Arum looking at Berto, Mosley and Mayweather for Pacquiao’s next fight

By Dan Ambrose: According to boxing news from Dan Rafael of ESPN, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is trying to decide among three possible opponents for Manny Pacquiao’s next fight in 2011. The fighters that Arum is looking to put Pacquiao in with are Floyd Mayweather Jr., Shane Mosley and Andre Berto.
Berto probably is a little better than Mosley at this point, but Berto isn’t well known among casual fans and doesn’t have much of a fan base to speak of. Mosley has more fans, but he looks to be fading badly as a fighter, having lost to Mayweather in a one-sided 12 round decision in May and then fought to a controversial 12 round draw with Sergio Mora after that.
It may not matter much if Berto doesn’t have many fans, because neither of Pacquiao’s last two opponents Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito. Pacquiao has singlehandedly drawn a lot of fans for both of those fights. It really doesn’t matter who Pacquiao fights, he draws well anyway. In that case, it might be better for Arum to have Berto be the number #2 back-up opponent for Pacquiao in case Mayweather doesn’t want to take the fight.
My guess is Arum will still choose Mosley, because there’s probably a little more money to be made in a Pacquiao-Mosley fight compared to a Pacquiao-Berto fight. The bad thing is the fight won’t likely be as entertaining as Pacquiao vs. Berto, because Mosley probably won’t be able to fight hard enough into the second half of the fight to make it interesting for fans.
Pacquiao’s last two fights have been boring in that Margarito and Clottey were never really competitive. For that reason, a fight between Mosley and Pacquiao would be pretty much what we’ve been seeing in Pacquiao fights.

Berto’s overrated and protected. Yeah he’s got pop on his shots, but he struggled against mediocre opposition like Collazo.
That $hit about Mosley is unwarranted, the guy tried against Mayweather but simply got outclassed.
I think people who use Mora as a yardstick are morons – who the hell looks good against Mora? He’s got an ugly awkward style, even Vernon, RIP, looked bad against him in their first fight. People were saying the same $hit about Forrest after that – gassed out, too old, quitter, blah blah blah.
Guess what happened in the rematch? Forrest figured him out, and beat Mora like a retarded ginger.
If mayweather doesn’t step up he should fight berto or the winner of Bradley-Alexander
why dont mosley and marquez fight each other then get a ticket to fight pac for berto he might run in to a hardcore fight comming up manny ribs are broken
I’m fine with Floyd and Andre, but Mosley doesn’t belong on this list, not even top 5, not after the Mora fight he doesn’t deserve it, sorry but it’s true, he quits in the ring and it may be a product of not carrying his age as elegantly. Who knows, but he’s not anywhere near in league with Berto, Mayweather or Pacquiao.
That’d be like Trent Dilfer going against a prime Favre or P. Manning. Sure Trent is a good quarterback, but he’s not Brett or Peyton.

@Boston Red Head…You have no clue what you’re saying. PAC would kill Mosley @147 inside 3 rounds. He quit on Floyd after 2nd round. Mosley is turning 40 next year.

No real boxing fan wants to see Manny fight Mosley who already is old and no longer a threat. He took too much time off between beating Margarito and at that age he needed to fight much more often. Besides he got schooled by Floyd and looked just as bad against Mora.
Manny has nothing to gain by beating him?. If he crushes him in a few rds the same Flomos who are saying he can’t beat Mosley will immediately say what I just said about Mosley. Rob And-run of Stop Stank Boxing should never make that match.
I am begging for them to match up with Berto, the winner of Bradley & Alexander or Marquez to shut his mouth. I would ask for Fl-avoid but his dear old dad has asked Manny not to bust him up. And of course being his own man unlike Manny who has to do as he is told (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, Jr. must do as Sr. orders.
Manny’s fans are demanding a black fighter for him to please Hip Hopkins. And please clearly note that neither Fl-avoid nor Hip-Hopkins have ever fought a Filipino. I am not sure if either has fought an Asian fighter but I won’t belabour the point to make it racial.

Mayweather if he aint scared and Berto for the welterweight championship. Marquez before considering Mosley. This should be the lottery arrangement aside from Mayweather.
Marquez seems to be looking to retire on trying to get the 3rd match and Sugar Shane is one cool cat that I know Arum loves and respect and I hope he does not give him the fight just to give him a golden parachute with Pacman.

