Did Holyfield pull a quit job against Williams?

By Dan Ambrose: It sure looked to me like 48-year-old Evander Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KO’s) quit last Saturday night after the 3rd round against Sherman Williams (34-11-2, 19 KO’s) after getting badly hurt from a series of looping fight hands and left hooks by Williams. Holyfield ended up getting a small cut over his left eye from a clash of heads in the 2nd round, but the cut was stopped in between rounds and it was barely bleeding when Holyfield was getting royally battered by Williams in the 3rd.

Over and over, Williams was able to catch Holyfield with powerful looping rights and left hooks to stagger Holyfield. After the round, Holyfield, sounding worried, agreed to have the fight stopped after complaining he couldn’t see out of his left eye due to the blood. At the time, there was very little blood leaking out of Holyfield’s cut and he just looked old, hurt, scared and tired. His punches had no effect on Williams and weren’t slowing him down in the least.

Holyfield was bouncing around like his old self, but his punches lacked power and he wasn’t throwing enough of them with accuracy to get Williams to back off. Even worse, was that Holyfield kept coming straight at Williams, making it easy for the 38-year-old journeyman to find him with his big shots. Holyfield needs to look at this fight as a big hint that he needs to retire from boxing before he seriously gets hurt. If he’s getting battered by the C level Williams, what will happen when Holyfield steps it up in the future against someone that is actually good?
