Schaefer eyes John Murray vs. Victor Ortiz on December 11th on Khan vs. Maidana undercard

By Joe Mitchell: Unbeaten European lightweight champion John Murray could be handed a golden chance to fight on the undercard of Amir Khan’s world title defence in Las Vegas on December 11th against light welterweight star Victor Ortiz.

Richard Schaefer CEO at Golden Boy revealed at the Khan vs. Maidana press conference in London: “I will be speaking to Murray’s promoter Mick Hennessy to see if Murray is up to the task and if the fight can be done.”

John Murray has been looking for a big fight for a while and his time at lightweight might be up, because he is starting to struggle at that weight. It would be a great fight for Victor Ortiz who has been fighting washed up fighters since losing that great fight with Maidana. This is by no means an easy fight for Ortiz and is a good test. Many believe Amir Khan ducked Murray a few years ago, who is a tough fighter likened to Ricky Hatton with his aggressive style. I think HBO viewers will be in for a treat because this fight would show if Ortiz is back to his best and if Murray is a world class fighter. Let’s hope this happens it could be a FOTY candidate.

  • bazooka says:

These are the people Murray must fight the lightweight division is one of the toughest around.Go Johnny go,Murray to grind Ortiz down.

  • jerome howard says:

good thing for ortiz to stay active. Dont think murrays brain trust would be wise to take this fight though. Criticize victor if you will but the past is the past. #1 in the most improved catagory. Watch out.

  • manny says:

Ortiz is a smart, hard hitting fighter who i think would destroy murray by the 6th round. i hope he gets a rematch with Maidana. i think he’ll knock him out this time.

  • GC COACH says:

    Murray.NEVER HEARD OF HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • fan says:

    @ DaBlakeman

I really don’t think that John Murray has the kind of power that Marcos Maidana has.

  • Andy says:

Hasn’t Murray been inactive for a while? I haven’t heard much about him in a while can any one enlighten me? I have seen him fight in the past an he looks decent I’d like to see him fight ortiz I don’t believe the step up in weight would be a problem but the step up in class might! Even so he hasn’t tested himself at that level and even if he got beat by a close decision in a good fight his stature would be greater than it is right now heck he could win I still think there are question marks over ortiz heart if he gets in a real brawl does he have it in him to really dig deep an come through the other side? Hopefully murray can provide that test if the fight is made. Got to give victor his props at the weekend though he looked good and alot more confident against Harris!

  • Big T says:

Is this Joe Mitchell the very decent journeyman pro from the UK?

  • LOVELL says:

i could bet my left testicle , ortiz would ko murray inside 5 rounds.

  • enough says:

    he’ll destroy john murray

  • Rick Marquez says:

I’m confident that Ortiz has the overall skills to beat anyone at 140. I’ll be the first to say that a fighter that beats Ortiz can go all the way. Ortiz learned a hell of a lot in the Maidana fight and Ortiz would win the rematch. I just want to see the best at 140 fight, sooner than later.

  • wa-il says:

make your move fast GBP, TOP RANK is leaving you behind…..

  • ward says:

He doesnt say ortiz is washed up, he says ortiz has been fighting washed up fighters ie nate campbell and vivian harris.

Murray would get outboxed and knocked out.

  • Sean P says:

I don’t think Ortiz is washed up since his lose to Maidana, hes looked pretty sharp last couple of fights!

  • Stinky Womak says:

This fight won’t happen, as Murray is in line for a title shot at light weight, why ruin the chance of a possible World title and bigger pay days just to fight Ortiz?

  • Harry says:

Murry is a good boxers hope he can win.

  • Resistnsmoke says:

    Ortiz all the way

  • fan says:

    @ cuthbert

Is this John Murray big enough to compete at 140.

  • LOVELL says:

Vicot ortiz deserves a title shot !!

  • cuthbert says:

based on murrays last outing, i see ortiz taking him out on the 8th or 9th
