Khan says he’d like to fight Mosley, Marquez, Ortiz and the Bradley-Alexander winner in 2011

By Jason Kim: World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) has big dreams for 2011 in terms of opponents he’d like to fight. Khan, 24, barely survived his bout with Marcos Maidana last weekend and had to hold, push and run from Maidana in the last three rounds after getting tagged hard by Maidana in the 10th.

Instead of seeing the fight as a sign that he has major areas that need to be worked on before taking on better fighters than Maidana, Khan says he wants to take on Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez, possibly Victor Ortiz and the winner of the Timothy Bradley vs. Devon Alexander bout next year.

Khan will have to get sloppy seconds if he plans on taking on Mosley, because he’s likely going to be fighting Manny Pacquiao on May 7th if Bob Arum gets his way. Because Khan wants to fight next in April, it pretty much rules out Mosley as his next opponent.

Marquez could be a possible opponent next for Khan, but he’s going to want to be well paid. Khan won’t be able to get Marquez for cheap. Ortiz would be a doable fight because he’s coming off a 12 round draw with Lamont Peterson, and that’s someone that Khan can probably easily negotiate a fight with and beat unless Khan’s chin has been compromised by the big shots that Maidana was nailing him with in the last three rounds of the fight. We won’t know for sure if Khan is the same fighter he was previously until he takes on someone that can punch like Ortiz and Mosley.

On Steve Bunces’ radio program, Khan said that he wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr after taking on Mosley, Marquez, Ortiz and the Bradley-Alexander winner. Khan says that after taking on those fighters he wants to “Then [fight] the likes of Mayweather and bigger names in the pound-for-pound rankings cause I got the style to fight those guys.”

Khan needs to reign in his ambitions and just hope he can get through his next fight without staggered and battered again the way he was against Maidana. Khan didn’t show that he’s good enough to dominate Maidana, and should consider himself fortunate that he didn’t get knocked out. Khan needs to be very careful in who he fights next because his chin may be compromised and weakened by the big shots that Maidana was tagging him with.

Khan loses big to Marquez, Pacman, Mayweather, Bradley. And of course we all know he’s scared s%&$less of a Maidana rematch. THAT would be a great fight to watch, and would finally shut up all these Khan lovers who think he can do no wrong. Yeah, he’s talented… we get it. He just isn’t as great as they think he is.

  • reedj says:

Maidana got his a– kicked fair and square sure Khan got tagged but who won the fight and power wise who fell?

  • Ratz says:

Totally agree with dvan. Khan v Marquez would be a good fight. I could see Khan trying to outbox him on the outside using his height advantage and coming in with jabs and combinations, but the more the fight goes on the little warrior in Marquez would come out and he would try to wear Khan down. If they fought i think Khan would have to take him out inside 6 rounds or else Marquez would drag Khan into the trenches and wear him out. Ultimately getting a knockout. But it certainly would be a fascinating fight

  • Ratz says:

I think Khan could beat all four of these guys on his day. But then again he could get sparkled by all of them as well !!! Just depends on his luck on the night! Pow pow pow

  • dvan says:

I think marquez would be a good fight. I see Marquez schooling Khan though. Marquez has too much heart an accurancy for khan to get away with. I would definately watch this fight.

  • lou says:

Khan will beat any of these guy’s I think he should avoid Madaina cause that kind of power hitting you damages the brain just ask Frnando Vargas after Trinidad knock him down 5 times using those cement hand wraps

  • G says:

I expect maidana to have lost his heart after the beating he took for 9 rounds, dont be suprised if he is not the same fighter, just look at the beginning of round 10 he was ready to throw in the towel

  • Jack Johnson says:

Easy Ko for Canelo. As raw as his it all he needs to do is land a couple of punches. He is a full fledge welter with heavy hands. He can KO Khan.

  • pact4rdsbl0w says:

Canelo would be defeated, he needs more experience.

Khan looks good fighting that old men in the photo, is he following pacsteroids’s example in picking opponents?

If he dares take on the great Marquez he will be embarrassed by a real champion.

