Briggs suffers fractures under both eyes from Klitschko’s punches

By Jim Dower: Shannon Briggs (51-6-1, 45 KO’s) suffered the worst beating of his career in his 12 round unanimous decision beating from WBA heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (41-2, 38 KO’s) on last Saturday night at the O2 World Arena, in Hamburg, Germany. According to injury reports, Briggs suffered a concussion, a torn left bicep, fractures under both eyes and is currently hospitalized in Germany recovering from the beating. Briggs may have paid two high a price for his big payday against Klitschko. Despite training incredibly hard for the fight, Briggs took heavy punishment and lost the bout by the scores of 120-107, 120-107 and 120-105, despite no knockdowns in the fight. It’s unclear whether Briggs will ever be the same after this brutal beating.

Props to Shanon Briggs for putting up a much better fight than most people expected. He took one hell of a beating in that fight and deserves credit if only for not being KO’ed

ESPN did a story last night on the Larry Holmes vs Muhammad Ali fight. Ali’s speech had already begun to slow and his motor skills were diminished before the Holmes fight. The 10 round beating Ali took from Holmes greatly accelerated the decline in Ali’s health. I have read a lot of criticism on this site for the way the Klitschko brothers fight. They fight safe and make every effort to aviod punishment. Floyd Patterson, Ingemar Johanson and Sugar Ray Robinson died from a combination of dementia and alzheimers. I’m sure there are countless other fighters who also have punch related brain damage. The Klitschko’s should not be criticized because they attempt to avoid head shots.

Vitali was very impressive. Punches were crisp and sharp from the first round on. Don’t think any fighter should have to take that kind of punshment. From the 8th round on the fight could have been stopped at any time. I don’t care if their was an agreement ahead of time between Briggs and his corner not to stop the fight. The corner’s ultimate responsibilit is to protect their fighter. The same thing goes for the ref and the ring doctor. I’m sure the beating Briggs took is going to have long lasting consequences on his health.I am not squeamish, but this fight was painful to watch. Shannon is a very tough, proud man and a good guy. Someone should have been on his side. After alll this was not cage fighting we were watching.

deadscared…good point. briggs shoulder roll makes it hard to hit him on the chin these days..he didnt have it earlier in his career. the couple of times vitali reached his chin briggs immediately went wobbly and nearly was out.

  • PATPUMP says:

I hope Shannon recovers ok. He is a good guy with alot of heart. He’s the kind of guy you would want to have with you when thing got bad.

  • michael says:

I watched 3 or 4 rounds on you tube today. Respect to Shannon for being agressive and having a go though clearly outclassed. From what I saw Vitali was scoring with both hands at will and Shannon unable to get close enough to land anything significant.
That the fight was so onesided shouldn’t detract from Shannons courage or Vitali’s skill.

  • DeadScared says:

Vitali’s punches were aimed at either Briggs face or at the side of the head not at the chin. The reason for the facial fractures and no knock out. If Vitali fought Haye, I think he (Vitali) would aim at Haye’s mouth. So Haye ends up ingesting all his teeth and tongue. Ooouch!
