Pavlik to fight Bryan Vera on November 13th

By Chris Williams: Former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-2, 32 KO’s) has yet another easy mark for his next fight on November 13th against former contestant from The Contender reality television series Bryan Vera (17-2, 11 KO’s). Pavlik will be facing the 28-year-old Vera on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito fight at the Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington, Texas. Vera has lost five out of his last fight bouts, including four out of his last five fights. I’d say that puts him in the easy category for Pavlik. I see this as an ESPN fight, not a PPV bout.

It wouldn’t be such a big deal if this wasn’t an expensive pay per view, which will be going for $55. With the main event fight between Pacquiao and Margarito looking pretty like a terrible mismatch, it was hoped that the co-main event would make up for it.

Well, I can’t say a fight between Pavlik and Vera makes up for the main event fight. Vera moves very little and just slugs. It’s nice that he beat Andy Lee two years ago, but Vera has been beaten four out of his last five fights since then. It’s no longer interesting. If they want to make this a discount due to the mismatches between Pavlik and Vera, and Pacquiao and Margarito, I might consider purchasing this fight but not now.

Vera is just too flawed for my tastes. I want see someone that actually has a chance to beat Pavlik and not just serve as a punching dummy for as long as it lasts. Pavlik lost his last fight against Sergio Martinez in April, and that’s another reason why it’s not terribly interesting to see Pavlik in the co main event for the Pacquiao vs. Margarito fight.

Boxing is a pure sport that gets soiled by all the rats and snakes that involve themselves in the sport. Vampires I call them. Making money and name for themselves off the blood of valiant men. The game needs more regulation or at least qualification. The risk is high in this sport (as in most contact sports)but this one the injuries are in your face, no pun intended. That being said how boxing is allowing Margarito, who I once cheered for and a known cheater to return to the sport is crazy. Didn’t we all watch Louie Resto story? I think Pavlik will win but he’d better not look past Brian Vera or the next time he sees Vera, Vera will be in his victory stance taking ringside pictures. I respect Pavlik but get ‘em B!

Vera can win this one.If Vera utilizes lateral movement which we all know gives Pavlik problems, he can win. Vera has a Knock out or get knocked out mentality. Not to mention Vera has nothing to lose. Vera will do his best to remind Pavlik that his career and status as a top tier fighter hangs in the balance. Vera comes to fight. The pressure is all on Pavlik.
If Vera wins it wouldn’t be a shock to me.

I can’t believe that there are so many narrow minded people out there!…… These are two good men, and this is what they love to do!… So let them have their day, and may the best fighter win!
Instead of being negative, why not just enjoy the fight!
Good luck to both, even though my money is on Vera!

@Chase-Dallas: you said ‘..What a pitiful excuse for an article..’ — i agree w/ you 101%

  • Anonymous says:

a safe fight for pavlik, another fighter with only winning 80% of his fights, that is not disrespectfull by any stretch, just a lesser opposition it seems.

  • gary says:

even though i do NOT think margarito deserves to fight again, i’m so excited & cannot wait for the pacman vs margarito!!!

  • Finn says:

What a depressing fight card. First of all, Margacheato is the main event; no way I’m paying PPV to watch that sleeze. Then Pavlik and Vera, who in their day ware top notch warriors, but who are now on their way out. With all the talent around, you’d think the promoters could do better than this.

Hats off to KieranJ. I thought the same thing. And what does, “Vera has lost five out of his last fight bouts, including four out of his last five fights” exactly mean? It should read “five of his last eight fights.” If you have a public forum, proofread the #$#@# article before posting.

That being said, Vera is not an easy win, but he’s exactly the type of come-forward opponent that Pavlik thrives on. It should be a battle while it lasts, but Pavlik will prevail.

  • Failapino Hostage Takers Suck says:

man, could kelly’s career get any worse?

side note: this is gearing up to be yet another $HIT-ASTIC undercard from Top Rank.

  • State of Texas says:

I just don’t get why Duddy and Pavlik won’t fight. They’ve been avoiding each other for quite some time now.

  • Anonymous says:

Pavlik had a chance to get his title back and passed on it. Years ago Lil Red Lopez lost to Salvador Sanchez , he took the rematch and came up short again, but he had the courage and determination to give it his best shot. Pavlik retire and guit stinking up the place fighting bums, or get out of the beer joint or what ever it is your doing and become a fighter again.

  • KieranJ says:

Chris williams – “Vera has lost five out of his last fight bouts, including four out of his last five fights” but you have put his record at 17 wins with 2 loss’s? Make some sense you idiot.

  • apatz says:

THERE IS SOMETHING MISSING IN PAVLIK,HE USED TO BE A RELENTLES BOXER TOO BAD HE LOST IT CAUSE HE WAS REALLY EXCITING TO WATCH

  • apatz says:

i seen vera fight he is really interesting to watch i would not be surprise if he defats pavlik…..

  • koko says:

ridiculous. If it was andy lee in a rematch it would make sense but this is a terrible fight. If pavlik is gonna fight guys like this he should be fighting once or twice a month
