How can Americans say Khan didn’t deserve to win against Maidana?

By Chris Gary: Reading the reactions to last Saturday’s fight of Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana it seems to me that the majority of American boxing fans know nothing of the sport.

How anyone can say Khan didn’t deserve to win the fight is beyond me Khan was the quicker more active Boxer and landed more punches than Maidana and he proved he had more heart than anyone had expected. Everyone saw that Khan was troubled in the last three rounds but Khan had dominated seven rounds and the other two were equally shared and the people who said there were boos coming out of the crowd must have fantastic hearing cause all I heard were thousand of cheers and the boy from Bolton did a nation proud and proved he had a chin to the world and more importantly to himself.

The United Kingdom are bringing some major prospects coming into the sport as well which again the Americans seem to dismiss and write off without actually watching them which amazes me because of the likes of Kell Brook, Nathan Cleverly, Frankie Gavin and Jame Degale as well as having Carl Froch ( I don’t actually like but somehow he seems to win ) David Haye and of course Amir Khan.

There is always one boxer that stands out that the Americans slated and said was overrated was Joe Calzaghe and he unified every title in the Super Middleweight and the the ring title in Light Heavyweight he might have fought two old fighters in his last two fight but he was 37 himself and Hopkins was and still is a good fighter and anyone who goes undefeated deserves credit not criticized he might have fought some bad fighters but he also fought the best in the weight class and beat them Mario Veit, Mikkel Kessler, Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones Jnr, Chris Eubank, Byron Mitchell and at the time the Americans biggest prospect of the time Jeff Lacy and he was the never the same after the lesson Calzaghe taught him so when it comes to boxing there are more boxers outside the USA that will be champions of the sport so keep an eye out on the British Scene.

Khan won the fight without a doubt, but if my favoroite fighter were to win a fight in that fashion i would be very disappointed. Maidana defo won my respect in that fight and i reckon in rematch where maidana doesnt need to spend the first 4-5 rounds adjusting to khans speed maidana could win. Apart frfom the seemingly lucky liver punch that khan landed his punches didnt seem to carry alot of power at all (i say lucky because he failed to land anything closely resembling that shot in the 11 rounds afterwards), it was his quick footwork that won him the fight more than anything. Khan knew everything he needed to know about maidana goin into that fight so i cant see him bein any better in a rematch. People think khan opted to brawl but the fact of the matter was, maidana closed him down better than anyone thought he would..

  • mountain says:

Khan.a decent boxer but I am sorry he lost that fight.Amen.

  • Ozstriker says:

Isn’t there a saying in boxing ‘Hit & Don’t Get Hit?’, well Khan hit Maidana bad enough to leave Maidana screaming in pain on the canvas, Khan dominated most of the fight, had a 10-8 round for the knock down & also gained an extra point for Maidanas dirty elbow that he hit cortez with, Maidana showed his lack of class by twice attempting to ko khan when khan put his glove out to touch in a sporting manner, yeah the rule is hit & dont get it but then there is such a thing called class, maidana has none, he is just a brawler with a average jab, khan on the other hand has real pedigree with the tools to take him to super stardom, there will always be some americans who hate on british fighters, which is why us brits should throw even more support behind our fighters, we see floyd & we appreicate class when we see it & give them cridit for it, we have a heavyweigh champ & a classy boxer like khan & still get haters, so listen haters, british boxing has always been here and was & always will be here to stay, we have more british fighters comiing up who are destined for stardom, so youve been warned, the brits are coming !

He got the win, even though he could have lost it on my card of scoreing.

  • hodgy says:

@ sammy materdor jiminez or what ever your name is, gridiron players wouldnt for a second be able to compete in professional rugby even if they are given a year to learn the sport. they would probably break in the first scrum without all there safety gear. gridiron sucks thats why no other country bar america cares about it. same goes for your world series of baseball, how can it be a world series when only american teams enter it? american sports kinda suck an before ya even try to slate soccer, ist the biggest sport in the world so theres not really much ya can throw at it!

