Roach wants Pacquiao to face Marquez but at 147

By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach wants Manny Pacquiao to finally give Juan Manuel Marquez a rematch, but instead of the fight taking place at 135 to 140, which would make it a winnable fight for Marquez, Roach wants the fight to take place at 147. In other words, he wants Pacquiao to have a huge advantage over Marquez. Roach no doubt saw how badly Marquez performed when he bulked up to 143 last year in his catch-weight fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., and likes Pacquiao’s chances at fighting Marquez at an even higher weight of 147 pounds. Marquez will likely still take the fight, but it’s hardly fair. Roach must feel that Pacquiao needs the weight advantage for him to win. Why else would Roach have Pacquiao fight at the full 147 instead of using one of his handicaps?
Marquez lost a controversial 12 round split decision to Pacquiao in 2008 in a fight that many boxing fans, this writer included, felt that Marquez should have won. The judges gave the more popular fighter Pacquiao the decision despite the fact that Pacquiao was getting out-boxed for much of the fight and was even staggered at one point in the fight. Instead of giving Marquez a rematch, Pacquiao went on to fight David Diaz next for to win a paper title at lightweight.
Roach likes to maximize the advantages for his fighters, and catch-weight bouts are part of how he helps Pacquiao get an advantage. But by having Marquez fight at 147, it shows that Roach is still trying to get an edge to have Pacquiao in a better position to win. It’s disappointing to say the least, because Marquez has a small build and he looked slow at 143 last year. He’s just not make to carry that kind of weight as well as Pacquiao. This is why it seems unfair that Roach wants Pacquiao to fight Marquez at a higher weight than 143. It just tells me that Roach isn’t confident about Pacquiao’s chances to win unless he receives an advantage over Marquez.

I agree Pacquiao would beat Marquez at 147. This fight really doesnt make sence anymore expecially at this weight. It does make you wonder though if Paquiao in the past was afraid to fight Marquez for the third time. I only say that because the fight could have been easily made in the past when he still wasnt a legit 147. As far as the second fight goes, cmon guys just give it up to Marquez he won the fight fair and square. Just look at the stats, he landed more punches, power punches, threw more punches, beat him in everything. Sure all the Marquez haters will say he got knocked down but seriously who hasnt knocked down marquez? All I know is Mayweather would whoop Pacquiao and make him look retarted. Juan Marquez likes to make a fool of himself and really the guy has no business fighting in the welterweight, he is a sitting duck. Any decent welterweight fighter will beat easily like Bradley, Alexander, Khan just to name a few.
I just loved it when i see articles about Marquez whining about how Pacquiao is ducking because he’s the only one that gave Manny troubles in the ring. Juan must be obsessed with Manny. Juan Marquez will go down in history as probably the greatest P4P fighter from Mexico and also the biggest whiner for his pathetic claims every time he’s interview that he beat Pacquiao twice. I agree that those 2 fights could’ve gone his way but the fact of the matter is he kissed that canvas many times against Manny and that decided the fight. Chris, this article is nonsense. Should fight be at 147, it doesn’t mean the fighters should weigh 147 at weighing day. Both fighters can come at their choice best weights as long as they are at 147 and below. Pacman can come at 144 and JMM can choose his best weight at 140 or even lower. Come fight night, Pacman can come at 147 (his weight at the Margarito fight) and JMM can come at 140, or if he may at 144 (the weight he agreed to in fighting Floyd)that is if he wants to be clobbered again.

I’m not surprized, every Pacquiao fight is calulated to his advantange. If the guy is bigger, Arum and Roach always insist on a catch-weight fight to weaken Pacquiao’s opponent. In this case, they know that Marquez will not perform well above 142 so they are now deviating from their usual strategy and insisting on the welterweight limit of 147. I would be an eight-time champion also if all of my fights were pre-arranged to my advantange. Let them fight at 142 and let’s see what happens.
I think this is the fight for Pacman! He never really “clearly” beat Marquez and he is his best opponent. Mayweather will definitely end Pac’s career and from a business point of view if he wants more than two fights before he retires this is where Pac and Arum should look. I for one would definitely buy this fight and I know plenty more fans that would as well. Mayweather vs Pacman is definitely the money ticket but what will he have after that?

Sorry boxing fans, but you’ve just witnessed the last fight Manny will ever fight. There is no point in fighting JMM, 1 is it will not generate enough money, 2nd Manny has decided to fight in a different ring, which is a public servant in politics. The only way we will ever see Manny fight again is to fight Mayweather, which at this point an agreement between Golden Boy and Top Rank have been made for the superfight. Contracts are set and signed and that contract is now sitting on Mayweathers coffee table being used as a coaster. All he has to do is sign and the fight is on…..I think he rolls up the contract like a newspaper and beats his wife with it.

In the history of boxing the bigger star always calls the shots. Leonard did it against Hagler and he did it when he beat Donnie Lalonde for his Lt Heavy Crown and the vacant newly created Super Middle title at the same time. And guess what was the contracted weight? Lalonde a natural Lt Heavy could not exceed 167.
Was that fair? Absolutely not! Ali chose the ring size, the location and everything else. In his return last year Floyd Willnever made Marquez come up 2 classes and he was supposed to come in at around 144, a very small compromise. But what did he do? He agreed to pay the fine and came in at 146 as he said he could not get that low.
I have no idea if he could not get down but the point is as the major star he called the shots and then bent them for his advantage. I would have respected him if he had said from the beginning that he could not make 144 rater than what he did. I repeat he was the star and Marquez accepted.
Manny is the man now and Marquez wants him really badly. Why should Manny go back to lightweight when he has built up to a higher weight to face the big guns and make more money? JMM does not generate huge interest. If he wants Manny it will be at Manny’s terms.
I am a fair man and would love to see Manny agree to the same weight he was vs Margarito but refuse to go back to 135. If Roach and Manny can get a chance to fight and beat Mayweather, than why should they even bother thinking about Marquez? I like Marquez. He’s one of my favorite boxers, but the bottom line is that he lost to two of the best P4P fighters in the world. KO or no KO, a win is a win. The Manny fights were close, but look at it this way… Marquez almost won, but he didn’t outshine Manny either, otherwise there would have been no speculation as to whether he can beat him in a rematch.

