Who do you pick? Hearns vs. Mayweather

By Gerardo Granados: Fighting at welterweight, both fighters agree to have their blood examined at the weight in so none would take PEDS before this fight. Both agreed the purse split, size of the globes, judges, and also it’s permitted the use of xylocaine. And just in case you might forget Roberto Duran was a lightweight and fought Hearns.

In this corner wearing a colorful outfit Floyd Money Mayweather, who calls himself the greatest, he is loud and sometimes says things that would be better not to hear; but, no body can say he is not one of the greatest boxers of this era. He is overall skilled gifted, has great speed and footwork, amazing counter puncher and shall I name him the master of defensive style.

On the other corner wearing yellow trunks Tommy “Hitman” Hearns, unarguably one of the best pound for pound fighters in the history of boxing. There is no need to say anything else because you already know him.

  • j jackson says:

of course, packy would get steamrolled by these guys as well….

  • j jackson says:

hearns would ko him. hearns reach and jab would neutralize mayweathers speed. del la hoyo, almost beat him with just a jab…and hearns is light yars ahead of him. duran beats him too. castillo beat him in everybody eyes–punch count as well–except for the judges. duran is much much better than castillo. he gets a decision. and sugar ray leonard. it would like benitiz, someone just as fast as him with no power. late ko.

  • Phoocquiao says:

    Pacquiao would give him problems.

I don’t know what other people thought, but I wasn’t sold on Mosley because of what he did to Margarito. Mosley hasn’t looked good in years, and the Mora fight was further proof of that.

Tommy Hearns who lost to Leonard would beat the Floyd who just beat Mosley. You really think Floyd can tie up a guy like Hearns the same way he tied Mosley up? Hearns wins, Hagler wins, Leonard wins.

I can maybe see Floyd beating Duran. But seeing the type of fight that Castillo was able to give Floyd the first time, that is a big Maybe

  • Props says:

Herns would get beatu on points as would many others and me and u done seen plenty of fights where Floyd done threw a lot more than 2 punches at a time, just nobody out there who can make him do it now..and please don’t use mostly,to me mostly hits jus as hard as herns ever did, this man knocked out 40 people with the blows Floyd took or have u fogotten that to jus something else u wanna take away from that hard working man..in a lot of ways he gets criticized for making his opponent look below average I mean this man makes elite fighters look like they don’t even belong in the same ring, name me someone u feel would give him a real challenge at his weight an don’t say pwill we both know he should be at 154 where he at now an we both no PAC ain’t inna same class so come with somebody that we both could agree on and not someone too big or jus over promoted.

  • Props says:

Ok u say he has yet to take on top welters?,man listen even Larry merchant and emanual steward said there was nobody else elf even PAC that could touch him at that weight don’t take my word for it look listen to them talk at the end of the mostly fight..now all of a sudden mostly was too old man I respect y’all knowledge of the sport but the excuses have got to stop,he has beaten every one that counts and u shouldn’t ask him to move out of his division to satisfy

  • john q says:

    what a stupid question. HEARNS

  • Phoocquiao says:

And for all those that claim that Floyd’s defense is so great, just keep in mind that if Hearns lands on Floyd the way old ass shot Mosley did, then the fights over.

  • Phoocquiao says:

That includes Mayweather, Pacquiao, Williams, and Martinez

  • Phoocquiao says:

Hearns. Hearns beats most if not all the top contenders from 47 to 60

  • The Bible of Boxing says:

Manny is too small for Herans too and would also be destroyed like Duran was. He may run for a few rds and then his warrior instinct would take over and boom!

  • The Bible of Boxing says:

Props, I gave Floyd his due like I said at 130 and 135 but not at 140 and 147. He has failed to face the top guys at those weights. There is no way he could beat Duran or Herans period and definitely not Hearns at 147. Duran was one of the best ever at 135 and would tear Floyd’s head off at 135.
If he was not so interested in just the most $ in fights he would have faced the top 147 lbers by now. He has been a 147 lb fighter for almost 5 years. During that time he has found a way not to face the top guys. Mosley is/was an old man so please, don’t give me his name. I said the man has consummate skills but I want to see them vs the best not people we know he will beat with one hand.

