Froch & Pacquiao: Give these fighters the credit and respect they deserve

By Alex Sharp: (Photo Tom Casino / Showtime:) Now we are nearly through this busy period of boxing we can sit back and reflect on the last few weeks of boxing. There have been many of predictions about what is going to happen who is going to win, who is going to get knocked out, who is going to get shown up, and to be honest I am sick of hearing people talk utter rubbish about fighters that deserve to be shown more respect than they are.
So basically people contradicting themselves and saying anything just to take any credit at all away from Pacquiao, when the truth is it was a maxed out Pacquiao in terms of what weight he can fight up to against a huge Margarito and once again Manny proved how good he is by taking him apart and taking anything Margarito threw at him.One thing I would say though is even though he is a tough fighter Margarito was custom made for Manny as he is a slow plodder and was stupidly easy to hit. But this was known by anyone who watches boxing before the fight so people who said Margarito would win are either clueless or must just be really jealous of Manny’s success.
I would say though I don,t think Pac man would fair so well against Sergio Martinez who I believe is the most underrated boxer in the world at the minute and definatly deserves to win fighter of the year. He should never have lost the first fight with Paul Williams, I thought the fight was either a draw or Martinez by a round. In the first fight he countered Willaims so well and I believe if he had not let himself get caught in a slug fest in stages would have been a even clearer winner. I also think that when he knocked Williams down in the first round, had there been more than a few seconds left he would have finished him. Then the Pavlik fight.
He just fought a perfect fight against a much bigger and stronger opponent and just totally outclassed him (similar to Manny against Margarito). Proving again that boxing ability,speed and a decent chin will always beat power.Even when Pavlik put him down and looked like getting back into the fight Martinez just battered him in the last 3 rounds and pretty much made sure Pavlik did not want a rematch. And last weekend what can you say, just awesome by Martinez punch perfect against Williams. Emanuel Steward said that Williams took the first round. No way did he, he threw more but the short crisp punches. Martinez threw were much cleaner and effective and the one that knockedWilliams out was a peach and would have knocked anyone out. Sergio Martinez would defiantly give Manny the fight of his life. And I think he would stop him by counter punching him constantly like Marquez did in their fight but with a lot more powerful shots.
Marquez also deserves a lot of credit for his win over Katsidis on Saturday night. People were saying that Katsidis would be too much for him. Why? Because he beat Kevin Mitchell in three rounds, that means nothing because Mitchell had never fought anyone anywhere near as good as Katsidis and was found out. Katsidis’ two defeats have both come when he has stepped it up and Marquez had beaten both the guys before. So it was no surprise to me that Marquez won the fight as all the evidence pointed towards a win for him.
And finally onto the Carl Froch fight with Arthur THE KING Abraham. I must have read 30 articles in the last few months saying that Abraham is going to take Froch to pieces inside a few rounds. Do people really think Carl Froch is stupid he said himself Abraham is a massive puncher and it would be mad to try and trade with him. This guy is a pro boxer and if you think he has got the record he has got (both professional and amateur) without good boxing skills then you are either really stupid or naive or just know nothing about boxing. Froch had many physical advantages over Abraham(speed, height, reach)and he used every one of these including some slick skills to overcome anything Abraham had to offer. He just systematically took him apart and beat him hands down.
These few boxers I have mentioned have provided some of the best fights in the last few years and deserve more respect than being written off and talked about like they don’t know what they are doing.
I just think that people should think a bit more before they make comments about fighters and make these comments based on facts instead of personal reasons, or what country they come from. And watch out for Amir Khan to beat Marcos Maidana on Dec 11.

I can give respect to Froch,but Pacquiao not.Who fight Pacquiao? catch weight fighters,fighters coming from bad lost,fighters who arent ranked as top five great.Pacquiao doesnt want to fight undefeated fighters who are in their prime.The midget isnt great after all.Now he refuses to fight Marquez,but choose to fight old Mosley.The midget and his team are pure farce.
Yes, i agree with this article but somehow we must give more respect to Pacman. Has anyone here earned 8th titles in different divisions? How about if this guys go up to higher divisions, will it be the as Pacman achievements? Has anyone fights as exciting and as the greatest entertainer like Pacman? Has anyone fights as a true warrior as Pacman? Has anyone held a concert after the fight?…I think, none of the above. So please give Pacman as the highest respect in boxing in this era. He’s the greatest boxer i’ve ever seen. Aside from boxing, he’s very humble,generous,kind,humane and very professional. By the way, he’s a Congressman now…can’t you imagine? I salute you Pacman….your’e the greatest of all time!

Pac gets the love from his fellow Flips and the blind. Unless he starts fighting fresh fighters and not the broken leftovers at catch-weight, he’s not going to get the detractors off his back. He is as doubted as Floyd now. He is being branded a cherry-picker. Only the Flips and the blind are his die-hard fans. But, I’m sure that’s enough for Pacquiao. He doesn’t look like someone with integrity and pride.

Froch definately deserves respect……he is in a tournament facing some very tough competition, and he is holding his own. Pac is without a doubt the most exciting, and most popular fighter in the world today, and while he has been able to do and accomplish things that are deserving of our respect, he needs to start fighting some live dogs and maybe a number one contender for a change. This article also should have featured Marquez in the headline because he has always faced top notch competition, and he has never gotten his due.
Though any thoughtful observer understands Froch and Pacquiao deserve credit for outstanding schedules and resumes, the writer is, in my judgment, trying to write an article and an editorial at the same time. First off, if the “article” is about Froch and Pacquiao, why is he writing about Martinez and Marquez? Second, if it is not an editorial, why is he suggesting that there is no way Martinez should have lost the first fight? The article was not about Martinez, and to suggest that Martinez “definatly (sic)” won the first fight is silly. It was close, as demonstrated by the score cards.
Finaly some sense written on here, lets have more quality like this!!!

Hey pill popper. Why are you gettin on Pac for fighting Margarito (who’s always dangerous) when Floyd wouldn’t even fight him OR Cotto for that matter. You say Shane is old, well I guess old enough for Floyd to fight… or how about making Marquez go up to welterweight for the first time in his career and still not being able to KO him. at least Pac had the decency to fight Marquez at his weight. Since 07 Pac has fought 7 times and has had exciting fights. wheres Floyd been… on vacation. c’mon people, stop playing favorites and give props where props are due.

Martinez was getting beat by Williams. He just caught Williams with a shot. If there was no KO Martinez would have lost the fight on technical skills the way it was going.

• Judge Burt Clements made a mistake in scoring the first round, where Pacquiao knocked Marquez down three times. Instead of scoring it 10-6 for Pacquiao, he scored it 10-7. Had he scored the round correctly, Pacquiao would have won by split decision.
