Martinez wants to challenge Pacquiao for his WBC paper title

By Dave Lahr: Well, here’s Manny Pacquiao’s big chance that he can beat a top fighter that’s in the prime of his career and not on the downward slide like many of his recent opponents in the past two years. Former WBC junior middleweight and current World Boxing Council middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KO’s) is willing me to come down to 154 to challenge for Pacquiao’s newly won WBC title. Martinez, 5’10″, is actually smaller than Pacquiao’s recent win over 5’11″ Antonio Margarito, so there can’t be any arguments about Martinez being too big for Pacquiao.
Martinez says “If Manny’s willing to defend his WBC super welterweight title, I would come down to 154 pounds to challenge him for it as well as allow him to challenge me for my WBC middleweight title. It would be the opportunity of a lifetime. But I’m a realist and if he feels that he is physically too small to fight me, I certainly understand that too.”
I don’t think it’s Pacquiao being too small. I think it’s more of a case of Martinez being too skilled. He’s a counter puncher and he moves well around the ring. Pacquiao is generally always matched against slow plodders, fighters that stand directly in front of him and make it easy for him. The last time Pacquiao was put in with a fighter with good skills in Juan Manuel Marquez, he went life and death with him and won by what many people saw as a gift decision. Since then. Pacquiao hasn’t come near to fighting Marquez again and still isn’t interested in fighting him again.

To : Mexicutioner, Pacquiao is lucky to fight MEXICANS because they make him look good. It’s not because there are MEXICANS it’s the fighting style. They like to just come forword stright no foot work and head movement. PACQUIAO has the best foot work and movement of his head. I’m a Mexican amuture fighter, there are learning the foot work but go back to the old style of going forword. PACQUIAO use the whole ring in the MARGARITO fight so he had a hard time cutting off PACQUIAO to the ropes because MARGARITO had no foot work. So if PACQUIAO faced some one with good foot work and good head movement it will be a tough fight for PACQUIAO…..
@ Boxingdude. In regards to Martinez, The Willams fight (the first one) was at best a draw but really should have went to Sergio and the Cintron fight was a straight robbery. I never saw anything like that. He knocked Cintron out and somehow his corner argued that it was a headbutt and the fight continued. Robbery!
Manny might take the fight but I doubt it. At the most Manny is a jr welterweight and Sergio is too good and too big. But I don’t think Manny would back down. Floyd on the other hand is big enough to challenge at middleweight. He’s no smaller than Martinez than Marquez was to him so I thinl it can be done. Sergio should call out Chavez if he can’t get Manny or Floyd

Martinez is a class act in and out of the ring. I have spent time training with his camp. Manny is just great as well. I would hope that Sergio would maintain his ground and not fight unless it was at 154. Manny can stay at sub 150 and keep busy. In the end though, the truth is only in the ring on fight night.

The only reason Martinez would drop weight for Floyd or Manny is for money. His chances of winning would go down considerably to fight at WW or a LMW catchweight.
Sergio is a legitimate middleweight, and comfortable there. He fought Pavlik and PW I at 159.
Why couldn’t he find Ward at 166? Is SMW too much to ask? There is a lot of talent there for Martinez.
He’s 35, has had a long career, he’s rising to national acclaim late in his career, but has not had serious competition until Cintron last February.
He fought a guy Madalin at the end of ’07 who had a record of 3 wins, 34 losses.
I’m just saying, he could probably do well against Floyd and Manny, I don’t think he could win. He could, however, beef up his already solid, strong frame and go after some of the talent at SMW.
He could probably even get some of the SMW’s to come down to MW and get it on.

hey you are not up to date before the margarito-pacquiao fight happened. Margarito and garcia even utter that so far he (margarito) was in good shape and it was his best preparation compared to his previous fight so that clearly means that margarito is not weight drained. About martinez? why would pacquiao challenge that guy! just to prove he (pacman) is the best? there’s no need for pacman to prove that he is the best! it is rather right and fair to say that all challengers out there must go below and beyond their weight to challenge pacman at 147lb in order for them to cement their own legacy. Requirements to Satisfy Manny’s critics:
1. Manny should drastically gain weight to loose his speed so that he won’t have his best weapon in his arsenal.
2. If you’re fighting Mayweather you need to undergo Olympic style Blood Test days prior to the bout (even if no one in history has undergone such).
3. If you’re fighting Marquez, you’re required to go back from jr middleweight to lightweight because apparently it would be unfair for JMM to increase weight but its ok for you to chop some.
4. Manny should try to be more choosy on your next opponent cause people love choosy fighter.
5. You need to be more fluent in English cause trash talk is part of Boxing now and Humility just doesn’t sell anymore.
6. You should be below 30 years old, or else you’ll be deemed past your prime.
7. You shouldn’t have any tarnish on your resume that can be criticized.
8. You should have power, hand speed, counter-punching ability, durability and the ability to box like a technician and also then go into the trenches and put up a ferocious fight. If you’re missing one of these, you’re just not good enough.
God I wish there’s a fighter who passes it in this era to shut the F**K everyone up. But the truth is, there isn’t at the moment, and the one close enough is MIA.

