Khan, Money and Focus

By Syed Jalil: OK cards on the table, I am an Amir Khan fan and believe that he is potentially one of the most exciting talents in Boxing Today. In Boxing terms, although not the complete package, he brings entertainment and an ‘Edge of the seat” quality that makes his fights compelling and can only be good for Boxing. However Khan also brings something else to the plate, which is his ability to spot an opportunity, understand the implications of the opportunity and then convert it and make himself (and Boxing as well) much more sale able. He did this when he went to the Olympics, nobody in the Olympic set up wanted him to go, but Khan made it happen, knowing full well what could potentially happen if he was successful. He has also done something similar by going to the US and (so far) successfully establishing his presence and his “Name”. Both of these ventures were extremely risky but have clearly paid off for him.

As a result of this Khan gets paid well and receives a lot of attention. This brings a great deal of jealousy from other fighters who are not in same situation such as John Murray. I have very little sympathy for such as Murray who is a great boxer but is amazingly bad at self-promotion and taking the risks required to become a “Name”.

So Khan is well paid could potentially become a superstar, which brings me Khan’s one big flaw (and it is not his chin). It is his occasional lack of focus. This happens for Khan both in Boxing and in Business. An example of this was the 10th round in the Marcos Maidana fight, after a dominant 9th round and the fact that Maidana was reluctant to come out for the 10th, Khan went ever so slightly on Auto-Pilot and as such he was caught by a wild looping overhand right. He should never have been caught by this, he should have been ready as this was Maidana’s only hope at that stage of the fight and Khan should have had his hands up.

But potentially his lack of focus on the Business side could potentially be more damaging. He seems to be allowing people in entourage take over the financial side of his career and these people are clearly not qualified to do so. Due to their unprofessional and shady practices Khan has not been able to secure an opponent for his next fight and much more importantly has lost the services of Alex Ariza.

The loss of Ariza is incredibly bad for Khan. He need to pay attention to this and apply his focus to the business side of his career and remove anybody who involved in the loss of Ariza and get someone who has an idea to negotiate a deal with other fighters.

I am hoping he will, otherwise all of his hard work could slip away very quickly.

Now i’m just confusing myself! HAHAHAHA Barrera before Roach! What ma on about?

  • Evil Scotsman says:

I know that the Barrera fight was before Roach but that further proves my point that because everyone knew Khan after the Olympics he got these fights even after being brutally KO’d. Khan obviously possesses superior skills and more entertainment than Murray but i still think Khan should have fought Murray a few years back but he dodged him to fight guys like Willie Limond instead. The only thing is Khan has vastly improved since the Prescott fight whereas Murray has kind of stayed at the same level he was at a couple of years ago!

Agree with most of this article except from the bit where the writer says that Murray is “jealous” and “amazing bad at self promotion” because the only reason that Amir Khan got such great press was because of his silver medal at the Olympics. The same reason Audley Harrison was even known to the boxing public. Okay, Khan is undoubtably the more exciting fighter but at the start of their careers there wasn’t a lot between them but everything seems to be handed to Khan on a plate to him, don’t get me wrong it’s not his fault, but it’s the opposite for Murray. Khan has had exposure since the Olympics and therefore guys like Freddy Roach noticed him and trained him therefore he got publicity in America and got big name fights. He got to fight Barrera just one fight after being KO’d by Prescott whereas Murray has never lost and noone even knows him!

Khan is the best in the division you must be dumb if you can’t see that.

  • irish boxing says:

he offered Paul McCloskey a ridiculous offer to fight him when he relised he wont have it all his own way against McCloskey in the ring

  • Pete says:

Why is everyone saying Khan is not the complete package?

I read article after article about his flaws yet who will expose them?

Not Bradley, not Alexander, not Maidana, not Ortiz… that is for sure.

Only one man can beat Khan in my eyes and that is Mayweather but even then I see Mayweather getting hit more then he ever has before.

The main reason why Kahn was so accepted by Americans is because he is trained with roach. Roach having trained p4p pacman has established himself as a great trainer due to pac’s career. Who ever is running Kahn (gbp, Freddy, his father?) are rushing his career too fast. Kahn just moved to light ww. He should do more more damage there before going to welter weight for his pipe dream with a match with mayweather that is not going to happen. Kahn should unify the light weight division, defeat maidana again convincingly, and avenge his loss to Prescott. Ultimately it’s up to Kahn, he said he would only fight for four more years before retiring.

  • TEACHER says:

Kahn will not fight anyone that poses a threat he learned his lesson with Maidana, he will insult real fighters with ridiculous offers, he will lengthen his reign this way.

  • ze punisher says:

And bring on the fight coz Khan will school Bradley, Last nights fight was a joke they looked like amateurs

  • ze punisher says:

Khan clearly said a few times last night that he wants to fight Bradley, either be it in the UK or Vegas and wants it to happen in the summer, so whatever boxing show you were watchin lastnight -Bri- you mustn’t of been listening properly. Khan has been talking about this fight for about a year

  • bri says:

@stu. he hasnt mentioned a word about facin bradley. he actually said on the sky network yesterday that bradley has not earned a shot at him . he has no intention on takin on alexander or bardley unless his hand is forced. thats where my info is comin from out of khans own mouth.

  • Stu says:

Bri, your talking like Khan is avoiding this fight with Bradley. He has been talking about this fight since he beat Malignagi. WTF are you talking about, idiot.

  • Renny says:

    superstar only in your dreams

  • bri says:

hbo needs to force khans hand and make him take on bradley. double header
    bradley khan
    alexander maidana as a undercard
unify all the belts. it will make a lot of money and will be incredible for boxin. time for khan to put up or shut up.
