Happy Birthday, Yuriorkis Gamboa!

International Boxing Federation and WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa turns 29 years old today (December 23rd). Promoter Ahmet Öner was in Miami to hand over his congratulations personally:

“Yuri can and should be proud of himself and of what he has achieved so far. Nobody should forget that he turned pro only three and a half years ago. Now he’s already unified world champion. In 2010 alone he fought three world title fights. Next year we are looking to get our hands on those other belts so Yuri can call himself undisputed champion in one of the strongest weight divisions at the moment.“

Does “El Ciclon“ have any specific wishes for birthday, Christmas or the New Year? “Obviously, I’m looking for big fights and big purses. The fight I want the most would be against Juan Manuel Lopez. This would be a hack of a fight and it would give me the chance to prove that I am the best featherweight boxer in the world today.“

Gamboa is expected to return in early March against an opponent to be announced. It will certainly not be Lopez though. Not yet…
