Schaefer wants Khan vs. Maidana to take place in Detroit, not England

By William Mackay: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is looking to put the proposed title fight between WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) and once beaten World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s) in Detroit, Michigan, according to boxing news from thesun.co.uk. The reasoning behind this wish on Schaefer’s part is due to the large Muslim population in Detroit to will hopefully shove in droves to watch the 23-year-old Khan fight Maidana. Khan had been hoping to place the fight in the UK where he could fight in front of his adoring British fans. Additionally, the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester and the O2 Arena in London are both already booked up for December 11th, so it’s not possible for Khan to fight Maidana in those venues on that date. Khan wants the fight to be in England.
That sounds like a self defeating moving if Khan really wants to become a star in the U.S. I have an idea. How about Khan fighting Maidana in the U.S. and then fighting guys like Malignaggi in the UK. You think that would work? If Khan wants to be a star here, he’s got to face the best here, not in the UK. That’s a weird move trying to take the Maidana fight to the UK. I wonder if Khan is afraid of losing to Maidana in front of a U.S. audience. In that case, I think Khan is brilliant in wanting to put the Maidana fight in the UK. That way hardly anyone from the U.S. will see or know about the fight unless they come here.
Khan still hasn’t signed the contract that Schaefer sent over to him for the Maidana fight. Schaefer is hoping Khan will sign the contract, but we’ll have to wait and see. This is a big decision for Khan to make. He was flattened the last time he fought a knockout artist by the name of Breidis Prescott in 2008, and Maidana is a bigger puncher than Prescott. I can understand why Khan wouldn’t be eager sign that contract, but there’s only so many weak punchers for him to fight before he finally has to face someone with some pop.
The Khan-Maidana fight could also end up in Las Vegas, Nevada. That’s Schaefer’s second choice for the fight. If that’s the case, the fight will end up at the MGM Grand on December 11th.

2. Pretend that since Khan has signed with Golden Boy and Freddie Roach is his trainer that

3. The Prescott fight never happened. Come up with every possible excuse you can as to why
he was demolished by a punch in the very 1st round.
4. Tell yourself everyday that fighting Paulie Malignaggi proved that Khan is the best (LMAO). Beating 76 year old Marco Antonio Barrera solidifies Khan as an elite great.
5. And last but not least, tell yourself everyday that Khans hand speed is the best youv’e
ever seen while admitting that you, along with Larry Merchant and the rest of the HBO staff were hired to promote this nobody to greatness.

@ BRI look at 140 division the only two big punchers are maidana and ortiz. AK has beaten ortiz twice in the world amature days and is fighting maidana next so plz point out who he is avoiding? Maidana beat ortiz so it would be pointless in him fighting ortiz. AK cant fight maywether, pacquio, cotto cz he still need a couple of years or so to get to that level and i admit that he will not reach their level for quite some time cz they’re living lgends so whats ur point? @THE KO KING **** people are making a big deal about it because khan has not fought anyone with enough power to hurt him since being knocked out. this will be his first fight against a power puncher in almost 3 years. and if he can get past this the next fight will be him layed out on the floor.
Abregu had an outstanding KO record,and he looked totaly confused against Bradley,who is not that defense savy.

I dont understand why people are making out as if maidana has ko’d 10 boxing legends in fact he has ko’d a bunch of nobody’s, look at his last fight against Corley? a finished fighter who has lost 7/11 fights and was ko’d 3/5fights before fighting maidana and even then maidana looked so miserable in beating him which shows that maidana is just a hype and would loose against a good technical fighter. Imagine what this author would of written if Khan fought Corley? Even if Maidana does ko khan which i dont think would be the case, i would not have anymore respect for Maidana because he will eventually be made to look average fighter against good technical fighters. chino maidana got to take these sport in a more professional way if he want to jump to the next level.i forcasted maidana having trouble vs corley and i was right. just becouse maidana really underestimate corley. dont forget these: several of the top welterweight being tru de marcus corley in order to get credibility and they all look better than maidana. now lets forgive him . now maidana need a new real trainer and better people around than he can think about amir khan.

If Khan was fighting a handicap match against Pac and Mayweather at the same time, on the moon (neutral ground), he would still be criticised by this fool.
Obviously Khan will want this fight in the UK just as Maidana will want this in his backyard (that’s natural). Regardless of where it is, it will be a very interesting fight.

So all his super star fights for Belts will be in the USA, he deservs to fight the challanger in his own turf !! just like Alexander did !!

@Fladz: save your breath mate. There’s not been one occasion on this site wherei can recall any of the main offenders issuing anything even remotely like an apology or an admission of being wrong. It’s usually either excuses all the way (Dirrell won, Dawson was stopped early, Ruiz was too old, Valuev was too slow have all been used), or simply ignoring the fact they were wrong & hoping no-one will remember. Also, I’ve known posts to be either edited or removed.

You say Malignaggi is a no-one but I actually think he would beat Maidana. Yes, you heard it here first. Maidana struggles against anyone with skill and Malignaggi has skills enough to win a decision over Maidana.
