By Chris Williams: According to the latest boxing news, trainer Freddie Roach is upset with being teased by Antonio Margarito recently in a video at Fanhouse. Apparently, Roach was teased by Margarito and boxer Brandon Rios, AP reports, which they say makes fun of Roach’s Parkinson condition. Margarito apparently imitated Roach by moving his hands in a shaking way and making a face while doing so. Roach was said to be upset about it. Roach has been pretty open about his thoughts about on Margarito’s hand wrap scandal, as he’s constantly talked about this issue to the media and not let it die.

Is it any wonder then that Margarito is finally firing back at Roach? I mean it’s obviously not something that Margarito should have said, because it reflects badly on him, but Roach should have expected to take some criticism at some point by Margarito, even its inappropriate. I’ve lost track of all the negative comments Roach has made about Margarito during the run-up to Saturday’s fight between Margarito and Pacquiao.

It’s one thing Roach saying he thinks his fighter is better than Margarito, but it’s another thing to have Roach talking about Margarito’s hand wrap scandal frequently and driving it into the ground by saying he suspects Margarito was even using loaded hand wraps during sparring sessions. I don’t know about you, but that’s kind of hitting below the belt. If Roach hated the idea of Pacquiao fighting someone like Margarito, why didn’t Roach stand up on his hind legs and keep the fight from being made? After all these years, you’d think Roach would have some say so about who Pacquiao is fighting, don’t you?

Roach should have pushed Bob Arum and Pacquiao into fighting Sergio Martinez or Paul Williams. At least then Roach wouldn’t have to talk about the Margarito’s hand wrap scandal. Of course, if Roach doesn’t want Pacquiao to fight them because he might lose to both, then I can understand that. Margarito hasn’t looked good in his last two fights and that might be the number one reason why he was picked for Pacquiao instead of Martinez and Williams, who are both fighting really well a this time.

If Margarito really wants to hurt Roach, he needs to turn around and whip Pacquiao on Saturday. If he beats the stuffing out of Pacquiao, Roach will be really hurt, because besides Pacquiao, Roach really doesn’t have any other big stars that are even close to the same ability of Pacquiao. Roach trains Vanes Martirosyan, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Amir Khan, among a number of other fighters. I don’t see Khan, Chavez or Martirosyan as being great fighters nor do I ever see them even coming close to being great. I think Chavez and Khan are fighters that are about to be exposed and beaten badly.

And with Martirosyan, I don’t see him a championship caliber fighter. I know Roach gets a lot of credit for helping Pacquiao’s game, but I think Pacquiao was already a really good fighter even before he was trained with Roach, and I think he’d be the same fighter without Roach just by being with a decent trainer that knew how to teach him to use his other hand. Roach taught Pacquiao to use his right hand, but beyond I don’t see much else improvements that Roach made with Pacquiao. I think a lot of other trainers could have done the same thing with Pacquiao, and he’d be right where he is now.
