Ortiz may be better than Alexander, Khan, Bradley and Maidana

By Jason Kim: Victor Ortiz (28-2-1, 22 KO’s) could very well be the best light welterweight in the division after destroying Vivian Harrison (29-5-1, 19 KO’s) in three rounds last Saturday night on the undercard of the Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora bout at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. Ortiz, 23, knocked Harris down four times in the fight before it was stopped by referee Raul Caiz Sr. at 0:45 of the 3rd round.

One of the reasons why Ortiz may be the best fighter in the light welterweight division is because of his combination of one punch power and lightning fast hand speed. He’s probably the hardest puncher in the division, but his hand speed and southpaw stance make him even better. While the other top light welterweights Timothy Bradley, Amir Khan, Devon Alexander and Marcos Maidana have been hogging all the attention in the media and are thought to be the very best in the division, it’s the young Ortiz who actually might be the very best. Ortiz is clearly a bigger puncher than Khan, Alexander and Bradley, there’s no question about that. However, I think Ortiz punches even harder than Maidana.

In his fight with him last year, Ortiz dropped Maidana three times early in the fight, each time with a single punch. Ortiz later on lost the fight by a 6th round stoppage, but he’s improved immensely since then, winning his last four fights in an impressive fashion. Vivian Harris never stood a chance against Ortiz this past weekend. After a slow first round, Ortiz suddenly dropped Harris in the 2nd round after tagging him with two powerful left hooks to the head. Moments later, Ortiz dropped Harris with a short right hand to the head. And then before the round ended, Ortiz put Harris down for the third time in the round, this time with another left hook to the head. In the 3rd round, Ortiz finished Harris off with a short right hook that may have traveled no more than 12 inches and yet was packed with enough power to put Harris down flat on the canvas.

With Ortiz’s big power and speed, I could see him scoring fast knockouts against Alexander, Khan, and Bradley. Maidana would still be a tough bout because of his big power and tough chin, but I think Ortiz will beat him next time around because he’ll box him instead of trying to just slug it out.

Real fans need to see a Ortiz vs Maidana Rematch! the first was a war Maidana was droped and rocked all night against Ortiz but in the end he proved to have much more heart then Ortiz! Ortiz needs to fight Maidana if he wants to clear out most of his critics!

  • joehz says:

I agree with the article Ortiz is the best at 140 pounds despite his loss to maidana, Joe Luis also lost by ko before becoming world champion and he went on to beat shmilling in a rematch. that is just one example there many more similar to this one.

ortiz better than Harris ,but not Alexander,or bradley or khan,or maidana,or a bunch of others but he can prove me wrong by beating these guys,Not harris.

  • Dom says:

    MAIDANA WHOOPED HIM ALREADY

  • bri says:

ortiz is mentally soft. you push him he will give up. must start seeing visions of his father whipping his tail when he was little. alexander and bradley would eat him alive.

  • The All Seeing Eye says:

    I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE!!!

    Bradley > Khan > Ortiz > Maidana > Alexander

  • Rocky says:

Good story, but does Ortiz have all the ingredients. He has shown he has a soft chin and a soft psyche, so what has changed. The abra-ca-dabra is different, but the black magic is still the same, the same demons exist. I also wish Victor all the best, because he is good for the sport I love, boxing, but that is a very bold statement that you have made.

@ darren one name for you harry greb.
if maidana looked all dazzling do you think the fight would have happend they think he aint improving they think wrong

  • daved says:

khan already KO’d ortiz in the amatuers.

  • Darren says:

Marcos Maidana is not all that, did you see him against Corley, average at best! If Khan wins this people need to get off his back, people are just jealous. Tell me a sportsman who earns what Khan does and doesn’t show it off with a flashy sports car?! This is the real reason why people like Scott Gillfold hate Khan. People don’t see the good stuff Khan does such as invest his own money into the community, such as his boxing centre.
I suspect once Khan wins people will still give him a hard time.
Yes Khan is flawed in and out of the ring such as his infamous car accident and of course the Prescott knockout but everyone is entitled to mistakes. He talks big just like every other boxer, the fact that he has earned so much so young is down to his style, you can’t blame him for earning as much as he does. It’s things like this website and all these hate articles which increase his fame and following (whether to see him win or lose).

  • P NELSON says:

ortiz and khan will be the last men standing

  • Danny Washington says:

I agree with the writer partly, Ortiz and Khan are the two best in the division, the others are way over-rated, the next 12 months will tell…

  • kingalex says:

Ortiz better than who??? Come on dude. Maidana still KO’s him in a rematch(and he is the last ranked among those mentioned). Ortiz isn’t even close to either one of them.

    @ Anon
-I don’t think Ortiz has really improved that much from that loss. The rights are still landing, I wish the Campbell fight was a 12 rounder because I liked the final 2 rounds Campbell landed a few rights that got Ortiz’s attention.

