Bob Arum: Desperately Seeking Mayweather

By Ryan Dunn: At the post fight conference following Manny Pacquiao’s surgical destruction of Antonio Margarito, Bob Arum wasted no time getting back to business. We boxing fans are all intimately aware of the previous two negotiations to put Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. inside the squared circle together. We know them intimately, even though they both failed.
“I will have Todd Duboef place a call directly to Floyd. Todd will ask one question and one question only, and that is whether Floyd wants to fight Manny.”
It looks like he is avoiding mediation this time, and going directly to the source. This is a good first step. He went on from there.
“If Floyd’s answer is yes about fighting Manny, then Todd will ask for Floyd’s expressed permission to call his criminal lawyer. Todd will ask the lawyer if he can be sure if Floyd will be available, not on trial or otherwise occupied, on specific dates.”
For those not in the know, Mayweather has been charged on eight criminal counts, including four felonies (robbery, grand larceny, and two counts of coercion for threatening his children). Arum wants to be sure that he can put a date in the books, and not have Mayweather end up at a courthouse or (worse) in prison.
Floyd has been seen gallivanting with Don King of late, which created some questions as to where Floyd’s loyalties lie. Arum didn’t seem to care.
“If Todd gets a good answer from the lawyer, then Todd calls Floyd directly one more time. Todd will ask Floyd: ‘Who is your chosen representative? Who should we sit down with to to put this fight together?’”
If we are to take Arum at his word, the chatter should begin shortly. I appreciate the simplicity of his approach this time around, but as with anything to do with Pacquiao or Mayweather, nothing is ever that simple.
So sit back, kick up your feet, and let’s all watch the soap opera unfold for the greatest fight that hasn’t even happened yet.

I would’nt be surprise if Mayweather will soon voluntarily submit himself to prison to avoid Pacquiao.
Arum is making the same mistake as he did with his previous two failed negotiations. What he has to realize is that while in his mind, Pacquiao is the markee fighter, he’s dealing with a fighter in Mayweather who is similar in status, and is not going to let Arum dictate the terms of the fight as though he’s some second rate average fighter. No matter what anybody’s opinion is of Mayweather we are talking about the undefeated PFP king before his retirement who in most boxing experts opinion still is, and also has the better PPV numbers. My suggestion to Arum is not to ask Mayweather directly, but for Arum to first issue a statement to the press that Pacquiao is willing to take random blood testing up to the fight. Let Mayweather do his own consulting with his attorney on whether his pending legal sitiuation would interfer with a fight with Pacquiao. If the attorney gives the ok, I’m sure Arum will be hearing from Mayweather’s representatives. Only one thing has kept this fight from happening and that is the blood testing issue. Arum, go public and let the world know that this would no longer be an issue.

Pacman got hit alot be a slow margerito, by jabs, yeah hes a great offensive fighter but hes got no defence. Bad news if fighting floyd. Bad news.

with the nevada athletic commission making the amendments to there drug testing policy on hemoglobin tests which shows up the use of performance enhancing drugs also the amendment to anabolic steroids testing, surely mayweather now knows that a fight with the pacman would be on the level and the winner wld be the best fighter on the planet, p.s still think floyd is to strong for manny, his reflexes wld be the telling point along with stunning jab, for me floyd wins the day over a brill fighter that the pacman is.
It’s very funny that Arum will always pretend to be in the look out for floyd and pacman fight when the reality says he is not in favour of the fight. Arum worked with floyd before and knows the things that irritates him (which is what he has just done) and he does these things just to get us boxing fans to think floyd does not want to fight pacman which is not true.
One day the fight will happen which is when Arum has another cash cow because he will never allow pacman to loose to floyd now, when it is clear he does not have any other cash cow in his stable at present. Boxing Business sucks.
i say, let mayweather and manny fight 80% to 20%… and that 80% of the purse and HBO PPV would go to the one who will win the fight and 20% to the loser. 50% each if it ends up a draw or should the fight be halted which would forfeit the fight for whatever mayweather-team-caused reason. if they’re both confident they’ll win, then have these stipulated in their agreement.
however, should this fight ever materialize, i’m almost so sure that floyd sr. and roger would come up inside the ring to make a commotion as to prevent manny from beating floyd and thus smudging floyd’s record. floyd sr. and roger would then be thrown out and then jr. would walk out of the fight. well, atleast, that’s how they do it in WWE, where floyd jr. is accustomed to.

To all Floyd Mayweather Jr. fans: Hate Manny Pacquiao all you want but Floyd will never come close to making money like Pacquiao has in the last three years. Guess what? The fight will never happen if Manny doesn’t agree to testing without a cutoff date.Manny agreed to an offer that was no longer on the table,only after refusing it initially.Manny needs to come out and say ” I agree to full testing up until the fight”.Then and only then will I believe Manny has agreed to full testing and not testing with a cutoff date.I get the feeling Manny will never accept testing up until the fight because he needs those days to gain his speed and strength through EPO and HGH.

I also said it’s not everything, but to me, he will have a more difficult time fighting quick and fast opponents rather than these so called big and strong guys…because they have all been slow.

Your argument doesn’t hold water. Manny and Floyd both fought very tough opponents who beat almost all the other boxers in or around them.
But both also are very selective who they fight and when. Or rather, their promoters are selective.
Manny beat Hatton (who beat Malignaggi, Tszyu, etc.). Manny beat Cotto (who beat Mosley). Manny beat Margarito (who beat Cotto). Manny beat ODLH (who beat everyone). Manny would probably beat Mosley, especially the Mosley we saw vs. Mayweather and Mora. Manny beat JMM, Morales, Barrera.
Floyd beat Hatton. He beat ODLH. He beat Mosley (who beat Margarito). He beat Judah. He beat Baldomir. He beat Castillo and Corrales.
These are the top guys in the sport, maybe in this era, possible ever.