  • The Truth says:

I would say Hearns by TKO or decision. If Hearns was fighting Pacquiao…Hearns by KO

  • crazy says:

Floyd doesn’t have enough heart and desire to except a challege such as Hearns. Whoever saw that fight knows Hearns was out boxing Leonard until the 14rd and the dog in Sugar Ray helped him overcome the boxing lesson Hearns was giving Leonard. Also remember Hearns gave Leonard a detached retina from using his jab. Floyd isn’t a big enough dog to walk thru what Leonard did for a victory over Hearns.

  • Props says:

Oh and by the way the man been fighting bigger guys all his life y’all talking bout PAC moving up look where Floyd started his from. Oscar was a big 154 and showed speed an strength like his youth point being Floyd beat a good Oscar not a fighter who looked out of his element $ame at least give the man that much credit to hear u and others tell it it’s always such an such who would have done such an such to Floyd, u seem to know way to much about boxing to say some of the things u say and I think a lot of what u write comes from your dislike of the fighter outside the ring because if u write according to his accomplishments inside the ring it would read soothing more like this): He beat every one put in front of him he takes his conditiong serious he never under estimates an opponite has great defense and even greater offense if a fighter is good enough to bring that side out of him, good footwork great ability to adapt holds his composure when he gets hit instead of just swinging wild like so many do): then u will probably come to the conclusion that he actually has a all around game not weak in any one category that this kid has it all probley had it since birth now how many fighters can say they have or had the same thing not many if they had they would be undefeated too but they must have lacked one or more if they not,I know the adapt one is important and I can name a few who lost for the reason of lacking that one alone

  • Props says:

To the bible of boxing): Far as the size goes they not that far off and last time I checked boxing was about more than taking blows to the head, the ability to stand and trade can be more of a curse than a gift and has ended some great mens carares way to earily. For once in your life call it like it is the man is great I don’t care bout him so called picking his fights like everybody else does the point is he is the best there ever was at promoting himself for his own fights and backing up what he says he is gonna do, he would have beat herns on points and Duran to on points, he had to much speed and unlike sugar Ray he wouldn’t let the crowd interfere with his game plan so instead of trading pounches like to make the crowd happy he would continue at his own pace picking herns apart with accrete punches

  • Boxing Observer says:

    Hearns would win.

  • The Hitman says:

Floyd Mayweather Jr Vs Miguel Cotto May 2011 Madison Square Garden. Now thats a fight.

  • The Bible of Boxing says:

Let’s correct those who say Floyd was about Leonard’s size because he was not. Secondly, he may have had similar speed to Leonard’s but he did not have Leonard’s desire to be the best and to win. He also did not have guts to stand up and trade when he had no intentions of running.
Floyd has consummate skills but because he has elected not to face the baddest and biggest welters I cannor rate him as an ATG in this class. For that reason i cannot see him beating guys like Hearns. I would give him a good shot against some of the top Jr lightweights and lighweights because he is more geared for those sized guys.
I feel that is why he seems reluctant to face bigger guys. He was more like a warrior when was at the lighter weights but now he feights extra defensively. Methinks it is probably not out of fear itself, but more because like Mosley fighting at 154 he cannot take any chances. Again I say, Hearns destroys him at 147 and up.

  • Anonymous says:

the hitman would not find his opponent.

  • Mike says:

FMJ has great defense but Hearns would go right at him and with his lightening fast hands and power would walk right through him. Listen,Hearns was a warrior,NOT scared to fight anyone in a VERY deep time in those divisions they fought at. When Hearns punched down at an opponant,(as he usually did being tall at 6’2) he was both devastating and a terror. FMJ would NEVER except this fight!

  • Mike says:

    DM

Corralis had NOWHERE near the spped or power that Hearns pssossed! Hearns is bigger and faster than ANYONE FMJ has fought!(Jab may be slightly faster but much smaller and less powerful)

This would have been a mismatch!

