Did Golden Boy Promotions force Mosley’s hand?

By Tommaso Nappo: The worst kept secret in boxing is that Shane Mosley will be Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent probably on May 7, 2011. As a result of him getting the fight it has caused a split between Mosley and Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), with both sides claiming a lack of loyalty.
Oscar De la Hoya has said on record that Shane leaving and doing a fight with Top Rank was a slap in the face. C.E.O Richard Schaefer in an article by Dan Rafael stated that regarding Pacquiao’s next opponent ” Marquez is the logical choice”. Not too long ago Bernard Hopkins was having a similar issue with Golden Boy who was basically attempting to retire him or so it appeared from the outside. An interesting question to ponder is Golden Boy is now screaming for an immediate rematch with Jean Pascal. If Chad Dawson were a Golden Boy client, would they be looking out for Bernard’s best interest, an immediate rematch or their own( siding with the younger fighter with more upside left pushing Dawson’s contractual right to a rematch.) Neither Mosley nor Hopkins have a contract with Golden Boy but rather they own a percentage of the company. In the past they have fought under the GBP banner , but by leaving Mosley has not breached any contract. In actuality he still owns a piece of the company, and alluded to it in the LA Times article stating he received a cheque from Golden Boy for $1000 to cover his shares in the company. Mosley advised the writer that he has no plans on cashing the cheque and predicts another legal battle on the horizon.
Oscar should know as well as anyone styles make fights, and Mosley looked bad against Mora ( how many guys actually look good against him), and against possibly one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time Floyd Mayweather. Early in the fight he was able to hurt Floyd like nobody else has been able to. So a Mosley Pacquiao fight will not be a mismatch it will be exciting for the first 5-6 rounds as anything can happen. Shane won’t have to go looking or chasing Manny down he will be right in front of him Shane still has a punch and the question will be whether he gets to Pacquiao by the middle of the fight or he will be in trouble. More importantly GBP should have given Mosley the respect he deserved by pushing equally as hard for him to face Manny, or at the very least let Shane fight Juan Manuel Marquez for the opportunity
It is hard to understand the thinking behind GBP’s motivation behind pushing one client significantly more for an opportunity that a second client is in the running for as well. Nobody wants to be treated second class, and by GBP pushing Marquez and stating he is the only logical choice for Manny that is exactly what they have done. If they had played their cards right and presented both fighters equally they could have ended up with a fighter taking on Manny and another waiting in the wings. For example if Marquez had gotten the fight then Mosley could have fought either Berto to try and get a belt or Sergio Martinez for the middleweight title to try and entice Manny into collecting one more belt. If Shane had gotten the fight Marquez should move up and take on a welterweight (Berto if he is feeling ambitious) , or Clottey, Cotto . as a victory would shoot down any argument that Marquez can’t be successful as a welterweight making a fight with Pacquiao at 147 a reality. It will also give himself more leverage in negotiations especially if he had fought and defeated Berto.
Unless B-Hop lets Shane drink from his fountain of youth Mosley is nearing the end of the line.Taking this into account as well as realizing that GBP wasn’t negotiating with his best interest at heart , he did what he had to do. If Shane is able to pull of the huge upset I am sure Oscar will be telling the media that he had faith in Shane all along and he knew he would beat Manny and that was why he wanted JMM to fight Manny first. This whole matter served as a reminder to Shane that a true measure of your friends or associates that are to be trusted, can only be uncovered at one’s lowest points, and times of struggle – not in the good times !

pacman should noy be fighting any of those old beat up fighters cmon lets be real none of those two fighters can beat manny. he needs to fight someone younger who can give him a run for his money.mosley is to old he lost his quickness and marquez is way to small for pacman unless he takes some of the cream b.bonds took and mosley took.i think manny should fight both mosley n marquez the same night just to make it fair because other than that they both have no freakin chance and toprank n gbp know it.thas why i switch to MMA now thas a real sports not a freakin joke