Mosley and Pacquiao both bludgeoned Margarito. It’s hard to say who beat him up worse.
The ref could have stopped the fight anywhere after the 9th round, same as in the Cotto fight. Margarito does not know how to quit, and fracturing a guy’s face trumps bloodying his lip in my book.

Arum is peddling $#!t. There’s only one way to entice PBF to fight Manny, and that is Floyd gets the bigger slice of the cake, as much as he can wrestle from Arum. Arum knows this. Floyd knows how ruthless of a parasite Arum is, there’s bad blood between the two. There is no amount of goading that can make Floyd agree to fight Pac in Arum or Team Pac’s terms. The random blood test up to fight night is just a leverage in case Roach asks for PBF to dehydrate.

Can’t wait to see those PPV numbers….they should be great. I know the regular boxing fan may have been peeved at the fact that Margarito got a shot after his cardinal sin and even more peeved because of his and Rios’ antics about Roach’s behaviour. However, this and the many articles in magazines and papers plus 60 minutes, most likely may have peaked the interest of the casual fan. I see 1.5 mill PPV’s.

Not impressed with Manny over Maragrito… The last time we saw Margarito against a good fighter(Shane Mosley) he got his ass whipped even worse than Manny beat him. How can anybody say an over the hill De La Hoya, clottey and a guy who was suspended for a year came back and fought some scrub in Mexico and then hopped in this fight, is impressive. Im just so fascinated by this upcoming fight, (just let me dream a little bit okay), whom will be victorious:
- Top of the line offence vs dito defence
- A great fighter vs a great boxer
- Non of them is washed up
- You cant see any of them loose
- Both have great victorys behind them
- Non of them have any direct weakness (argubly maybe)
- Both of them have unique nature of skill maybe not yet seen tested to their limits

if the fans are deprived of this fight it will be a great loss to boxing. having said this, does pac man need floyed. i believe that he will always be head and shoulders above floyed and has already cemented his legacy for many years to come.all we have to do is look at the accomplishments of each fighter, the quality of there opponents, and there willingness to fight each other. marquez, moralass, barrera, cotto, clotty, margareto, hatton. all beaten most slawted by the pac man. from flyweight to junior middleweight he has not missed a hart beat. has not lost any speed, still has his power, movement. money mayweather on the other hand has fought some top teir fighters also, no were near as many though, and has he beaten them as convincingly. we need not take into consideration his win over marquez who was out of his prime, blown up, and damaged from the many wars he had fought, and also been beaten by pac man twice at his natrul weight in his prime. floyds greatest performance being the mosley win were he was seriously hert and for once actually showed some hart to come back and out box sugar. the point is that both these fighters are good, with pac man being better. the statistics doesn’t lie. floyed is good but will always be second best unless he puts his name on the dotted line and faces pac man, then all he has to do is beat him, which i don’t see happening.

I would love to see Manny fight another slick boxer. These fights have been nothing but sparring sessions for him. You cannot put a fight who walks forward, in straight lines, depends on size & a left hook to beat Pacman. I’m taking nothing away from Manny but Bob Arum throws these average fighters in front of Manny & he does what he is suppose to, he whoops them. Its like when Floyd fought Baldomir; sure he was drastically out weighed & ya he was the champion but the guy didn’t have pure boxing skills just like Margarito. Manny was honestly more tested when he fighting in the lighter divisions vs. other pure boxers: Morales, Marquez. These guys from Arums camp are B- level fighters with a credible name so the sound of the match-up is intriguing but in actuality its not.
In order to bring out the best in Manny & see him for how good he really is, he needs to fight a smaller fighters FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR., Andre Berto, Timothy Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez, Amir Khan, Devin Alexander.

This fantasy fight will never happen. Give it up MF’s.Mayweather wants more money than PAC and Floyd does deserve more money cause he had more PPV sells.
The truth is Floyd has been reluctant to fight Manny because Floyd Sr. is advising him that it’s a bad fight for him style wise. Floyd Sr. knows his son has difficulty fighting south paws and Manny could arguably be the best south paw in the history of boxing. Floyd Sr. cares for his son and does not want what happened to De La Hoya, Cotto, and Margartio to happen to his son. Floyd respects his fathers opinion and might be doubting himself since his father is showing this much concern toward Manny.
Out of these doubt’s it’s causing Mayweather to lash out against people hence the racial video, his current legal troubles and insulting a security guard. Now the last two he is innocent until proven guilty so we can give him the benefit of the doubt. The video is a clear projection of his frustration and the pressure to listen to his father or step up and prove himself against Manny. Floyd’s a grown man and a champion he should make this decision on what he feels and be truthful with the fans about his decision.

Mayweather will say yes to Duboeff because it will look bad for his image and for his fans if he says “NO”. He will just find a way somewhere to duck the fight by outrageous demands. If Pacquiao agrees to the Olympic style of drug testing, Mayweather will demand something else like a bigger purse split or something else that would derail the negotiations because, in reality he does not want to fight Pacquiao. Or he would say to Duboeff that “boxing is not on his mind at the moment”. This way he avoids the fight but not to the point of saying “NO”. This fight will never happen. It’s because Floyd does not want to fight Manny. He’d rather stay undefeated and get’s criticized a little than to risk his undefeated record and have him reduced to nothing. If he stays undefeated, at least there is pride left in him.