  • TomCrib says:

Hearns was fierce but beaten by Leonard who is about Floyd’s size. If Leonard could beat Hearns then Floyd could beat Hearns. Once you neutralised Hearns jab, he was hobbled and Floyd has the defensive skills to do that. It’s not all about two fighters banging away at each other, most of the fight is won by neutralising the opponents ability to fight. This is why southpaws are so successful not because they tend to be anything special, they neutralise an orthodox fighter’s ability to fight. Floyd couldn’t toe to toe with hearns like hagler did but neither could Leonard. Hearns wa slong and rangy and if made to miss, vulnerable.

  • Mike says:

Hearns would take Pretty boy and treat him like a man treats a boy when they fight,BEAT DOWN!!!

Hearns had the speed, power and grit,he would take FMJ OUT OF THEE EARLY!

  • Hearns Ko says:

Hearns would shoot a straight right hand on floyds chin and decapitate him. NO OVERSTATEMENT

  • Dan p says:

I think Floyd is an exceptional fighter but i just don’t see him beating Hearns. He might very well take it the distance and have some strong moments, but i think there is a strong possibilty Hearns would stop him.
Hearns has a welter was frightening, he gave Leonard all he could handle at that weight and i think Mayweather is no Sugar Ray.

  • John says:

This 1 is tough, but i say Mayweather (no disrespect to Hearns) coz ov the way Hearns struggled against Leonard

If this was possible, i say Mayweather should fight Paul Williams as a tune up

  • ian says:

Floyd mayweather may be pound for pound the best now , having come up the weightsfrom super feather to welter and super welter but there is no way, he would have lived with a 6ft 2 Thomas hearns geneticley too big and powerful i think first time the hitman connected it would be game over round 1 or 2 3 at the latest.

  • Taj says:

Honestly I say Floyd if he’s just as slick as a leonard then he’ll give Hearns problems.Hearns would try to use constant pressure but Hearns would gas and then he’ll fall into Floyds game.

  • The Bible of Boxing says:

Maynever is way too small and at any rate would never have the guts to face a murderous, large punching menace like The Real Hitman. It too a pugnacious, iron-willed, hard punching Sugar Ray to wear him down. Floyd may never have the guts to hang in there to emulate Sugar’s feat.
There is also no way that Floyd could pot shot Hearns with patient single shots. Hearns is faster, taller and busier so he would either get outpointed very timidly and easy. Or if he decides to trade like Duran, get bombed out just as fast. I hate to say it but this would be a bad style match up for Floydie!

  • koko says:

are you kiddin? hearns would blow him away

  • tuv says:

    HEARNS!

  • floydroidrage says:

nice try, very creative…but fllody is smart enough to duck and make excuses to avoid the fight to happen.what about freddy roach vs maynever and family
    2011?

  • Sean P says:

Doubt floyd would fight such a physically presenced fighter. But i’d still pick Mayweather…He’s unbelievable.

  • ICheatedOnMyWife,SoIWouldCheatOnMySport says:

    Keyboard cowards unite!

  • malim6 says:

Floyd Jr.is gifted to have lots of boxing skills but has been exposed no self confident to fight potential opponent like Manny Pacquiao. Floyd Jr. has no will power, guts, courage and braveheart of a fighter. To compare Floyd Jr. to any HOF ATG fighters like Tommy Hearns is a travesty to their respective legacies. No way for Floyd Jr. to be considered ATG.

  • milo says:

Floyd vs da great hearns? It would’ve never happen. Floyd don’t have da guts to step n da ring with hearns. Enounegh said!

  • milo says:

Floyd vs da great hearns? It would’ve never happen. Floyd don’t have da guts to step n da ring with hearns. Enough said!

  • cashflow79 says:

You know a fighter is the best of your era when people have to compare him to atg’s of the past and not the present.

  • oasics says:

Only a few intelligent responses. What else is new, seems to be the case everytime someone publishes an article about mayweather.

  • Hoyy!! says:

  • Hoyy!! says:

  • Hoyy!! says:

Mayweather would knock yo mama out

  • vinny says:

Tommy Hearns would knock Mayweather out!!!

