Will Khan reign again after December 11th?
By Dallan o’ Donnell: Amir Khan (23-1, 17 Kos) faces the toughest test in his boxing career to date when he squares off against hard hitting Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 Kos). This will be only the second time that Khan has fought in America and his first fight in Las Vegas. Many Boxing analysts see this as an acid test on how far Khan has come, training under Freddie Roach and alongside Manny Pacquaio. Roach has dramatically improved Khans leaky defence and his explosive hand speed and power makes him an intriguing fighter to behold.
Khan will try and box his way to retaining his WBA light welterweight title and if he gets half a chance he will end Maidana’s night early although Maidana usually has many early nights when he fights. It would certainly be a shock if Maidana was to pull off a win especially with Khan under the guidance of Roach. But being away from England will Khan have the same traveling support as one of the most popular British fighters of all time Ricky Hatton? Hatton had an army of supporters with him and if Khan has half of that kind of support he would be doing well.
If Khan does win and it does seem likely that he will, will he fight Timothy Bradley? Or will he keep up his pursuit of Floyd Mayweather Jr? It promises to be a busy year for Khan if he does win but if he loses to Maidana it could be a crisis his career may not survive. But I will stick my neck on the line and say although Maidana is a talent Khan will be too much for him to handle and it could be over in 5 rounds. And Khan will still reign as WBA champion.

PETE with due respect if you honestly believe a prime Barrera could not have handled khan and his hand speed you realy do need to remove the bag from your head because it is seriously imparing your vission If you ever witnessed Barrera morralis fights you will instantly know either of these two legends would have dismantled amir khan big time
i think freddy Roach knows something we dont in the upcoming fight,or at least thinks he knows. But I like unifying titles and credit goes to both.
This fight could end a KO somewhere after the 6th rould, maybe 8-10th. If Khan can do it, he may be satisfied for an overwhelming UD.
@David- the guy who said it felt like kicks to the head is an old retired featherweight called kevin kelly! Yeah that’s right the Kelly that naz took it in 4 back in 97!!
I can see khan winning by TKO in late rounds may be 8th or 9th
Wow khan to win in 5? That’s a big statement to make. I think a stoppage in favour of khan from round 9 onwards. Or a UD.
All that has to be said is watch maidana knockout videos on youtube. A sparring partner guy said that when maidana punches it feels like kicks to he head. So well see hope its an explosive fight! But my money on maidana!
Maidana is a better fighter than people give him credit for. Imo he its no.3 in the division. This fight will have no middle ground. Either Khan will look like magic and annihilate Maidana or get ko’ed. In that sense it probably will define where his career goes. I see Khan’s piston like punching being too much for Maidana and expect a mid fight tko.
Maidana is gonna have his chin broken, don’t beleive it? Watch the fight, put money on it.
Khan to win by tko
i see khan totally outclassing maidana and frustrating him leaving him open to a 7th round knockout
Very even fight.
khan chin is weak.. maidana hits like a mule. expect to see khan on the floor in 9th round.
This fight is an oddsmakers head scratcher.
In the last years, Argentina has produced a number of EXTREMELY hard-hitters like Maidana (similar in style, too) and we know by experience what kind of boxers could beat them and who is likely to crumble.
-Juan Roldán could not be Middleweight champion, but in his prime his only losses were his title bouts against Hagler (although “Marvelous” suffered a knock down) and Hearns, who was almost KO’d, wobbling like a flag, but even groggy could react and KO Roldán with one of his devastating punches.
-Julio César Vasquez was Jr. Middleweight world champion. He lost by points to Pernell Whitaker, whose stellar defense doesn’t help him to avoid a knock down.
-Jorge Castro was Middleweight world champion. He lost by points to Terry Norris.
I would say that Khan doesn’t have Hearn’s power, Whitaker defense or the abilities of Hagler and Norris.
Maidana hits harder than Vasquez or Castro, but the main difference with all three is that he hits extremely hard with both hands. Also he cuts off the ring better.
I have to say objectively that I can not see Khan surviving this fight. We will discuss again after December 11th.
Khan will do this, Maidana will do that… just watch the fight you bunch of whingers.
@rascist card – erm what makes you think cayo is a tough fight? No1 heard of the guy before maidana beat him.
why will it be a shock if maidana wins.
look at their records, khans been knocked out before, maidana’s never been stopped. khan doesnt ko opponents. maidana does.
khan has been knocked down and some think out by feather weights.
khan has avoided tough fights like ortiz and cayo and opted for malignaggi and his 5 ko’s instead.
so why would it be a massive suprise if khan loses. because there is far too much hype surrounding amir khan thats why. maidana hasnt got alot of hype considering his record is clearly better than khans, he beat kotelnik, the belt belongs to him and he’s going to take it. it’s not going to be a shock to see khan with bambi legs and flattened on the canvas, we’ve seen it all before. nothing to do with his trainer, he has a weak chin.
Khans next three fights
1. Maidana
2. Bradley/Alexander
3. Move up division to fight mayweather
This fight has repercussions beyond itself. Mark my words but if there is anyone in this division that can beat khan its Maidana. Khan will box circles around the over hyped asses of Bradley and Alexandor. Its his chin thats the main question and Maidana has what it takes to tap it. If, and its a BIG “if” Khan gets past Maidana there will be no stopping him in this division.
And yea, Floyd Jr will toy with Khan for 3 or 4 rounds before KO’ing him in the 5th. Better not go there, yet.
cant see maidana winning this one , khan is like a ghost
Stop blocking my posts, you FASCIST ARSEWIPES!
kahn would not beat yuri romanov. Kahn has excellent speed but does not have cocncusssive punching power
kahn is an excellent boxer when facing a powder puff puncher – so far he has been wrapped up in cotton wool
@BNB
“Khan became a champ without facing anybody good”?
Kotelnik beat Maidana and outboxed Alexander. He’s been the champ for 2 years. Good enough for any challenger. It’s just that he wasn’t well known but neither are many world champions nowadays. How many of you can name the world champions of the featherweight division from the top of your head?
good article but Chino will KO Khan due to lack of heart.
Look what Froch did to Abraham a hard puncher, Khan is faster than Froch do your maths!!
You must be crazy to compare Khan to Barrera. Simply put Barrera was not even giving a change with that head butt, Barrera is a future hall of famer- Khan has not even proven himself yet.
If (when) Khan knocks Maidana out his record will be very good. His last five fights are all against quality fighters and he will be 5-0 (4 KO).
Barrera – Past his best but would never have coped with that speed in his prime.
Kotelnik – Completely outboxed him and won a world title.
Salita – His unbeaten mandatory and it took him all of 10 seconds.
Malignaggi – Outboxed the boxer and beat him to the punch everytime.
Maidana – ????????
I have a feeling that Maidana is not going to last too long.
Khan is not reiging king of the jr welter division.
Names ahead of Khan;
Bradley
Alexander
Maidana
Khan…and his bootleg belt.
He is the worst of all the champ. And became champ without facing anybody good.
God ..!!!! How lucky Khan is to have “connections” in high places.
Khan will ko maidana and then win against bradley and prove he is the real deal