  • juan flores says:

    yes canelo ko in 7

Khan clearly clearly won the fight by 3 rounds at least – the punch stats are clear and the judges were clear as was nearly every commentator. Not all fights are that decisive – that’s why we have a points system. Khan won fair and square. Deal with it. Its pointless saying if he hadn’t floored Maidana because the fact is that he did – he picked a great shot and landed it with power because it had been practiced and was part of their game plan. His reactions under pressure in the last three were concerning and did almost cost him the fight without a doubt but his heart carried him through and that won him the fight. It wasn’t luck, or the ref it was his will to win and to survive. All credit to Maidana who also fought a great fight – both fighters should be getting credit and thanks in these forums not derision and hate. They entertained us more than any other fighters this year – anyone disagreeing should go find another web site.

  • eddyboy says:

Khan is good but there is s lot better in welterweight. Apart from the body shot that floored maidana, I say Khan would have clearly lost. He has a lot of work to do in his defence, he doesn’t have 1 punch knock out power… Mosely would beat Khan.

  • indas says:

@ lobo just because mosley hasnt looked good in recent fights doesnt mean it wouldnt be good competiton for khan

  • lobo says:

Khan will not fight Maidana he should and everybody wants to fight Old man mosley

  • indas says:

@ wildboy khan has well and truly filled hattons boots

  • indas says:

marquez v khan would be a true battle
mosley v marquez i would like to see
but i dont see ortiz ,alexander, bradley or judah standing a chance with him .i didnt like khan this time last week but since he won that battle which alot are calling fight of the decade he well and truly put his name on the worldwide map

  • A.J says:

ricky hatton who? u mean ricky flattened not once but twice then retired and found a new hobby which i think u knw what.

  • wild boy says:

amir you were getting knocked out by maidana, good job for you that cortez was the ref.

if shane mosley wants to KO a sparring partner he’ll call you but instead youll just go back o fighting bums again.

youll never fill ricky hattons boots

  • Foreal says:

Khan must be smoking something. Sugar hits a lot harder than Maidana. Don’t be fooled with his peformance against Floyd, he was fighting the best there is in this business. However, it is also good to dream sometimes…though not all the time.

  • gio says:

    @Kira well said man

  • Riaz says:

From what I remember of the Ortiz fight, it was 10 rounds, not 12.

In the khan fight, I remember Khan landing a stunning body shot in the first to floor Maidana (at this point both fighters were fresh and not tired, so you only have to consider the strength it took to floor a fighter like Maidana)

Maidana rocked Khan in the 10th… quite late into the fight where both fighters were fatigued. Madiana is still a big puncher as even when you’re tired, the punch is the last thing to go, so no doubt Maidana’s punches were still bombs above what the average LWW fighter could throw…yet Khan stayed on his feet and didn’t hit the floor once…

    Need I say more?

P.s. Love how people are refusing to call Khan “glass chin” anymore…so now people are debating whether he’s “the same fighter” after his chin might have been “compromised” by Maidana?—- PLEASE STFU

  • Kira says:

It was a 10round fight not 12round and Ortiz was clearly robbed. Amir did well to stay on his feet in the 10th against Marcos but he is vunerable and that makes him exciting and watchable.
I think he should forget about Mayweather as he is in a class of his own and perhaps focus on the winner of Bradley-Alexander as that would be a very tough fight.

  • True Fan says:

i love how Khan beats Maidana and shows true heart in doing so, but Ortiz who got knocked down several times by Maidana and showed no heart by quitting is still revered by these “pundits” as being a top fighter and held in higher esteem than Khan.

    Jokers

  • al maktab says:

King Khan will destroy that foul-mouthed, waste-infested Fooloyd Jr. Flawed Jr. should just allow himself to go to jail to escape Khan’s wrath, and since Fraud Jr is guilty afterall. Froid Jr. is a criminal from a convicted criminal family.

  • Liam says:

First they say khan has no chin and then it may have been compromised by the big shots he took. Come on, this is becoming ridiculous now.

  • resistnsmoke says:

Ortiz is a harder hiter than maidana, and much quicker, i can see him beating khan if he has the right game plan and sticks to it.

  • just a boxing fan says:

Khan’s lack of dominance against Maidana isn’t because Khan isn’t ready for elite boxing, it’s that Maidana is right up there with him. They both will clean out the light welterweight division and then rematch to settle it.

I pick Maidana winning the rematch, he’ll be hungrier and Khan will get hurt again. Without Cortez and that left hook in round 1, Khan may not get the win.

  • GIRL says:

khan is dreaming to much…wake him up