There will always be those who hate catch weight fights. It’s like debating politics or religion when it comes to that. We all have our personal views on the topic. That being said some things can be contradictions… For or against a specific fighter.
If you complain that Manny asks people to come down in weight how can you then complain that he won’t go down in weight? This doesn’t make sense.
When you talk about a fighters personality then it’s mainly subjective to your preference or views. However, noboda can deny that Manny is the most humble boxer to grace the ring. And for anyone wanting to fight him or offered the chance will probably take up the offer. Manny is a world figure and anyone who goes up against him is going to get a bigger viewing crowd & more money then fighting most other fighters (obviously maywether and others are exceptions). People are so freaking annoying trying to compare the mayweather vs. marquez fight to the manny vs. margarito fight. First off, margarito is a power puncher but he is very very slow. Therefore manny was able to beat him as manny is a lot faster. Margarito was more hurt by the volume of manny’s punches than by the actual strength of them. If not look at morales vs. pacquiao 1 and you will see how pacquio looked after absorbing the volume of punches thrown at him. Mayweather is no slow chump and with the weight advantage of course he was going to beat marquez. On the other hand margarito was so slow he never really had a chance unless he was able to hit manny like he did in the 6th round. So why doesn’t marquez fight manny at their current weights? A better question is why is manny scared to go down in weight? Is he afraid he can’t handle the speed of a lower weight bout? don’t get me wrong manny is a great figther but he does seem to be picking his fights.

147 is the maximum weight for the fight. Both fighters can weigh less than 147 but not more. Marquez can stay at 140 if he wants to during the fight if the pac haters think it is advantageous for Marquez to keep his speed at this weight. It’s basically 7 lbs difference if Pacquiao would stay at 147 which is very unlikely. Pacquiao would probably stay at 145 to keep his speed. 5 lbs is negligible as we can see what Pacquiao did to Maragarito with 17 lbs advantage. Marquez is 38 years old and will probabaly be retired for good by Pacquiao at this time.

147 is the most comfortable weight Pac is fighting at. He came from a much lighter weight and climb to a heavier class just to find worthy opponents. From what i heard, one of the reasons why Pac and JMM 3 hasn’t happened is because Pac isn’t willing to go down to lighter weights anymore. He is just not happy starving himself and doing crazy training just to reach that lower weight class. If JMM really wants to fight Pac, sign to the limit that Roach wants him to be and he has the option of coming in lighter like what Pac did on the Margarito fight.

The author does know that Marquez does not have to weigh 147 to fight a 147 fight right? If he comes in at 140 the fight will still happen. At fight night Pacquiao would probably be 147-148 and Marquez at 140…if you know what it’s like to cut weight you would know that this actually helps Marquez to not have to drain to 135…Marquez walks around at 140+ anyway. just accept it. you hate the fact the world knows Pacquiao will destroy your scared god mayweather…

Why would Manny want to move down as low as 142 to fight Marquez. Manny doesn’t need Marquez, Manny is the best P4P fighter right now. If they do fight I think they should fight at a catch weight of 145, Marquez should be lucky if Manny giving him the fight.

Roach knows Marquez looked terrible at 143 but still looks great at 135 that’s why he’ll never let Manny fight him at a weight Marquez is comfortable with. If they fought at 147 Manny would destroy him but at 135-140 he knows Marquez would have a great chance. Roach knows exactly what he’s doing and he also knows Marquez has the beating of Manny and that Manny should have lost the 2nd fight and would have lost the first had it not been for all the knockdowns in round 1. This is the thing with Roach, he’ll never let his prize assets fight when they have a 50/50 chance of winning or losing they always have to have some sort of advantage.

i think besides Floyd this is the only other lingering question for Pac that wasn’t a clear win so i think if Manny wants to be GOAT and maybe wait for Floyd he has to erase any doubt with Marquez

i would disagree with you. I think Pacs NATURAL weight is at 140. but Pac has all the right to fight at 147.
Boxing is a business, and part of it is tipping the scales in your favor. There is no way Manny can get to 135. Either way JMM won’t care and he will take the last big pay check of his career.
BTW JMM still has business to take care of, so it is just talk.

pacquiao has never lost to marqures and at this point with marqures 38 almost it seems pointless for this fight to take place . no matter what weight the fight at pacman would be to much and defeat JJM again…3years ago it was an even pick fight now its not pacquiao has become a complete fighter… JJM will suffer again only worse this time at the hands of pacquiao.

Chris Williams fails to realize JMM can just weigh whatever wants the way Pacquiao did against Margarito. Instead he bashes Roach for wanting his own fighter to fight at his best weight. How ridiculous. Last time I checked Manny won the last fight. Why should he do Marquez any favors?
Don’t do it marquez! 142 was too much weight difference, don’t fight at 147.

Interestring article Chris. I agree with your observation that Roach’s idea to fight in 147 will give Pacquiao a huge advantage. But remember that Pacman already had a problem reaching 135 so fight in 140 is fair. If they fight in 147 I cant really blame the Pacquiao camp for insisiting in 147 simply because Pac will not fight anyone lower than 147 anymore. I agree that this fight needs to happen as Pacquiao fan, I need to see closure on who is better between the two.
If so make it 140 to sell the fight. Or At least 142lbs.
