Why doesn’t Sergio Martinez fight Dmitry Pirog?
By Dan Ambrose: It looks pretty clear that WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KO’s) isn’t going to luck out and get a big money fight with a current two-division world champion Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr. As such, Martinez needs to go after a unification bout against unbeaten World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight champion Dmitriy Pirog (17-0, 14 KO’s) as the next best thing.
Pirog is certainly a better option for Martinez compared to the skinny middleweight prospect Andy Lee (24-1, 18 KO’s), who has already been badly exposed by Brian Vera in a 7th round knockout loss in 2008. I can just see Martinez crushing the slender-necked Lee with the first left hand he catches him.
That’s hardly going to be an entertaining fight on HBO, and not one that’s going to increase Martinez’s cache any among fans. Martinez plans on fighting on March 12th in a fight that will be shown on HBO. He needs an opponent that can last long enough for him to show his skills.
Lee isn’t the answer. In his last bout, he destroyed Paul Williams in a 2nd round knockout in November. Before that, Martinez defeated WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik and gave him a real beating in that one-sided fight.

Martinez avoids a fight with Dmitry Pirog!
Martinez vs Pirog would be a great fight… Pirog has a title to stake, Sturm got a title too but he doesnt seem to ever want to fight nobody, u got Zbik? but nobody really knows him…Martinez should try to unify and become undisputed thats what a real champ is supposed to do….
everyone made a big deal when roberto guerreo quit on yordan !! even me thinkin yordan was the real deal then comes caballero n schools him!! pirog looks good but i think jacobs was overrated n finally fought someone that he couldnt bully!!! i think pirog will be great but isnt yet ready for a big fight with martinez he might beat martinez but the big stage might get in his head
I would bet my money on Pirog if Martinez faces him.
Golovkin will rule middle weight wen his chance comes
Pirog is a better boxer.
I don’t think Martinez would have a problem with any of the top middleweights right now, including: Pirog, Sturm, Sylvester, Zbik, Golovkin, or Macklin. By the way, what ever happened to Andy Lee? He was mentioned as a top contender, but seems to have disappeared after the cancellation of his bout against Urbanski. Martinez is a level above Lee, but I still enjoy watching Andy. I hope Manny Steward puts Lee back in the ring as soon as possible. Happy New Year Everybody!
To much risk and not enough money for Martinez. Pirog is a very slick technician who also pressures his opponent. Williams, Pavlik, and Citron are easy to hit. Pirog is not and is very smart. I would love to see him fight Martinez. I just dont see Dibella doing it. Daniel Jacobs needs to forget about a rematch as well because Pirog is very special a puzzle I dont see anyone figuring out anytime soon.
I hope he does go after Pirog, but Sergio has fought the best in each div this is when you take a break maybe fight Lee, but after he must fight pirog or sturm to solidify his status at Middleweight. I don’t blame Sergio he has put his work in and like every boxer he wants a big payday just like manny and every other boxer once they achieved a good level of success. Oscar was stupid enough to give manny a shot @ a big payday and beat himself before the fight, so far manny is unwilling to give an up and coming fighter any consideration what a gracious man
you hold this real high
you should encourage him to
the longest standing title holder
in the division
Felix Sturm
or is your guy not good enough yet
to me martinez should be fighting
the second tier fighters
i can name them but ill wait till
your next article
keep it real
dmity has nothing to
offer martinez
In my eyes he’s beaten Cintron, Williams, Pavlik, and Williams again in a rematch. If Sergio goes after an easy opponent I won’t take anything away from him. I just hope he doesn’t turn it into a habit. If you’re a top P4P fighter you’re allowed one free pass.
Pirog isn’t well known enough yet. Yes, he is strong and talented, but he’d probably be exposed anyway, by a veteran like Martinez. At this point though, they’d be lucky to sell a few thousand tickets for a Martinez/Pirog bout. Only serious boxing fans would attend.
@ Dan Ambrose:Call Sergio martinez and ask him, fool
Martinez has nothing to gain. If he beats Pirog, people will immediately call Pirog an overhyped prospect because he only has one okay win under his belt. Martinez will get zero credit and it will do nothing for his goal to be #1 p4p. Pirog needs to get at least one more fight to show he doesn’t suck. He hasn’t done anything to deserve a fight with Martinez. On the financial side, no one knows who the k Pirog is so he won’t sell any tickets. Andy Lee at least has a small Irish following that will bring in some cash in New York. None of them will help is career, but he’ll at least get some money with Andy Lee.
hey chris willaims and dave lahr, please consider this article..dont just focus on pacman whoever he’s fighting, why dont you morons post like this, martinez vs williams! marquez vs chris john 2! berto vs cotto!
