By Jim Dower: world Boxing Association (WBA) middleweight champion Felix Sturm (33-2-1, 14 KO’s) looked in fine shape on Friday as he made weight for his fight against middleweight contender Giovanni Lorenzo (29-2, 21 KO’s) for their fight on Saturday night at the Lanxess-Arena, Cologne, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.
Sturm weighed 158.9, whereas Lorenzo came in at 158.2. Sturm will be fighting for the first time in 14 months. He’s been out of action because of promoter problems. Sturm last fought against Khoren Gevor in July 2009, beating him by a narrow 12 round decision. Lorenzo, 29, last fought in June, beating Daryl Salmon by a 3rd round stoppage. Most of Lorenzo’s wins have come against 2nd tier opposition.
