows like 24/7. So to answer you….CBS will show a Pacquiao/Mosley reality show for FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

  • tauJ says:

reminds me when mike tyson left hbo for showtime.

  • tauJ says:

I think hbo will create some kind of lawsuit over this

  • paul says:

i am happy that this idiot wannabe critics is affected by arum’s decision. By the way pacquiao does not want mayweather it was mayweather who needs pacquiao.

  • angelo mendoza says:

Reminder to haters: ENVY kills! don’t let it ruin yourselves! Life is too short, let’s enjoy it to the fullest, in every possible way! can’t wait ’til fight night, I’m so excited to see the fight happens! GO Manny GO!

  • Paul says:

Face it, boxing in USA is dead.

  • manny the fraud says:

Pacquiao is like a coach bag u buy in nyc on kanal st… Looks real from the outside. It has all the looks, but on the inside its fake and has a sense of fraud…

  • pay attention says:

If you have Showtime, the fight won’t cost you anything….all showtime PPV events are free to showtime subscribers…I wonder if theyll count the total number of PPV buys, or total number of viewers, even the ones who don’t have to purchase it…seems like shady bob is trying to inflate the numbers

  • chapmmorru says:

u know this is a bunch *&&^*( up craziness.. Pacman will lose, Mosley maybe old to alot of people, i for one be laughing at all of u.. no mismatch at all.. yes i rather see Pacman fight martinez or JMM. but alot of people r not giving mosley any credit for who he is and no respect at all..

  • larame says:

No it doesn’t Im proud of HBO for not showing this Fight?………….HBO is not much better Most times …….Maybe they are worried about fight fans not watching anything on any delevery service for any price