Shane did what he needed to do to get Paquaio and one last payday. if he was still with GBP he would’ve been shoved aside for Marquez, talk about loyalty!
I respect shane hes a great fighter and has alot of heart but I think marquez deserved this fight more.He had two close fights with manny and looked good against Katidis.Now put Khan vs Marquez that will be a good fight.But Shane could pull off the upset.
No sense crying about it. The good thing is pacman fights twice a year so who knows what next fall will bring.
This wouldn’t have been my first choice for pacman. However I’m starting to think pacman, roach, arum are chasing pbf’s previous fighters to show him and the world that he can dominate him.
I really wish that pbf didn’t have a brain like a 4 year old and realized what kind of historical match up that would be with pacman. We all know pacman wants pbf with the (exception of the 70-80 fanatical pbf fans on this site)
However, this is what we Are left with. Mosley is gonna get it and I hope not to bad. Pbf made him look bad but so did mora and cotto. The difference between pbf and pacquiao will be very obvious come fight night. Mosley isn’t getting in there with a guy who pity pats. He’s going to get dropped very bad.

If anyone is baking up bob arum, you need really dont know Sh** about boxing and really dont care to improve it!!!!! There is a big defference between cut and conditioned, Mayweather was conditioned, far from cut! He was not as dense as Mosley, Mosley was clearly bigger. Floyd is genetically gifted structurally, so it creates an illusion of being bigger than he really is.

GBP and Oscar are making themselves look stupid in my opinion. They go on to say that Marquez is the logical choice, and even offer to step aside and let Top Rank be the promoter because Bob doesn’t like to work with GBP. So I don’t get how they will offer to step aside to get a fight done with Marquez, but would call Shane Mosley disloyal for basically doing what GBP offered to do with Marquez. Mosley just did it on his own.
Good for Mosley. He’s coming to the end of his career. He needs the money. I just hope that he has the capacity to spend it and enjoy it after the fight.

I use to get exicited about fights but now in days promoters are more interested in what fight makes more money rather than putting their fighters at risk with top level fighters. Boxing is going to die sooner than I thought.

Who says Shane looked smaller than Mauweather? Look again when the met in the center of the ring at the beginning of the fight. Mayweather creates the illusion of looking bigger from the front because he has round shoulders and full muscle bellies, which creates an illusion of looking bigger. But if you look at Mosley from the side he was thicker than Mayweather. True thickness can be seen from the side. It’s a bodybuilding thing, Shane’s muscle was also a lot more dense than Mayweather’s who appeared more watery.

It is official, Pac hand-picked a fighter who hasn’t won in 2 years! Arum and Manny let us know the “warrior” Manny chose this opponent. Kudos to Manny for continuing to fight the best of the best! We love you Manny, you so brave!

I simply mentioned that Pac has only fought opponents who have looked horrendous. My goodness, if he wants to show up Floyd by beating someone Floyd practically shut-out and has proven he is done as a fighter why not go after Judah next? Or Genaro Hernandez? Heck, Judah might be better than Mosley is at this point in time. To show someone up, one would need to fight someone that actually gave the other fighter a fight (like JMM did to Pac). Which only one fighter has done against floyd. but this isn’t about Floyd at all, its about Pac continuing to scavage like a vulture on the dead. Floyd is not anywhere on the p4p list now, because he is not boxing now. I know people want him to sign a fight now that he has a trial in January. Who knows what will happen with that, the accuser made similar allegations against Floyd before then admitted in court that she lied, but if he gets convicted of any felony charges Floyd’s career may very well be over. So, i guess Pac is trying to show up Mora now? Pac chose Mosley, not Arum, not Roach. The same PAc that insisted he fights for the fans, not the money. Wouldn’t it show Floyd up more to beat a prime, A-level fighter than a washed-up has been? shane is an above average fight who found steroids….against mayweather he looked smaller and less muscular…at least we have to give floyd credit for insisiting on testing shane—and it won the fight for him before he ever got in the ring. but lets face it, mayweather picked up because he always loses to movers. even an average mover beat shane in the next fight. when cotto moved around the ring late in the fight, and hes not great at it, he made shane look clumsy. but when he stood in the pocket, shane looked great (of course shane was strangely far more muscular for that fight).
what are you smoking lex? this is unlike the mayweather, who has been cherry picking for years? the other possibility is pacman fights these guys is to show he can do better against the same fighters mayweather has fought and try to shame him into getting into the ring. why do mayweather fans try to protect him by attacking pacman. this is boxing, lex, not a girl’s sewing circle, we prove ourselves in the ring, not by lying and gossiping behind their backs. so mayweather either needs to fight or retire. pacman is now number 1, not mayweather…to get it back he has to beat pacman in the ring. and gossip isnt going to get it done.

