Photo Naoki Fukuda: By Dan Ambrose: I don’t know if anyone was paying attention last night to HBO analyst Emanuel Steward in his commentating for the WBC title fight between World Boxing Council middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and challenger Paul Williams, but I was shocked to hear Steward say that he thought Williams had won the first round of the fight. This after Martinez had really lit Williams up with left hands for almost the entire round. It was even remotely close.

I dont find manny stewart to favor any race when it comes to calling a fight he seems fair but i will tell you who never gives a white fighter a break is harold letterman when ketelnick fought devon alexander he had alexander ahead 10 rds to two a fight alexander admidded he probally lost.and the way max kellerman rags on white fighters esp when joe calzagghi was still fighting even his compliments were back handed compliments when it came to joe
Emanuel Steward has downplayed Sergio Martinez in all of his HBO fights. Go back and watch Martinez/Cintron, Martinez/Pavlik, Martinez/Williams I, and of course Martinez/Williams II. In every case, the other commentators are marveling at Martinez, and Steward is there with “yeah… but…” in favor of his opponent.
I don’t think it has anything to do with race (Cintron is Puerto Rican, Pavlik is Irish). I think it has to do with his role as a trainer and a boxing “insider”. He trained Cintron briefly, and they’re supposedly friendly. It seems to me Steward developed a bias against Martinez because Emanuel has had friendly relationships with Sergio’s opponents.
It just goes to show,that subjectivity is in the norm,if you are pulling for a certain fighter.

i watched that round 4 times! williams landed more clean punches, martinez landed the more powerful ones, which leaves the round open to being scored either way.
imagine the american fighter getting that round scored in his favour while fighting in america!!! ita unheard of!! a travesty!!

hey mister dan ambrose :emanuel stewart makes milions (even if he as enough)on talking hbo boxing. it’s 70 years old, very experienced and he does need to be respected. it’s a human being so he can make mistake . the first round of that fight was williams attacking and connect martinez while maravilla was busy on the defense , i give the first round to williams too. i did not expect a quik fight like these and since williams chin was not yet proved like that so far i expect the fight lasts a little longer and not with williams getting ko. as i said before ；a boxer who lose from quintana wont have nice future in boxing.

I agree with this writer. I was dumbfounded when Steward announced that he would have given the 1st round to Williams. I think he kind of let his bias slip in. Even after the KO He said that Williams was doing everything right up until the KO. And anybody else who watched the fight saw that Williams was getting his ass kicked and was not adjusting to Martinez’ style. I think Emanuel Steward needs to be fired from HBO. And while they’re at it fire Max Kellerman because he never fails to ask stupid questions during his interview. Questions like, “What happened?” and “How did you knock this fighter out?” etc.

I don’t know where Steward was during that round, to me Martinez won because Williams did a little, Martinez did a lot with those punches getting into Williams head. But Martinez proved he won the first fight and Williams proved that Cintron would have beat him badly.
Steward is not unlike Teddy Atlas, they are boxing experts/analyst wanna be who really dont kmow nothing about boxing. Makes me wonder why HBO and ESPN hired them as commentators.
Martinez, just like the first fight, was landing the harder cleaner more effective punches. That’s what counts to me. And what did the most damage. yeah I know the drill, Williams lands more punches. Big deal. Weak fast punches are no match for harder punches. I thought Martinez won the first round, although it was close.
A Martinez/Margarito fight would be excellent. And with the latino fans it would be a big money fight for both fighters.

Yes I heard that to. I thought is Emanuel in need of glasses because he has the wrong fighter winning the 1st. Sergio landed on paul frequently and Frighteningly. He was so quick. he landed a 2 punch combo that stopped williams completely in the corner. I thought his corner is tell him when he gets back don’t stand there keep your hands up and come in behind the jab something williams wasn’t doing. I knew Sergio was gonna land and land big. This is next top fighter in div martinez has destroyed he has cleaned out the jr middles and now middles. he certainly deserves fighter of the Year and maybe #1 fighter because he fights fighters that are #1 and coming off wins.

Lederman and the judges also had the first round for Williams cause he actually won the first round but what difference does it make? He got brutally kayoed in the second so who cares about the points?

I have to agree with Manny; Williams won the first round. He was the aggressor and seemed to be doing everything right. Sergio’s spectacular win in the second round has taken the glow off Pacman’s victory over Margarito.
Williams clearly won the first round. The fight reminded me of jones and tarver second bout where jones was cleanly winnining then bam! Their he goes. Easy as that morons.
Sergio Martinez has been robbed so much…. Im glad he is looking to knock people out now because he always get the short end of the stick… He really should only have one lost on his record and that was against Margarito years ago..
I will not be easy for Williams to come back and fight that style against a fighter close to his size. His durability will be questioned by the guy that counts. Himself. Some minor adjustments like keeping his chin down would do wonders for him. I don’t know what he has planned but Margo might knock him out his first fight back form this ko.

ok. i just watched it again. williams landed more but it was martinez that landed the cleaner harder punches. whose highlight from the 1st round did they replay in between rounds? martinez. that’s who. i had martinez winning the 1st and 2nd up to the KO.
williams always comes in with his hands down. he thinks that he doesn’t need defense because he is always the bigger man. thinking that no one can hurt him.

Respect is earned and Martinez surely earned it in the first fight but was overlooked in my opinion. There’s no doubt this time. “REAL RECOGNIZES REAL”…………. Martinez makes a great Middle Weight Title holder. A Crown that’s been missing a rightful king.

I had Martinez winning the 1st, he was landing those lefts at will. PWill needs to stop all that useless activity, and adopt a better high guard, especially that right hand that he drops way too much.
Of course, Williams won the 1st round and was winning the 2nd until he was hit by chance by that lucky punch. And Williams won the first bout by 9 points, any doubts about it? This is not only an era of great boxing, but great analysts, too.

I had Williams winning the first round because he was able to control the pace.
Martinez was landing clean lefts though, and you could clearly see that Williams had no answer for it.
Regardless of that, Williams still landed at a higher percentage so it’s easy to see how people would give Williams the nod for the close first round.
Martinez won the 1st fight but got robbed now he’s stopped Williams in 2 rounds.
No rematch, Martinez is better.

I thought Martinez won the 1st round also. In the 2nd round, Martinez started to land clean shots to the head and Kellerman says that Williams is starting to land clean shots. WHAT??? I’m glad that Martinez didn’t leave it up to the judges. Who knows how they would’ve scored it.