  • Mike says:

The same people who say khan ran think dirrell boxes….

  • Mike says:

A lot of americans do think he won. Don’t think the buffons on here represent the whole of america.

  • Argiboy210 says:

there are some absolute retards on this site !

Maidana won 5 rounds maximum including the last 3 … Khan won 5 out of the first 6 and there was a point deduction and a knockdown so he won 7 points to 5 if u call the other 2 rounds even

its Maidana’s own fault he lost and he didnt jump at the point for rematch running out the ring

  • Punchy Potorff says:

So Mr Gary, any comments on how Joe “Bought And Paid For” Cortez helped your superstar Khan the WHOLE FIGHT? Yeah, your guy’s talented. He’s also heavily flawed, in case you haven’t noticed. He get’s hit alot, has marginal power, and runs 300 mph to keep from getting hit. Other than that, you’re exactly right. Yeah that’s it… Khan is perfect. Pfffft

  • favalessa says:

maidana will be avoided more than before luck of affraidness. khan will be unted down from the veterans easly and he will be stripped of the title from a tomato khan(can)

  • JOE KHANTEZ says:

is latin american a race? LMAO

  • Michael129@aol.com says:

What the f@ck is this thing about Americans not liking Khan because his not American????? Maidana is NOT American either, WTF.

  • Michael129@aol.com says:

Because Maidana won round 3,6,7,10,11,12 (exactly as leddermens card with the exception of round 11)- Joe Cortez didn’t let Maidana fight from the inside. Khan had Joe cortez behind him, Golden Boy behind him, and Freddy Roach and Ariza behind him.. Maidana in the other hand had very little behind him except an impressive record, a robbed fight from him against Kotelnik inwhich Maidana should have been the through Champion not Kotelnik or Khan.. It seems like Golden Boy don’t want to give Maidana any love.

  • wtf_isgoinon says:

Amir Khan was clearly lucky to survive the late rounds from the huge onslaught of hard hitting Maidana.

Had Maidana landed those shots in early rounds, I don’t Khan think could last till the end.

  • TORY says:

PlEASE DON’T USE THE TERM “WE AMERICANS”. I am American, I was there seated 7th row ground floor. I had Khan clearly winning the fight rounds. My socre Khan rounds 1. 10-7, Rounds 2-7 khan I gave Maidana 8th 10-9 9rd 10-8 11th 10-9 12th round gave to Khan. 116 to 110 Khan.

  • Great Article says:

WELL DONE FOR SPEAKING THE TRUTH

  • Clevelandfan says:

Khan clearly won the fight there should be no argument about that. But he could easily loss if Cortez would had let them fight on the inside. The rule is simple it the opponent is holding you and you have one hand free you punch. Threw the whole fight Cortez step in to stop that.

  • ze punisher says:

Hahaha Blinge, so true! It’s comical when you hear someone win the Superbowl and you hear them shouting “We’re the best in the WORLD!!” Errrm dumbasses no one else in the world plays that game!

  • Blinge says:

Why are you yanks showing so much attitude today. Sure your the best at basketball, American football and baseball, but that is because nobody else plays those sports. Nowadays the American boxers are not as good as they were.

  • Pete says:

    Why don’t you like Froch?

    Pascal, Taylor, Dirrell, Kessler, Abraham

His last five fights. Who else in the sport can equal that?

  • G says:

kahn won the first 9 rounds & lost the last three, watch the god damn fight, he picked Maidana apart, and he was about to give up. most fighters would not beat Maidana at all that includes Bradley & Alexander. kahn wanted to trade with maidana early on & then got caught by a “hail mary” punch which changed the last 3 rounds….simple as that.

  • ash says:

ok whats the difference between running and avoiding punches, boxing is about using your brain and not standing there where you will get punched!

If he stood there and got punched over and over he would of lost, so what your saying is if you move around and avoid being hit your a coward if you get your face kicked in and lose your not good enough.

You people cant be pleased if you win your a loser if you lose your a loser, your pathetic!

