Image: Roach thinks Mosley is a tougher opponent for Pacquiao than Berto or MarquezBy Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach appears to be on board with what will likely be the selection of fading 39-year-old Shane Mosley as Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent on May 7th in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Mosley has looked bad in his last two fights going 0-1-1, Roach still sees him as a tougher opponent than WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Andre Berto.

In an article at abs-cbn news, Roach said “It won’t be an easy fight for Manny. I think he’s a tougher opponent than Berto or Marquez. He can punch with either hand. But if the fight pushes through, I’ll insist on a drug test. He’s been known to take steroids and it shows in his body.”

What Roach isn’t saying is that Mosley quickly runs out of gas after only two or three rounds nowadays. To be sure, Mosley is perhaps more dangerous than Berto and Marquez for three rounds, but he loses his stamina and power quickly after that point.

Still, it’s hard to see Mosley as being tougher than Berto right now. Berto appears to be fighting at a higher level than Mosley. However, if Roach and promoter Bob Arum are looking for an easier opponent to fight to keep Pacquiao winning, then Mosley is probably the way to go.

Berto and Marquez would be very tough fights for Pacquiao and I’m not sure he can win them, because these guys have boxing ability and aren’t showing signs of being shot the way that Mosley is.

As far as Mosley being tested for steroids, does that mean that Pacquiao will take the same tests as Mosley or does Roach just want Mosley to have to take the tests and not Pacquiao? I don’t see the point of Mosley having to take any tests, because this is pretty much a sure thing win for Pacquiao. Why does Mosley have to be tested for steroids? They should just fight the fight and forget about extra tests.