  • Anonymous says:

Everyone keeps saying that Ortiz needs to be tested, but Campbell and Harris were those tests. Harris looked shot, but who wouldn’t against those punches?? I definitely see Ortiz beating Alexander and Khan, but great fights with Bradley and Maidana. Even with Maidana, I see him outboxing him and laying him on his back. The only reason why Maidana is getting so much attention is because of his W against Ortiz. Ortiz has shown that he learned from that fight and is ready for any belt holder.

  • Resistnsmoke says:

Ortiz just needs more heart and intelligence and he can be the best, definetly the best puncher out of that group of guys.

  • larame says:

Ortiz does not like to get hit and he gets hit a lot Maidana is the class of that group a real warrior with a heart of stone

  • JOKER says:

@koko ORTIZ GAVE UP WITH MAIDANA FIGHT HE WAS NEVER ACTUALLY KO IT WAS MAIDANA WHO WAS HURT ALOT MORE THAN ORTIZ BUT HAD MORE HEART SO WE KNOW BOTH GUYS HAVE CHIN IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE THE REMATCH

  • Ian says:

Khan and Ortiz have unfinished buisness – they fought each other as amateurs.

  • koko says:

well hes not better than maidana we know that much but hes pretty good

  • Killa says:

Judah will beat Ortiz easy… South Paw against South Paw Ortiz gets embarrassed! Judah will be fighting for a belt by fall 2011, WATCH!

  • pete says:

The problem for the rest of this glittering division is Amir Khan. His greatest weapon is his speed and the way his pops out that jab… Ortiz, Alexander, Bradley and Maidana, they will get him clean. Then the right hand comes out of nowhere and there is serious power in that punch. Khan is quicker, has just as much power as Maidana, has the best jab by far and is the only solid combination puncher. I see him stopping them all. He has to be favourite.

His chin is stronger at this weight, he was 5’10 and fighting at lightweight. It is still a problem but it’s not as much of a problem. He is a far, far better boxer then when he got KO’d by Prescott. He has overwhelmed world champions and former world champions – Kotelnik, Barrera and Malignaggi – ask any of them if they have ever been so lost in a fight. And anyway, the fact he has a suspect chin makes him all the more exciting to watch. Doesn’t it?

    GREAT ARTICLE ALL TRUE…
I See Him destroying everyone in the division!

  • elbeto says:

He broke Hariss Jaw! Ortiz has speed, power, skills, but the thing he is Missing is his Mexican Heart! To fight till the end!!!

  • MBA says:

Can’t be concluded as the best yet…yes it has maybe in it..I see him among the those with the best chances of being called the best light welterweight simply because of his power and speed..His short punches are quite impressive though!

  • apatz says:

@yo……_who has he fought after maidana?nobody anco he gets in there wth a rated boxer…this girl is out…..

  • yo.................. says:

ok he lost to maidana, but after each fight this kid is getting stronger and most important smarter, we will see more from him………..

  • apatz says:

sure he can beat them with their hands tied, ortiz is a girl,he just quits like cintron……

  • Micky says:

Good article. Ortiz can KOT Khan and Alexander.
    KOT Bradley….mmm…Good fight to see.
Rematch with Maidana..even better(one of the best fights I have ever seen).
But do not have a conclusion because Harris was too fragile.
All in all I think these 5 fighters + Kotelnik are the best in 140 pounds.

  • vdog says:

Bradley is better than them all.

  • BLUE DOG says:

HE´S GOOD, BUT MAIDANA PROVE HE´S BETTER THAN HIM

  • Sweet Art says:

There was never any doubt that Ortiz is a very talented young boxer. He has it all, power, speed, skill and he is a down to earth kid. I am looking forward to all those possible match up between those young guys and in few years one of them will come on the top and yes, Ortiz could be the one or maybe Khan??? I am sure Golden Boy will do all they can to make those fight happen. Can’t wait to see Khan vs Maidana, Ortiz vs Maidana 2, Ortiz vs Khan of course…etc

  • ronnie jordan says:

ortiz is definatly a class operater. people are to quick to write of fighters for one loss. he clearly fought the wrong fight aganst maidana. he would out box him if they met again. id fancy his chances against all of those guys. khan would out box him but ortiz would probably catch him at some point and get the ko. he would beat alexander and bradley vs ortiz would be a very even fight. all of this just means the light welters is a great division. i cant wait for benedevis, gavin and gomez to join them next year.

  • Anonymous says:

cant judge on Ortiz vs Harris,as Harris is not alexander in talent and whiskers.

  • ashishwarrior says:

according to kon ortiz is a b class fighter at best so kon or kim is wrong

  • Joker C/east salas ca says:

    No no no…Ortiz is better.

  • Failapino Hostage Takers Suck says:

Harris is a shell of his former self, can’t really conclude much from the fight other than what we pretty much already knew – Ortiz has speed, power, skills, but the question remains, what does he do when the going gets rough? He needs to be tested again.