  • MoneyMay says:

I agree Khan won by a very slim margin, however i wasn’t impressed. He looked really really good in the first half of the fight, then once Maidana turned the pressure up he didn’t look good at all, plus the refing did favor Khan. I still am impressed with the win but would have liked to see more.

  • johnny boy says:

KHAN WON THIS FIGHT IN IMPRESSIVE FASHION. REMEBER FOR ALL MAIDANA’S MUCH HYPED POWER IT WAS KHAN THAT PUT HIM DOWN NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND.

ALSO WATCHING THE REPLAYS OF THE KNOCK DOWN, KHAN CUDDA LEGIMATELY LANDED A FEW SHOTS TO HIS HEAD TO PUT HIM TO SLEEP BEFORE HE HIT THE DECK. I THINK HE CHOSE NOT TO.

  • PAC STOP FIGHTING WHACK FIGHTERS says:

listen, khan won the fight so dry ur eyes u sore losers

  • Dat's rite says:

Hey, why don’t we get Ziggy Stardust and George Michaels in the ring?

  • BLUE DOG says:

khan WON THE FIGHT, BUT HE DID GET A LITTLE HELP FROM THE REF

  • Doc says:

Khan deserved the win but he lost the fight. He didn’t win as mush as he escaped being knocked out. And it was not impressive. At first Khan looked spectacular. But he couldn’t finish and when he got rocked he ran to the finish line. He got the win but all the praise he’s getting about the next grear boxer is really premature. He has potential but lets not get ahead of ourselves. He won the decision but he was on thin ice for the last three rounds

  • Sammy "Matador" Jimenez says:

I think an Amerincan Football team would beat the best Rugby teams in England. They would just need a week to learn the rules.

  • Sammy "Matador" Jimenez says:

I would like to know who is better or even close to the USA in baseball and Basketball?

  • OHRLY says:

I hear you Chris. There are a lot of people that just don’t seem to know what they are watching when they watch boxing.

America likes to be the best and when they aren’t they seem to turn their back on the sport. Look at the decline in baseball and basketball as the American dominance has dwindled. Hockey and Soccer are both not well liked in the US either. But OH BOY DO THEY LOVE FOOTBALL!! I wonder why?

  • dannlad says:

@the king… yeah and ali and tyson really love ur country dont they!!! not!

  • true boxing king says:

King i think wot the writer is saying the americans dont give the brits respect they deserve in the ring and the froch thing he is a great fighter its his persona that people dont like thats why he put him in the list of the best british fighters.

  • true boxing fan says:

as being a boxing fan all my life i have to say kahn might of ran but didnt muhammed ali and to king saying about american boxers tyson was a good boxer but great not so much he came up against the greatest boxers he was blown away, roy jones jnr was only good when he was on drugs i cant knock ali he was the greatest but its not just americans and british that have great fighter but the world.

  • Chase-Dallas says:

Khan did deserve to win. The problem was that it did have something to do with the ref and even then, it wasn’t too impressive overall.

  • MODUS says:

Khan may have won on points but Maidana walked away with the moral victory. He hunted down Khan the whole fight, and aside from the body shot, he never looked hurt. Khan’s fans should not be worried about his chin, they should be worried about his power! He wont last two minutes with Pac or Mayweather.

  • skinnysteve says:

a couple more “wins” like this one and khan will be heading for brain damage rehab is this what his
    UK
fans want a human punching who eats powershot all night

  • rasict card says:

marcos rene maidana is the real warrior and im afraid the whole world agrees apart from khans loyal and long suffering fans

  • Anonymous says:

I would not say that but it was oh so close,I scored Maidana winning.his punches were harder after the 4th round.khans punches became flashy, but not as hard with leverage as Maidanas.khans head went away from its normal state often snapping back and sideways.

  • jhahahahahaha says:

    Khan definitely won

  • Bill says:

LOL…. A gumby is a rubber stretch doll, resembling a tall anonimous figure….
    Sorry Stu

  • stuart mcleod says:

Bill at least relationships are thawing lol and whats a gumby???

