Martinez-Williams II: Can Paul and Sergio make another classic?

By Peter Wells: As the old saying goes; “Good things come to those who wait”. For Paul Williams it hasn’t worked out that way yet. Now at 29 he’s moved from Welterweight to Middleweight in search of that career defining fight, how long can a man wait for his destiny. Maybe he just hasn’t waited long enough yet but with both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather announcing they won’t be around much longer it’s hard to keep the faith. “The Punisher” doesn’t want to go down the path of not ever getting his name lodged in everyone’s head, even when he has proved to be fan friendly, a quality fighter and boxer and a down to earth guy who just wants to prove how good he is.

For hardcore boxing fans around the world Paul Williams is one fighter you wouldn’t miss fight. Especially against Sergio Martinez after there classic last year. After 12 brutal rounds and 1 knockdown apiece. Williams came out with the victory via majority decision which was disputed by some, but it could have gone either way in all fairness.

For the first fight both fighters had 3 weeks to train for each other after Kelly Pavlik pulled out of a fight with Williams. Sergio denied that he was already preparing for Williams as he believed Pavlik would pull out. Well one thing is for sure he wouldn’t have been the only one to predict such an obvious outcome.

Sergio has by far had the better time since the classic war, getting himself a shot at Kelly Pavlik’s WBC and WBO Middleweight crowns. Martinez was victorious as many believed Williams would do. Williams has carried on being avoided except by Kermit Cintron until he threw himself out the ring in the 4th. The result was a controversial technical decision.

Williams insists he’ll be better this time around, and so does Sergio. Last time Williams struggled with an opponent was when he lost to Carlos Quintana, the rematch didn’t even last a round so we can ultimately forget the first encounter.

Martinez is much better than Quintana and at a catch weight of 158lbs will be much stronger. I don’t believe it will be as good as the first but it’ll still be one to remember with Williams winning more convincingly this time around.

  • MoneyPack says:

Definitiely the “Knock out of the Year” as well as “Fight of the Year”. It was almost like Pac-Hatton KO.

  • Fighter says:

    I meant Paquiao/Mosley, not Pac/May

This fight is happening in a few hours and there is only a handful of comments for this fight.

A CLASSIC FIGHT in the making????

  • Everlast says:

I guess there is no problem for this title fight being fought at a CATCHWEIGHT. So with the other ten or more CATCHWEIGHT title fights that happened before.

IT IS ONLY WHEN IT HAPPENS TO BE PAC that PAC Haters will howler that it was not a legitimate title fight.

Martinez is a beast, but PW wins by late round stoppage or UD.

@ for realz. Cmon fool, after what cintron did in the last fight.cintron is a joke,he don’t deserve no rematch. Cintron ain’t no warrior

This fight is about to be another classic. The same as The four horsemen, are these two. Hats off to them. Maybe others in the sport will follow suit, and man-up.
Williams excells at basics. His foot placement is good, but against another southpaw, that’s negated. He has the same tenacity Margarito did before he was shot, but obviously more skilled, as he won a lopsided victory. He uses economy of motion, to maximize punch output. He understands angles well.

Martinez is a machine as well. He is very educated, and thus avoided in the sport. I thought Williams won the last fight. Not by the 119-110 that the drunkard scored, but 2 round advantage is more like it, and the compubox proved it.

Martinez is nothing to play with, and I’ll support both guys in the future, but as for this fight, I see Paul more focused this time, just like Quintana. Martinez better strap up, and be ready, cause the PUN is a beast. Hopefully, Paul will take this fight more seriously.

I lost respect for paul for not giving cintron a rematch.

Sergio will win this time around, he looks much better than before and more determined.

  • elcondor says:

Sergio will win this one! Too bad he didn’t hit PW hard enough last time. This time around, he should make sure to send Paul to the canvass…to stay there.

  • smokey says:

Floyd said he’ll fight the winner worst there’s cotto a rematch with Margarito, drop to 147 fight all the good fighters there fight the best 140 fighters i.e. khan, bradley, ortiz, alexander, maidana once they move to 147 (for Martinez) as for willams he got a tommy hearns like body so he could just move up in weight where there are definite fights for him froch, abraham, dirrel, ward, he could even move up to 175 and the best there

  • TomCribb says:

For me, Martinez and Williams should keep fighting each other over and over. They are both at about the same level, not bad but not great, got ahead by being southpaws and awkward to fight. Neither will excel much further.