First which title are you referring to, the paper title at 154 lb. Junior Welterweight or his 147 lb. Welterweight belt? He’s not backing out on Martinez at 147 lb. You guys did not have a problem when the fight against Margarito was announced because you all knew that that was going to be an easy fight fo Manny. None of you guys complained about Magarito’s size or his height……but it was all about how exciting that fight would be because Margarito threw over 1600 punches against Joshua Clottey, and Pac would be fighting a “real” welterweight. An “old” Shane Mosley had already beat the hell out of Margarito, but you Pac fans still saw that fight as a fight to cement Pac’s leagcy. Now all of a sudden when Pac gets called out by a live dog who hasnt been Ko’ed or by someone who hasnt beeen looking past their prime, you guys have a problem. And that is the problem, for all of the good that Pac has accomplished in boxing, he actually isnt proving anything more by beating the same caliber of fighter every night. We know that Pac is very good at beating fighters that stand in front of him all night…….we know that Pac is very good at beating fighters who were considered to be great long before they stepped into the ring with Pac…..we know that Pac is very fast with his hands and has some very good power in his punches….but can Pac really hang with and beat the best in the divisions that he fights in……..come to think of it when has the last time that Pac fought the number one ranked opponent in the divisions that he has fought in? So that brings us to Martinez, who isnt coming off of a recent devestating loss, he isnt trying to find himself at this point in his career, and he actually would come into the ring coming off one of his most impressive wins to date, and when was the last time that anybody could say that about Pacs recent string of opponents? The only thingg that Pac has been doing lately is actually bullying older fighters that just cant compete with him, and he has taken advantage of his “smaller” size to make it appear that he is doing something “great”. Well, now lets see what Pac does now against someone that wont be bullied.

As much as I would also like this fight to happen I wont count on it… If this will really happen it is more exciting than pacman vs mayweather. Unfortunately their weight cannot make it… Pacquiao even said it himself that he had hard time to go 148lbs and martinez said he cannot go beyond 154lbs. Basically they do not have weight limit where they can meet. Unless one of them is willing to risk thier life going beyond or above their limit.

3. If you’re fighting Marquez, you’re required to go back from jr middleweight to lightweight because apparently it would be unfair for JMM to increase weight but its ok for you to chop some.
4. Manny should try to be more choosy on your next opponent cause people love choosy fighter.
5. You need to be more fluent in English cause trash talk is part of Boxing now and Humility just doesn’t sell anymore.
6. You should be below 30 years old, or else you’ll be deemed past your prime.
7. You shouldn’t have any tarnish on your resume that can be criticized.
8. You should have power, hand speed, counter-punching ability, durability and the ability to box like a technician and also then go into the trenches and put up a ferocious fight. If you’re missing one of these, you’re just not good enough.

OK, I see Martinez as a counterpuncher. I have a hard time seeing a counterpuncher as a brawler.
I agree that he likes to fight back (the key word “back”), but that’s only after his opponent presses him and leaves themselves open (and after he has figured his opponent out – maybe by the 2nd half of the fight).
I will also admit that I don’t know Martinez VERY well, I have only seen his recently televised fights against Bunema (I think it was Bunema), Williams 2x, and Cintron (and his previous fight with the cheater), but in each of these fights he was the boxer for much of the fight (as far as I can recall – but in the Cintron fight he turned up the aggression as the fight progressed).

Mayweather is better suited to fight Martinez, for those who know anything. Manny is a bit out of his size range, and both guys will be at disadvantages to make the fight.

Sergio going down to meet Manny in the middle, risking losing his strength due to weight loss.
Would be a fun fight to watch, two sluggers. Manny wins it on (again) speed and accuracy, with superior footwork.
I don’t think this is the fight that will yield the dollars Manny wants. But if Pacquiao is staying in the game for three more years, fighting twice a year, that’s six fights. In a few fights, Martinez may be a huge draw, but right now he’s not even a PPV attraction.

good for martinez, he is maximizing his one lucky punch to the hill now by asking a fight with manny & a substantial amount of retirement fee, no blame that’s boxing. when you are the king of the ring, everybody want to jump and poke a gun on you, in this case in manny’s head. to those aspiring of million dollar payday, lined up since manny will be fighting til his 35 yrs old. how i wish i could be with dave lahr watching one of manny’s future fights side by side to know him & bet, get out some nerves. dave lahr, how do you look like? is it like delahoya, cotto, diaz, hatton & marga after manny busted them up? can we meet?