I will agree with anyone who says that Manny gets hit too much a lot more than Fl-avoid gets hit. But I will add few important facts about them. 1. tell me which of the two gives you more than your money’s worth when you watch them fight? 2. Manny is not afraid to get hit. And 3. He seems to enjoy taking chances to entertain us.
He has similar speed as Fl-avoid and uses it to create aggressive, fast and accurate punches and still avoid most return shots. Against Margarito & Cotto he was hitting them with 1 and then 2 shots and could have continued that but he likes to land heavy shots to ko both men and started going after them with 4, 5 & 6 punch combos.
Compare that to Fl-avoid. He hit Marquez and Mosley with potshots from rd 1 to rd 12 never taking a chance to go for the kill. As a result they hardly landed anything meaningful on him. Look, I am not in the ring taking shots and to be honest I think that is the best style as a boxer but they are also into entertainment.
I watched Rigondeaux who has great skills but watching him fight is like watching paint dry. What separates Fl-avoid from them is that we saw him growing from the Olympics when he used to fight much more aggressive and score ko’s. His fights used to be exciting and entertaining but somewhere like Macho Camacho he went from a guy who used to back up his brash outside talk in the ring to a guy who only talks big. It was a marketing ploy and it worked big time in terms of $. But at that time he became a cherry picker and earned so many nick names from frustrated fans like myself. There is no issue about his ability. It is great but had he not began the villian and bragging persona he would not have become a huge PPV star.
But people seem to equate big sales with HOF skills exhibited in the ring. Unless a person can show us his consumate skills against the very best and I mean the very best boxers who will no doubt be in the HOF. And beat them in their prime too, then IMO such a boxer must be in the conversation when talking about the alltime best.
I have seen many fighters with great skills but who refused to consistently test them against others with similar skills. There are also others who fell short as soon as they faced top notch fighters (e.g. Tyson) and who therefore cann be considered an alltime great. They tease and titallate but never deliver against the very best.
Fl-avoid could end up with a ? next to his legacy if he does not step up and face Manny. On the other hand, Manny has already carved his. He has gone up and faced bigger men fearlessly. I just heard his dad Sr. say he fears for his son and would not advise him to go up and fight bigger guys. Recall people how quickly he jumped to bring Marquez up and still not meet the agreed weight? I think that shows lack of honour and dignity; some may call it cowardly like they are saying how he is making excuses not to fight Manny. As a huge fan of both guys but a much bigger fan of boxing, I want to see them. I do not care who wins and I want no excuses.
There can only be one best of the era. In the old days there was one crown, even then guys rose full divisions with no catchweight so let’s put Manny’s achievements in a proper perspective. It is great by today’s standards. Before people think I am belittling Manny, to be fair in the old days guys weighed in the same day and could not regain as much lbs as they do now so the edge was not as huge as Manny faces now.
I hope Manny stays at welter and stop allowing large guys to hammer him while his main foe rest and heals so that when they finally meet nobody has an edge. If he wants to retire shortly, meet Berto, the winner of Alexander/Bradley and Marquez. Win them all and your legacy will be done.

Mayweather already beat the living $hit out of Mosley, so if Phagiao loses to Shane (who is nothing like Clottey or Margarito), the critics are going to say that Phagiao is nowhere close to Mayweather in terms of greatness.
As opposed to a Marquez fight which Phagiao will dominate at 147, the Pactards want to have the opportunity to say ‘Oh Phagiao beat Marquez more impressively than Mayweather did.’
That’s the dirty little secret the Pinoys don’t want you to realize:
There’s little chance that Phagiao can dominate Shane the way Mayweather did. There’s a much better chance that Phagiao will dominate Marquez at 147.
That’s why the Pactards are afraid of a Shane fight. Even if he wins, it won’t be in as dominating a fashion as Mayweather did. And that’s what the Pactards are afraid of – that critics will then claim Mayweather beat Mosley in much more dominant fashion that Phagiao did.
Hence all this bull$hit about a 142 catchweight.
I want to see him fight Berto so that the king of the Jr welters is exposed and retired as a Boxing star. i’ll be suprise if Berto makes it past round 5. I see this one going no more than 2 rounds.

Its just a week after the PAC/Margo fight and the news are going crazy about PAC’s next opponent. It is really a lottery at this stage with today’s catchweight title fight winner between P WIlliams/Martinez is also on the running at long odds pick.
PAC’s next bout is still six months away and I could not remember in the history of boxing so much interest on PAC at this early stage. I’m sure PAC’s articles would continue to swamp this websites almost daily until his next fight.
Moseley is finished so dont go there. Berto would be a better fight, or even someone like Ortiz or Bradley would be ok, but Mayweather is the one we all want just have to hope Mayweathers legal problems cost him a small fortune then he might sign up for the fight and massive payday.
Please don’t choose Mosley that’s less interesting than the Margarito fight, please fight berto or someone that’s undefeated

Mayweather and Berto are the only 2 fighters Pacquiao should be looking to fight next, then the top 140 fighters, period. We definitely need to see Pacquiao fight Mayweather, but Berto would be the next best thing. Get to it Arum!
