Cotto interested in fighting Sergio Martinez: Will Arum let him?

By Chris Williams: According to the latest boxing news, WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) likes the idea of fighting WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KO’s). This would be a great fight if Cotto’s promoter Bob Arum would allow him to take the fight with Martinez. However, the chances of that happening are slim and none, and it’s a fight that Arum wouldn’t have the excuse about Martinez being too big for Chavez because there’s only six pounds that separates the two fighters in their respective weight classes. My guess is Arum won’t let Cotto take the fight because of a couple of reasons.
Arum wants to put Cotto in with his highly hyped and totally unproven fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next year, so I can’t see Arum wanting to match Cotto with Martinez. Arum could still match Cotto with Chavez Jr. after Martinez destroys Cotto, but that might cause fans to be a little less interested in watching the Cotto-Chavez Jr. fight. It really doesn’t matter, though, because Cotto can probably take a 100 beatings and still make short work of Chavez Jr. I see that as an easy fight that Cotto can make at any stage in his career, because Chavez Jr. looks very mediocre and more of a 2nd tier fighter than anyone remotely resembling a #1 contender in the middleweight division. Arum also wants to put Cotto in with Antonio Margarito for a rematch sometime next year after Margarito’s wounds heal from his battle with Manny Pacquiao. It won’t help that fight being made if Martinez totally decimates Cotto and leaves him a physical wreck afterwards for a fight against Margarito.
I do give credit for Cotto for wanting to fight Martinez, but it’s pretty obvious that Arum won’t bless this fight because of how good Martinez is.

By the end of the year people will think very differently about Miguel cotto or just use excuses like always keep in mind he lost to two cheaters cotton would be the the p4p king if he wasn’t cheated out of it!!!
@keep it real. PR = Part of the US = Which means we US Citizens u dummy. Now Cotto is not what he used to be, but he still one of the best fighters out there and I think Cotto-Martinez would be a great fight, and his last fight against Foreman it seemed to me like he brought back the left hook to the body plus his trainer (E-Stewart) took over.

this would be a great win for cotto,but I doubt he can beat martinez.The once highly touted cotto,like AA has shown some decline.The only difference is that Cotto has suffered worse beatings.Cotto lacks a balanced offense,good jab,left hand then nothing.that is why pac is so much better now,he has equaly powerfull hands,well not quite the right as the left.
Cotto vs Martinez will be a good match, it doesn’t mean that if you losse a fight to someone your done, in the history of boxing most the great got loss, some bloggers have tiny brain saying if you losse a fight your done…

Cotto is no longer the fighter he once was, but he can still bang. Williams threw a lot of punches but he was not a banger. Cotto is still a dangerous fight for Martinez but he would have to overcome some very significant shortcomings (pun intended). Cotto has incredible short arms and he was never really a very slick boxer. I think Martinez would just be too much for him.
@kangry. cotto is shot u should have been able to tell from the forman fight. martinez would destroy him at it was not a lucky shot. first round i said to people at my house he is not trying to win rounds he is trying to knock him out. he was on a tko or nothing mission. but if they fight again i think williams wins. its like the floyd mosley bout. mosley finishes floyd off the next bout floyd kills him.

bri, My respects to Martinez for what he have accomplished on the sport but what happened on the 2nd fight was a lucky punch and I don’t think Cotto will back up for what happen to Williams that night, Cotto will fight Martinez at anytime, because is a warrior who fights anybody out there, he’s Puerto Rican and Puerto Ricans fight anybody whether win or lose is all about respect.

This would be a great match up. Cotto never disappoints the fans and the sport. Always looking for the best opponent in his division this is a fight many true fight fans would enjoy.

ARUM is looking at the almost 40 year old SHANE MOSLEY for MANNY PACQUIAO. I don’t understand FREDDIE ROACH said SERGIO MARTINEZ is too big WTF he is 5’10″ shorter than MARGARITO. Martinez can knock him out if he catches him, BUT Cotto is the better boxer and with power all the way thru the fight, cotto will stop sergio in the rounds and finally u will all see what Steward can do with a boxer!!!!
cotto is done. he would not last 5 rounds with williams, martinez,spinks,mosley and a lot of other people. he is shot and over. someone should show him the williams martinez 2 tape. he must not have seen it.

sounds like cotto has been training for southpaws with a vengeance. I say give it to him, he deserves to fight the best, and he never ducks anyone unless his whack evil promoter does the cherrypicking.
Cotto versus Martinez, I’m sold. Martinez is an excellent boxer/puncher. Cotto is a greater boxer. Moreover, Emmanuel Steward is now handling COTTO.
He should fight Paul Williams and ko him first. Then he will have a real payday.

Holy ignorance Batman! Sergio Martinez is taylor made for Cotto. Margarito and Pacquiao beat Cotto because they came at Cotto with such a high volume of offense. Try to box and be cute with Cotto and he will break you apart.
ones again chris go to school : first i am not sure that martinez is stupid enough to confront a very dangerous boxer like miguel cotto : cotto vs martinez will be like cotto quintana or cotto malignaggi. martinez wont catch cotto like he did to williams and cotto power is in every punch not isolated in one punch per fight. martinez will not want to fight cotto , not now!!! i suggest to martinez to fight someone like foreman or gomez just to have a taste . cotto the best . chris williams mama is a prostitute.
But I do think Cotto needs to fight and beat Margarito first. Just beating him would heal alot of cotto’s phsyciological thinking. It is a shame that Cotto’s carrer took a turn for the worse because of some one hitting him with plaster for 12 rounds.

The offer is on the table. Lou DiBella and Bob Arum already talk about the fight on a catch weight of 155 lbs for Sergio’s 160 title. .
Cotto will take the same shot that Corley landed on him if he fights Martinez, with the only difference that Martinez put him down like Williams. Was Cotto different that time? Yes. Has Cotto’s defense improved? No.

paul williams is a decent fighter that throws a ton of punches… (lots of wide ones at that)… paul williams is not that good… so while the knockout was sensational, the reality everyone lands shots on paul williams, martinez just landed the most meaningful one to date. cotto has fought some very fast and tough guys. in fact, i would say that cotto was hanging with pac’s speed in the first 5 rounds of their fight and there is no way in hell that martinez is faster than pac. I give cotto a real shot in this fight and definitely think its a fight that should happen.
Arum likes money so i bet cotto fights martinez. Its the biggest fight out there for cotto.

I am a huge Cotto fan but agree that Martinez would beat him and most likely,bad.I would like to see Cotto vs. Berto.I think that would be the best fight for Cotto right now.

depends on the weight though. at 154 cotto has a chance to beat martinez but at 160, no way.
Just too much of a difficult fight for Cotto, I also doubt Arum would put him in with Martinez, as there’s less money and a lot more risk involved. Arum’s just not going to want to lose out on this fight, especially to a fighter from another stable!
he needs to fight margarito and see how he gets on before even thinking about a fight with somebody the calibre of martinez

I’d be interested to see it. Not sure Cotto would fair that well against a fully fledged middleweight and a southpaw into the bargain.

Cotto would get hurt. He would be stopped inside 6 round. He would have a battered face and the ref. who stop it or his corner would throw the towel.
Martinez is too fast and too strong for Cotto at 154-160.
