Montiel says he won’t give Donaire any respect on 2/19

By Dave Lahr: WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (44-2-2, 34 KO’s) doesn’t plan on giving any respect to former IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (25-1, 17 KO’s) on February 19th when they battle it out at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. I like the way that Montiel is thinking now. He was being way too nice to Donaire recently, but it looks as if Montiel has changed his tune and is showing him who’s boss.

In an article at examiner.com, Montiel said “Inside of the ring, I have no respect [for Donaire] and it won’t last 36 minutes. I am preparing myself for two wars and I know there will be a rematch after this fight and I will win that as well.”

Yes, I see a rematch in the cards for this fight because boxing fans will want to see Montiel chase Donaire down like a hunter and take him out with his lancing shots. Montiel is prepared to have to run after Donaire to get him to fight. He’s ready for any tricks that Donaire pulls in this fight. Running is going to be a survival tool for Donaire, but I expect him to stop every once in awhile and try to catch Montiel with one of his sneaky left hooks.

Montiel says “I’m not worried about Nonito being the favorite. Bet on me and get ready to make money. This is the fight I am looking for. It’s the type of fight that motivates me.”

Montiel has the goods to make this as easy fight due to his much better power and his counter punching ability. He’s going to make Donaire pay for everything he attemps on offense. This is why I see Donaire choosing to run and not throw much because he’ll be afraid to get him. He’s going to be literally shivering and cowering once Montiel starts connecting.