  • JosephBTS says:

Just to be honest, Floyd “THE COWARD” Mayweather jr does not deserved comparison with boxers in the caliber of Hearns, Leonard, Duran and Hagler. This are the best boxers below the heavyweight division. They have no fears, they always want to fight the best in their division. Mayweather jr!! Not even qualified to be their waterboy.

  • arrested racist coward woman beater says:

    floyd will be on vacation

  • NICK V says:

MAYWEATHER WOULD BEEN TO SCARED TO FIGHT HIM

  • DeadScared says:

I think Money would have had a good chance of winning against the Hitman same as against the Pacman. Question is balls.

  • apatz says:

floy wouldnt stand a chance against the hit man easy ko win for hearns……

  • mayweather sr. says:

i say it’s a draw, my son lil floyd will run all night and none of them will get hit. lol

  • wardstar says:

    SRL

  • hearns says:

floyd has a lot of skills, his best skill: he knows how to avoid dangerous fighters and i give him A+ for creating various ways of ducking.

  • Pancho Villa says:

    Tommy was too big.

  • Boringfloyd says:

    Hearns of couse

  • Deinonychus says:

Hearns by Knockout in the early rounds. Reach, better power… better all-rounded. I actually think Mayweather wouldnt beat any of the great fighters in their prime. Just my opinion.

  • ali says:

what a stupid question, floyd will definitely do something to avoid him. no need to argue.

  • Johann says:

Floyd vs Hearns is only a dream fight. If Floyd won’t fight Manny what more could you say against Hearns. He will not take this risky fight.

  • DM says:

I say Floyd Jr. He has too much skill for a fighter like Thomas Hearns who is very one dimensional. Floyd would fight him the same way he fought Diego Corrales. Stick and move, jab to the mid-section, break with the left hook, and the lead right hand. His defence will also begin to frustrate Thomas Hearns and when he keeps punching the thin air he may gas himself out.

  • prittyboy fan says:

not only will floyd totally destroy hearns haha. But he will make him look like Amir Khan after Bredes Prescott, totally humiliated !!!

  • Floyd Who??? says:

I thought this article would bring smiles to all FLoyd huggers as they don’t have much to cheer about their hero these days.

But from what I’m reading from the post so far, It’s not looking good for Floydie.

HEARNS by KO before the 8th (Floyd will dance away in the first 7 rounds and Hearns will render the KO on the 8th)

  • josh says:

Hearns all day, rate Floyd would beat a lot a legends, but hearns reach and pressure would catch up with floyd

  • tiger1223usa says:

    hearns wins

  • Wildnature says:

Hearns by KO in round 6…Floyd run all night, but Hearns reach it with your terrific right hand…

  • BENZO says:

I DONT BELIEVE PRETTY BOY WOULD HAVE GOT PAST SWEET PEA OR
    MELDRICK TAYLOR!

  • BENZO says:

    HEARNS BY KO 2ND ROUND!

  • king says:

Be foreal…Thomas hearnns was the manny packman of that era….all punching power and no skill……..Ray took more punishment against him than he had too….so FLOYD WOULD THRASH HIM WORSE…..HANDZ DOWN..NO MATTER WHAT EVERYONE THINKS OR SAYS WE CANT CHANGE REALITY….AND REALITY IS THAT HE WASNT AN ALL AROUND BOXER….ONLY A KID WITH PUNCHING POWER WHO GOT LUCKY AND STARTED GETTING BIG…

  • NEL says:

AND THE BELL RINGS FLOYD WENT UNDER THE ROPES AND HID UNDER THE RING MANY PEOPLE WHERE STUND TO SEE THIS GREAT DEFENSIVE MOVE BUT FLOYD IS GOT SKILLS DONT SLEEP BELL RINGS AND BOTH MEN BACK IN THE CONER EMANUEL TELLS THE HIT MAN YOU GOT TO MOVE HE IS OUT TALKING YOU DUCK AND JUST SWING THE RIGHT HAND BELL RINGS FLOYD DESIDES TO STAY IN THE RING THIS TIME AND PEOPLE CHEER FLOYD GETS KNOCK OUT SECONDS LATER…

  • Aranelz says:

I don’t even have to think about it:
