Haye says Chisora is at the mercy of Wladimir

By Sean McDaniel: World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion David Haye doesn’t see unbeaten fellow Brit Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) having much of a chance for a fight against IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in the future.

Klitschko recently pulled out of their scheduled bout due to an abdominal injury. Initially, it was thought that Wladimir had to still fight Chisora. But it’s now clear that Wladimir doesn’t have to fight Chisora and can move on to fight Haye if he so chooses.

In an article at the BBC Sport, Haye said “Unfortunately, [Chisora] signed one of these infamous Klitschko contracts they like to make their opponents sign which relieves them of all rights. He’s at their mercy, if they want to fight him they will, if they want me they’ll fight me – it’s up to them.”

Chisora may still get a shot against Wladimir in the future, but only if Chisora keeps winning and Wladimir runs out of appealing opponents. What makes Chisora a good option is his unbeaten record, his power and his ability to help sell his fights due to his gift for gab. Of Wladimir’s opponents in the past six years, Chisora stands out among them in getting interest for their fight.

It sucks for Chisora, but he knew all along he was a stay-busy fight.

As for Haye, does he even think for two seconds before he opens his mouth? He had a contract to fight both Klitschkos, and he ducked out of both contracts, so it’s a bit rich for him to complain about Wladimir getting out of a much less important fight. And he’d been calling out Wladimir constantly, so you’d think he’d be happy that Wladimir has cleared his schedule.

But that is assuming Haye actually wants to fight. David Haye has a record of calling out whichever Klitschko happens to be currently contracted for a fight with someone else. When Wladimir called him out, he said he wanted to fight Vitali. Vitali became available recently and called out Haye, who suddenly decided he’d prefer to fight Wladimir. Haye was probably unpleasantly surprised to hear that Wladimir is actually available for a fight, whenever and wherever.

Now what will you do, David Haye? Complain that 50/50 is an unfair offer to someone so fabulously awesome as yourself? Complain that Las Vegas is too far away from home? Run off to hide in Cyprus again? Or will you finally (finally!) be a man of your word and fight?

Wasn’t it reported that Klitschko has to fight Chisora within 180 days – what has happened to that? He’s the most interesting opponent K’s had for ages – a sort of Rocky situation and it had definitely got the interest of the public. Klitschko would have earned loads from it.

Chisora was not a top contender anyhow.