  • Bill says:

My British cousins. You have great boxers. I think Carl Froch is great. A legit, tough boxer. It seems this writer doesn’t like him so should I condemn the British population?
Joe Calzaghi total domination of his genre. Lennox Lewis, the best. The list goes on and on. Khan barely won the fight. When any fighter runs like he did, swaying to and fro like an elastic gumby and out on his feet towards the end of the fight people are going to dispute his win. Again, I think Khan won but when De La Hoya ran the fight was taken away from him. That’s all we’re saying, nothing pesonal, mate.
PS to the writer – you should pay more attention to Froch, he’s the real deal…..

  • stuart mcleod says:

I didn’t realise that boxing these days is all about slugging it out King. Mayweather is the most defensive boxer ever who ducks and dives yet he is worshipped by everyone. I don’t think Chris is trying to rip your country at all. Brits just like a good boxer and fight. Many Brits had reservations over Khan but surely you can see if you look at his last fights that he came out on top and proved he had heart and that is due to an American trainer. I think people on this site are just getting fed up with so much negativity when all we want to do is talk boxing and admire fighters. There are plenty of good American boxers but they just are not dominating all the weight classes anymore. Its not about getting into slanging matches. Maybe Khan is not ready to move on yet but everyone on here was saying he was going to get knocked out and he wasn’t fighting world class opositione and when he does he still can’t get it right. What would you like him to do. stand and sllug, get knocked out then get tell us “told you so”. As an ex boxer I wish I could move like him as I tell you what getting into a war is not fun for the bloke doing the job in the ring. I may be perverse and enjoy doing that but it does no good for my brain cells as my parents would tell you. Be happy and just enjoy some talent when you see it.

  • Oskie de hoya says:

THE FIGHT NEED A REMATCH. BOXING FANS ARE NOT CONVINCE OF KHAN PERFORMANCE.

HE WAS JUST RUNNING TO AVOID THE MAIDANA’S BOXING ABILITY. KHAN SHOULD SUBMIT TO REMATCH TO SHOW IF HE IS REALY READY FOR MAYWEEDER.

I THINK KHAN IS LOUSY FIGHTER, JUST EVEN WITH WITH FLOYD ” COWARD” BOTH OF THEM.

  • that negro says:

i say it like this khan won cuz he was the champion and u have to take the belt from the champ in which mandana but if u ask me if was a draw with out chapions involve so yea khan won due to cortez and mandana didnt take the belt clearly

  • carlos O says:

Look at the fight! many of Khon´s punches did not land. Khon should enter the NY marathon the way he ran all night…..Average boxer having dreams of been graet,…and talking rubbish…..

  • rasict card says:

khan didnt dominate the fight, he ran, he got battered in the 10th and maidana would have knocked his ar** out if it hadnt been for cortez.
so how can they say that, well, quite easily by the looks of things. champions dominate a fight, they dont run from it.
maidana came out of that fight a real hero and yet again deseprate khan who practically begs and grovels to be hero worshiped impresses his fans and thats it.

  • gmalt says:

Khan’s speed is un-rivalled apart from Pacquiao…to put Mandana down in the first round with an excruiating body-shot shows class. His speed, rapid-fire flurries shows class, his heart shows class…but ultimately his chin will let him down.

It’s not the fact he didn’t go to the canvas when hit with Mandan’s biggest shot; it’s the fact his whole body went into shock & he stumbled aroud the ring for 3 rounds like a war-shot veteran. oving up in weight is only gonna expose his chin to bigger hitters & that’s when he’ll get found out.

By the way; I’m a Brit & watch out for KELL BROOK & JAMES DE GALE…these boys are gonna be up there mixing it with the best, mark my words!

  • PAC STOP FIGHTING WHACK FIGHTERS says:

the ring had it at 115 – 110 which is bang on in my book

  • PAC STOP FIGHTING WHACK FIGHTERS says:

good article, americans have selective vision sometimes especially that judge who scored the fight 113 -112