LOL, Mosley pulling a Floyd on Oscar, the same way Floyd pulled it on Arum. But hey, if it works for Shane, then more power to him. Everyone knows his hand is being forced by his gold digger ex-wife’s divorce settlement. GBP needs to just forget it and move on, it is what it is. They have some good potential match-ups of their own for 2011.

Looks like I was right! All these Pactards dismissed this as impossible that the brave Manny that proudly claimed he fights for the fans, not the money, would never stoop this low. And still it took another horrible outing by Sugar to convince Manny that this was a safe enough fight! Remember too, that Arum and Top Rank made it clear that Manny picked this opponent! lmao What a joke, Pac has many great names on his resume but look where they were all at when he fought them! Morales II and III were the same as this Mosley fight. So was Barrera II, Cotto, Hatton, ODLH, and Margarito! And Clottey and Diaz were both bums to begin with! Its all good, Roach and Arum will claim Pac is not focused and looks terrible in training camp and point to Mosley doing what Pac couldn’t do- KO Margacheato, and the fact that the Margarito bout was Mosley’s last win and was practically 2 and half years ago will not be mentioned, so the PPV numbers will still be good. Not as good as a fight with JMM or even Berto if promoted right, but both JMM and Berto pose a risk to Manny. Pac would probably beat both of them now, but that risk is too much for Pac. You all know, Manny Pacquiao, the courageous warrior that fights for the fans not the dough!
Shane is obviously going after the biggest fight he can get keeping in mind his skills are rapidly diminishing. DLH thinks Mosley should run whatever play he calls. When a fighter is at the end of his career, searching for the biggest fight he can get, it’s not about loyalty. Every sportsman today knows it’s all about business. Mosley, of course will lose badly anyway, but he’s doing what he has to do.

Obviously it is not 2008, because in 2008 Mosley was ranked #1 at WW and #3 p4p and literally went to Pac’s gym on more than one occassion to literally BEG for a fight with Manny. Than Roach said Mosley was too good and WOULD NOT GENERATE ENOUGH MONEY. Than Clottey and Margarito who had such huge fan bases got fights with Pac. So, yes now that Mosley is looking better than he did in 2008 (which it was January of that year that he had his last win- yes it will have been nearly two and a half years since Mosley won a boxing match by the time he fights Manny) and now Sugar Shane has amassed a huge fanbase with his stellar performances since he went begging and Roach turned him down.

How much is Arum paying Mosley? I am sure it’s penies. They had no one to fight. Mosley had leverage and GBP had the other fighter (JMM) that Pacquiao could have fought. Mosley turned his back on the hand the feed him.
Arum is so good he made everybody believe Oscar was as good a Sugar Ray Leonard. In reality Sugar Ray Leonard was ten times better than Oscar.

Because “the shiek” Bob Arum does not negotiate with GBP anymore. He pays pennies to opponents that are not with Top Rank. Mosley is dumb. Pacquiao had no one to fight, so GBP would have negotiated better for Mosley and used JMM as leverage. Either way JMM wasn’t getting the fight.

Just go back to the failed promotional efforts that Bob Arum had with Goldden Boy Promotions which turned around and said, there was never an effort to promote a fight betwen Pac and Weeder. Good for Shane Mosely. Might as well take care of himself first. He deserves a one last big payday which he really never had during his heydays!

I’m sorry but as soon as the Margarito bout was over, wasn’t Mosley yelling how he was no longer with Golden Boy and on his own??? This was BEFORE GBP made a push for JMM. I guess Mosley can’t understand why GBP would want a better fight that they would actually get money for too, instead of a shot fighter getting a big payday and GBP getting nothing. He left GBP and than can’t figure out why the company he had already left didn’t push for him to get the fight??? Someone should honestly evaluate Sugar Shane to see how much brain damage he has already suffered and if it is even semi-safe for him to get in the ring with anyone, let alone Pac. It really is a shame that Mosley has been reduced to a stuttering, nonsensical, punching bag.
