Marquez no longer a possibility for Pacquiao

By Dallan o’ Donnell: Juan Manuel Marquez has apparently priced himself out of a fight with pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao, according to Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach. Marquez had requested a 50-50 purse split.
With Marquez now off the list of potential opponents for Pacquiao this leaves only two others- Shane Mosley and Andre Berto. Mosley is the most likely and I expect that fight to happen as does Freddie Roach who said that negotiations for a fight with Mosley are still going on.
Roach said that in terms of probability the likely opponent would be Mosley. Roach also expects Mosley will be a tough test for Manny. “He will be at his best. He will be Manny’s toughest opponent than that crazy one I don’t know who”, referring to Floyd Mayweather.
Unfortunately I don’t share Roach’s enthusiasm about this fight being Manny’s toughest. Mosley is far beyond his best years now and could be thinking of that one last big payday.
Although I do expect him to train hard and give it his all and maybe he can turn the boxing world on its head. I would have preferred to see Marquez in there with Manny but even more so I would have preferred to see Mayweather in there with Manny hopefully they can make that fight happen after the Mosley/Berto bout.

Marquez just want a big payday for his last fight (it would be his last if it is with Pacquiao). And to minimize damage who could just quit after the first couple rounds.

That’s very a good idea Marquez against Maidana. Counter puncher and guy likes to brawl. It’s going to be rock n roll. But I think If Maidana knock Marquez down I don’t think he could fight again. I go for Maidana for KO. A slow Katsidis even knocked him down how much more for Maidana which has 90% KO on his resume.

WHAT? Manny was already on the top when ask for 50-50. They even offer Floyd 60-40. 60% goes to the winner and 40 for the loser. That’s a good deal. Why they still don’t want it? SCAREDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD. lol
When they crafted their offer to Manny, they knew exactly where it’s heading- to the garbage. Thus, I believe they are doing it for publicity sake. Marquez simply wants to beat Manny without throwing a punch. It was a smart way of saying I am better than you but I am not fighting you..But if Manny takes the bait, then he can lose with his millions…just like Floyd, he wants to make the most out of it as that maybe their last multi-million fight..Do you think, Floyd will still be getting 25M if loses to Manny? No of course nobody will pat him and he knew it. There is so much at risk for him than Manny. He will be lucky to get 5M for his next fight if ever he fights again after a lose not necessarily against Manny..As in Marquez case, it is purely retirement money.
Maybe Marquez should consider facing Maidana first, before he aims too high. I wonder how Marquez would handle Maidana’s power-packed punches. And if Marquez considers Maidana as “small potatoes”, then he should fight the guys Pacquiao has beat, guys like Cotto, Clottey or Margarito. And if he can beat any of these guys, then I’ll be one of those who’d support his fighting Pacquiao. Otherwise, Marquez should just shut up.
Marquez has evolved as far as he will in the lightweight division.he may get lucky with a junior welterweight big win but that is doubtfull.
If JMM really wants a 3rd fight with Pacquaio, he must not make demands but accede to the demands of the Pacman camp. I’m sure he will be offered somewhere around what he got in his fight with Mayweather. But if he insists on getting an equal share of the money, Pacman will never fight him specially since other boxers who can attract PPV numbers would be willing to settle for much smaller share which will still turn out to be their largest purse thus far.

Marquez doesnt worth of what he want to purse fighting Pacquiao. The first time they fought, Pacquiao is not the same fighter as of today. If the trilogy push through, it’s a big mistakes on the part of Marquez because it would be his last fight and probably Marquez knew it!

He wouldn’t have gotten any share up to 500K. When he fought Money May, his purse was @3.2 million (I’ve also heard $4 mill) and $1 for every PPV above 1 mill.
Yeh, it was reported that aside from a guarantee $5 million, he is also asking $5 share of the PPV exceeding 500,000 which may equate to a potential $5 million if the PPV reach 1.5 million. I wonder what his $ share of up to 500K.

It’s not the 5 million. It’s the PPV rev which can go up to 10million. So in essence, he is asking for 8-12 million. NOT!

Margo got $7 million which included his share of the PPV. He might have a guarantee of $3 million. Margo is also a Top Rank Fighter so Uncle Bob has a slice of his earnings.
JMM is asking for a guarantee of $5 million which did not include his share of the PPV. JMM is also not a Top Rank Fighter which is also works to his disadvantage.
Marquez initially asked for a 50-50 split and when team Pacquiao scoffed at the idea he asked for 5 million. I think 5 million is reasonable, and unlike Pacs last two opponents Marquez actually deserves it. And furthermore how much do they think they are going to have to pay Mosley?

Manny is a way different fighter. When he fought JMM last time he only had a left hand and came straight at you. When he moved up is when he worked on different techniques ie. foot work, and his right hand. That was in large part due to accepting the fact that if he stood in front of bigger guys and traded he would get hurt far worse than any flyweight or lightweight would touch him up.
Does anyone really think that JMM would have beaten either Cotto, Clottey or Margarito?

It should be pretty obvious by now that Marquez does not really want the fight. The price he is asking for is the price of his scalp. He knows very well that if he fights Pacquiao now it could be his last so he’s asking for his retirement pay.
Didn’t JMM get just $30,000 when he lost to Chris John in Indonesia??? This is right after salvaging a controversial draw with PAC (judge error gave JMM the draw). JMM avoided a rematch with PAC and fought Chris John in Indonesia on his next fight for a paltry sum.
How about a rematch with Chris John then as Chris remains undefeated to this day?? I’m sure JMM would receive more than $30K on this rematch.
JMM should have lowered his asking price by half 2.5 million and the fight with PAC is on. Where can JMM get 2.5 million or even 1.5 million guarantee on his next fight???

You’re right about Manny having been in wars and that taking a lot out of a fighter. Even more so the reason he would relax on the next fight. And only Manny can take a fight against Shane Mosley and call that a “relaxed” fight.
But as far as JMM having Manny’s number, cmon man. This isn’t 2-3 years ago. Manny has gotten better and JMM older. Especially at a heavier weight JMM stands no chance brother. Berto is still too inexperienced, he’d get worked to. No fights out there other than Mayweather, and after the hurting Manny got after Margarito there’s no way in hell he can take on Martinez. Manny’s still human man.

Achilles, Marquez couldn’t knock down Pacquiao even once at 126 lbs and 130 lbs so what makes you think he can even hurt Pacquiao at 147 lbs or even 140 lbs? In both their fights, Pacquiao was clearly the aggressor and Marquez was the counterpuncher. That doesn’t change at 147 lbs or evenb 140 lbs, with the main difference being that Pacquiao will probably be able to hurt Marquez more easily.
Marquez is not worth $5M, period. He made $1M vs Katsidis while Pacquiao made $20+M vs Margarito yet he wants a 50-50 split!?! More likely, GBP is pricing Marquez so high because their output deal with HBO expires in 2011 and if Marquez gets beaten by Pacquiao, they will have nothing to fill those HBO dates given to them.
I don’t think it has anything to do with money. I really think Marquez should have asked for 60/40 split. get at least 4 mil that would be agreeable and legit. but I think that manny has been in some big wars and has taken some beatings he has taken the kind of beatings that take out the best in a fighter and shorten his career. I don’t care what anyone says you can’t keep taking beatings like this without it having an effect on your career. Marquez has largely fought in Lightweight against the best in the div but he has taken less big punches by bigger men. If Marquez were really to fight Manny next I truly feel Marquez would solve the manny equation and beat him and I think Manny’s team are afraid of that as well so they are looking for an easy fight to guage where manny is physically and menatlly right now.
